Saw the pogues before Celtic fans had cottoned on. Barrowlands, maybe '85. Missed the earlier tour where he was still battering the metal tray off his head as an instrument but met my pal afterwards in the Rock Garden. He was still processing brain damage as art that he had seen. No one saw them as Pogue Mahone? Sorry for the swearing

Saw Echo and the Bunnymen for £4 in 1984.

The interesting thing about the Barrowlands is that I thought it had been a venue for decades but think Simple Minds were first band to play there and I was at one of the earliest gigs after that It just seemed like a perfect venue immediately gaining cult status etc.

I also like The Queen's Hall, hoping to see Lau there in December.

I knew the drummer in Swamptrash and bass player in Critterhill Varmints.

Legendary gigs like Tom Waits, the Pogues and the Bunnymen should have been free. Otherwise how would an ERI cleaner ever afford to go? £22 in 1987 was equivalent to a week's rent - a vast sum.

By charging so much, there were denying cleaners around the UK future cultural heritage. So unfair.

They should have made the gigs free, queue at the door, first come first served. And of course there wouldn't have been any fighting in the queue. Not in 1987, no.

    This is going seriously OT.

    Ah Swamptrash.

Probably a pivotal point in Scottish music.

    http://www.lazypict.thehighlands.co.uk/acidcroft/acidcrofthistory.htm

Frontman told ENews’ showbiz writer (John Gibson) that the band was formed of brothers from southern ‘U S of A’.

    He printed the story.

Is going OT a Boris Johnson-style distraction technique to avoid addressing the real issue?

How much was the VU in '93? I was there as a poor student so it can't have been that expensive, surely?

Neil Young at the Playhouse was the first gig where I thought "how much?!". Think it was £80. It had sold out before I heard it was on anyway but, on reflection, I'd pay that now - I ended up shelling out more than that (ticket, transport, food, drink etc) to see him at the Hop Farm in Kent. Got Supergrass thrown in as support there, so that was nice. Missed the epic Federer/Nadal Wimbledon final as a conseuqnce though.

Barrowlands was reopened for Simple Minds to film the video for Waterfront. Was it just used as a dancehall in its previous incarnation, no gigs?

@gembo, those £4/£5 gigs would be inflation adjusted to £12/£13 in today's money. Try getting into a gig in an established venue by a reasonably well known act for that price!

That said, I managed to get tickets for some EIF stuff for £14 (upper circle, Festival theatre). Not bad. Had to book in April though.

£5 gigs can still be found, but are likely to be relatively unknown bands in pub basements/function rooms.

Could we maybe do Mr Briggs the courtesy of waiting for the outcome of any investigation or disciplinary process?

Ms Davidson said the hearing had "reviewed the evidence submitted from both sides" - including written statements - and concluded that "Mr Briggs is not guilty of sexual harassment".

She said this was based on "several credible eyewitness statements, including some from representatives from other political parties".

Mr Briggs said he was "especially grateful to the SNP parliamentary researchers who were among those who supported my case".

Miles Briggs complainant: I’m sad and angry at process and outcome

Speaking to The Scotsman at an Edinburgh café, the complainant against Tory MSP Miles Briggs, “Emily”, said she was appalled that Mr Briggs could be exonerated without evidence from her and two witnesses to the alleged harassment being heard.

...procedure is a hearing where she would be questioned by the guy she made the complaint about? This is just another reason why #whyididntreport is a thing.

They proposed the complainant be cross-examined by the alleged? That was the Tory party's proposed procedure? I can't even think of anything sarcastic to say.

I really doubt this is appropriate subject matter for a thread titled “Today's latest Miles Briggs idiocy”.

Time for this weeks investigation et al to be spun off on its own?

    Has any woman's complaint ever survived this system? There is a public body whose express purpose covers this area;

    http://www.ethicalstandards.org.uk

I'd be intrigued to learn of their involvement if any.

You could have seen three bands plus me introducing one of them at Henry's Cellar Bar for a fiver the other week. Made a polish chap Mariuz very happy with my dancing too. No miles Briggs investigations nor cycling. Next gig early November at The Brig down Leith.

Similarly there's often an interesting lineup of bands at the Safari Lounge in Abbeyhill. Cheap as chips too.

I don't know what Miles was saying 3 days ago but I would be inclined to think that all staff dealing with Covid-19 response should now be offered free parking at work. Working 12 on 12 off for weeks on end then having to take PT home is a pretty raw deal.

As a balance I would also suggest that anyone who qualifies should also be offered free public transport.

    Yeah, good call acsimpson

I think the only thing to be careful of is when the workers pitch up and find there are no parking spaces.

@neddie, That's one of the reasons I would keep this to Covid-19 medics only. If your patients can receive visitors then you don't need free parking. If all visiting to the hospital is stopped (I hope not) then I assume plenty of parking available.

His colleague Nick Cook said the other day that studies on the business benefits of cycling are invalid because the world has completely changed following Covid. Perhaps that should also apply to the principle of spending £120m on a single roundabout?
