@unhurt
That's a big trip.
Clif and Susan's blog (tandem with Luxos light) https://nowherefastcanada.wordpress.com/2014/08/.@SRD will have suggestions too.

Maybe just Labrador? If I can get over the fear!
Posted 6 years ago # -
Yeah, I don't like dugs either.
Posted 6 years ago # -
@unhurt, some weird sh*t on that linkee
Posted 6 years ago # -
@steveo: heh!
@gembo: eh?
Posted 6 years ago # -
@unhurt, if you scroll down from the map of Labrador you posted it gets a little jiggy. Not you, your fellow imugur people.

Technically not against either of the rules but perhaps I've violated the spirit?

1. Find my doppelgänger in a museum by cycling to all the museums until found.
2. Er, that’s it.

The arrival of 48 patches and 2 tubes of vulcanizing glue reminds me of my resolution to repair the many tubes I have waiting. Winter fun!

the many tubes I have waiting
I've seen them, he's not kidding.

Having recorded the number of days I've been on a bike for the last few years, I'm contemplating recording the number of days that I use motorised transport so that I can calculate my Soderberg* number.
*Soderberg number** = number of days travelled by bike / number of days travelling by motorised means.
I'm sure some here will have an impressive Soderberg, I'm going to aim for >6
Anyone think they have double digits?
**yes I have just made the calculations up and that was the best name I could think of.

“number of days travelling by motorised means”
Including bus?
Train?
Posted 6 years ago # -
Depends how strict you want to be...
I would say any motorised transport would go into the denominator. Is that too harsh?
Posted 6 years ago # -
Maybe we should have a 2 numbers...
Large Soderberg = / any days in a car
Small Soderberg = / any days in motorised transport.Or is that getting too complicated.
There could be some very big Large Soderberg Numbers including this person's infinite one.

How do multiple methods in a day count? Say I get the tram to the airport, get on a plane, then get a hire car at the other end - is that 1 or 3? Ditto multiple bike journeys - not there and back but discrete trips in one day? Or does each count as 1 for the whole calendar day?
Posted 6 years ago # -
Maximum score of 1 per calendar day for either the numerator or denominator.
Posted 6 years ago # -
Oh, weighting motorised methods would presumably also depend on the rules used: if CO2 emissions are the key then planes are the biggest Soderberg number of all. Probably. Unless on a cruise ship, which I believe can be worse.

I cross posted. That makes sense, though part of me wants to see the full data!

I was more thinking of trying to promote personal choice to avoid days when you travel by car/motorised methods when cycling is an option.
Cutting back your motorised days will have more of an impact than increasing your cycling days.
I'm also interested in finding out how many days I drive - which is not that much and gets complaints from Mrs Chief as I don't fill the car up with fuel very often (if at all)

How about a barge no. Like Soderberg but only counts trips on the canal?
Posted 6 years ago # -
Your Barge Number is your score on sunny days ;-)

Without wanting to make it more complicated, when applying the weighting for the motorised method, I propose also having a multiplier depending on the reason for the use of motorised transport.
As an example MrsMcR has just driven the less than 1km to a spinning class.

MrsMcR has just driven the less than 1km to a spinning class.
That denominator would be so large all that would be left is a nescafe no.

A family/household Soderberg number (where you multiple together individual Soderberg numbers) would be interesting.
Would give a great incentive to get your nearest & dearest onto a bike more*
*this may be hard if they don't cycle or cycle loads already, but hey no one said it was easy to get a high Soderberg number.

HankChief; why Soderberg?
And I think this needs a new thread.
I must do pretty well if you only include cars as motorised transport; less well if you include trains and busses too. Do trains count?Posted 6 years ago # -
A handcar should count as a human-operated journey, but then you'd be occupying rail infrastructure and reducing its capacity.

My large Soderberg number is infinite (if talking commuting) as I do not drive and cannot abide the bus and I am not sure my train bail (slow train to Glasgow) is running.
Oh wait I had a couple of days the Xmas period where I cycled in but took bus home. 120 ish then
The Smaller Soderberg is more realistic as we do have a car and I have been in it for several longer journeys and multiple shopping expeditions round the bypass etc.
Hankchief is subliminally promoting the change of name of PY Friday to the new name for the cafe formerly known as Peters Yard. Hankchief is going to incur the wrath of He Who Must Be Obeyed., illustrious Leader, now in powder blue lounge suit instead of Mao Jacket as trying to get to Winter Olympics down the road.

And I think this needs a new thread.
A goal of mine for 2018 is to be a little less obsessed by my cycling stats ;)
