I honestly cannot for the life of me believe the Council are consulting on this, nor that "local residents" complained to them suggesting there were "too many trees"!

If anyone lives in Fairmilehead or nearby and would rather save the trees instead of felling them, please respond to the consultation by 2 March.

    ---

In the Fairmilehead area of the city there is a grassed area known as "Swanston Park" and there are currently 39 healthy trees located on that site.

    Why We Are Consulting

Some local residents have contacted the City of Edinburgh Council to report that during the Autumn period they have been experiencing some issues with fallen leaves from these trees.

The City of Edinburgh Council's Forestry Service have been asked to look at the number of trees on this particular area and they would like to hear the opinions of local residents and stakeholders before deciding what work may be required.

Having streetviewed this location, it wouldn't surprise me if the issues that local residents have isn't anything to do with fallen leaves in autumn, but rather that the trees block their view of the Pentlands, possibly, they imagine, lowering the house values. I can't imagine any 'issue' with fallen leaves here.

Wow, some people are just plain weird and blinkered to the natural, real world around them. Some of my neighbours are similar - they prefer a clear view to the neighbours' houses rather than beautiful trees.

There is nothing in the consultation which says you have to be local to respond.

I presumed it was down to people not wanting to have to take the time to pick the leaves up in the autumn.

I've completed that survey, making the point that the deforestation of Scotland has been proceeding steadily from a peak of tree cover around two thousand years ago. It can only now be brought to its logical conclusion with the best efforts of all concerned.

Primary school children should all have one morning a week uprooting saplings and all councils should have a tree felling target. It means job creation in areas like wood processing, mental health treatment and flood defence construction, hence an increase in GDP.

You cannot beat nature and you shouldn't try.

Dare I suggest, possibly a result of them driving everywhere?

Those pesky leaves are all over the new BMW again: I've only just washed it too!

Re-reading the consultation, there is an option to ask for more trees to be planted if you feel there are not enough. Also I suppose we are all "local residents" if we take Edinburgh (or indeed the Lothians - quite close to the border with Midlothian there) as our locality...

    Just sayin'.

Does anyone know exactly where this is? I know the area reasonably well but can't place 'Swanston Park'.

Because climbing trees is dangerous. And they shed leaves in the autumn, what a nuisance.

@frenchy, those trees look lovely, we could do a Pastor Jack Glass and chain ourselves to them?

Can we have a consultation on whether having all these bogus consultations is a good use of council time?

    Thanks @Frenchy, that makes sense.

I've suggested they plant another 10-15 trees which should eventually provide enough leaf canopy to supress growth of grass, which will save money being spent cutting it.

Pastor Jack chained himself to the trees of Bellahouston Park in Glasgow when JP2 Popemobile was found to be too wide for the tree lined boulevard so the trees had to go.

He was more a Hillhead Heid THe Ba' than a Swanston Swampy tho.

@Luath, great suggestion. A victory for common sense.

Comments: We need more trees wherever they can be sustainably planted. Please consider reducing road access for motor vehicles and creating a tree-lined shared-use boulevard network.

Is planting 2 trees for every one felled council policy or is that just how they plan to salve your collective consciences about needless felling.

If so I nominate the driveways of homeowners who feel that a park isn't a suitable place for nature for the new trees.

You would think living that close to the bypass means trees are a *good* thing, but apparently nope.

There's no reason at all why the Pentlands shouldn't be wooded up to a hundred metres below the higher summits. It could be some kind of....I dunno....Regional Park. And flood defence. In one.

Clearly, they need to remove the trees so they can fit in a few extra few dog logs - which this area is always generously carpeted in.

Filled it in on the basis that felling healthy trees is folly and a needless expense. Also pointed out that residents chose to live by a wood so could reasonably expect fallen leaves and any associated building maintenance issues.

There are hunners of trees in and around Swanston. It's also on a hill, so frequently gets strong winds. I wonder just how much of an effect removing these specific trees would have on the number of fallen leaves there.

Following this consultation, it's been decided that no trees will be chopped down, but the first 10 to die will not be replaced.

I've written to the dude and told him to show his working.

70+% think there are enough or not enough trees. He wants fewer trees. Someone is confused.

Hector has felled a big branch off one of the trees on the green at Swanston today so suspect the whole tree will have to be chopped down. That's one of the ten gone and not to be replaced.
