I am very tired of having cold toes, as discussed elsewhere a wee while ago (can't locate thread but Arellcat was going to make me some overshoes from radiator backing with a glue gun). Anyway, I think maybe I want a pair of those hideous & hideously expensive winter bootee things? Mountain bike compatible, so not the kind you can't walk properly in. Any key advice, before I fall into Chain Reaction (the world's ugliest consumer website)?

(I kind of also want a set of lobster mitts / overmitts...)

ETA I also have wobbly ankles so anything that comes a bit higher up than under the ankle bone might be no bad thing...

Please do not buy lobster mitts - I bought some years ago, at about 90% off (surely a warning sign). Still a waste of money. They somehow manage to combine a complete lack of fine control with an inability to keep the cold out. Worst gloves I ever had.

Lobster mitts are brilliant, you must have a duff pair @Morningsider.

I have done well so far this winter with a very roomy pair of Doc Marten boots + two pairs of socks. The roominess is key - you need to be able to wiggle your toes

Bad time of year to buy bootees. Get some overshoes and then buy the bootees in the summer? I picked up the spesh Defroster for half price - they are SPD so look a bit big on the road bike but you can walk properly in them.

Boa fastening is a funny button thing that the fecker of a van driver appears to have knocks off on last real snow day a couple of weeks back. The fastening looks flimsy with fishing gut for laces but until the van driver nearly took me out, all worked well. I have replacement Boa Brand Button on order.

So, it's a 50/50 split on the lobster mitts then..?

@gembo I have cosy shoe covers but my feet are still cold, much of the time! You will be right about the spring discount but come spring I'll forget till next winter.

Ok unhurt buy the Specialised BG Winter defroster SPD bootees. You will still need warm socks but then your feet will not be cold..

Or other brand if you prefer but they are not all the same. The road shoe versions I find are quite flimsy so watch out for that too.

I had cold feet once, then I got kicked in the ankles and said "I do". I've been very happy ever since. I'm told.

That might just work. Gloves over gloves being a bit of a faff in terms of getting the sizes just right, but mitts on top may be more forgiving...

@roibeard, well yes that should work. Early Sunday I could not find my new liner gloves so had three old liner gloves with various holes in the fingers to get all fingers covered.

However the English teacher talking to Eddie meant gloves bad, mitts good

I do the mitts over gloves things. Works well as once the windchill is gone the warmth is easily retained.

I use some army surplus ones like these

I have a pair of mitts hand-felted by madame IWRATS. Wear 'em over gloves on fearful bad days.

Can maybe take commissions? Though not seen much felt of late.

these look windproof and will probably fit over any existing gloves.

@Iain McR: HMM. I would stand out.

@Iwrats: hand-felted gloves very appealing but then I wouldn't want to use them because they'd be too nice. I think the @HankChief army surplus route might be the one to pursue.

@the canuck I am prepared to look stupid to keep warm...

Specialized defroster not neoprene. They are harder synthetic leather.

Overshoes over a winter bootee would be overkill. Your feet would boil Alive like a lobster

    @unhurt

what do you have on your legs - its usually the blood from your legs is cold, or you have so thicker socks on your feet it stops circulation when in your shoes.
try polypro base layer leggings with 100% wind proof outer leggings and 2 thin layer of merino socks rather than 1 big sock - trap some warm air in there.

there is also heated insoles :D

What kind of socks are you wearing? And, as SallyHinch says, do you have space round your feet for them?

"searched google for lobster overshoes but sadly they only existed in my mind"

isn't that what they call, a gap in the market?

agree that if you keep the wind/wet off, and create space for warm air, more likely to stay warm.

I use Lidl/Aldi ski full mitts which offer adequate control with good warmth. Have just dug out the similarly acquired snow boots which I'm sure would work with mountain bike pedals of the non-SPD variety. But then I have been known to ride in wellies for a commute in really bad conditions.

I converted a pair of Aldi merino wool house socks into a pair of oversocks. Trace shoe outlines onto cardboard, cut out and place in the socks to stretch them out, iron on denim patches for strength, mark the cleat position, cut out cleat holes, remove cardboard. With neoprene overshoes they delay frozen feet.

My toes seem to get on fine with snowboarding socks (very long), a pair of trainers and these contraptions:
