A Met Office spokesman said: "Up to Wednesday it's not too bad, but then overnight there is a very sudden change, with a band of rain, sleet and snow expected. This is moving very fast, so we can expect gale-force winds, ice and the possibility of some snow."

If we all make sure we always carry out Spokes maps with us at all times, if we ever encounter an idle mini-plough it'd be well worth the sacrifice to give the map to the driver and ask them nicely to pop along the purple bits during any spare moments they might have. Time to lean (not sure how to get the equals sign on this) time to clean.

As a fresh blast of snow is expected later this week, ministers have said that every "sinew is being strained" to be ready.

Just spotted a mini JCB clearing (or attempting to clear) a bit of NCN1 - probably starting from Engine Shed to ??. I can report again tonight.
I'm hoping to cycle from St Leonards to Corstorphine tomorrow. Does anyone know if Roseburn park path and Carrick Knowe paths are clear yet? What about Roseburn path?

"Aberdeen is William Hill's 9/4 favourite to see snow at Christmas, with Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newcastle at 3/1. Odds on a blanket of the white stuff covering cities such as London, Leeds and Liverpool were 4/1."

"Does anyone know if Roseburn park path and Carrick Knowe paths are clear yet?"
I've not seen it but I've been told that the Carrick Knowe path (the path from Balgreen to Corstorphine along the north side of the golf course?) is bad. I cycled to Corstorphine this morning and avoided it. Might have a look tonight on the way home.
Cycling in my work shoes though which are not too great on the ice!

Judging by the state of the side streets, I'd say they are probably best avoided. I go that general direction every day and have stuck purely to main roads. I can't even get from Meadowplace Road through past Gylemuir School to South Gyle station.

@Saskia - I would avoid Roseburn path - from experience last year if there is any ice left on any pavement the roseburn will be impassable

Got an overhead view of the innocent yesterday, seems to have one track of black ice with snow on both sides. I assumed it was black ice as it was everywhere else on the roads yesterday!
Posted 13 years ago # -
That is on the upper half. Lower down it is lumpy ice across the path - I had a recce this morning.
Have also been noticing (and there is a letter about this in the EEN today) that the snow seems to have been a good excuse for many dog owners not to bother picking up after their pets. How does that work?
Posted 13 years ago # -
well, its better than putting it in a bag and then hanging it on a fence...
We have it pretty good here, Rome is a nightmare, be careful when walking around and looking up at the architecture. the Romans say 'soldi!' (money) if they get one on the foot. I never saw anyone pick up after their dog.

Yea, I've noticed the dog dirt thing.
I /think/ the snow fairies will magically deal with it so it's probably all right.
Posted 13 years ago # -
Oh well I will be grateful tomorrow then while picking my way through mountains of sh*t that it is under my feet and not in a bag somewhere at the side of the path. And that the Romans have it worse.

How does that work?
Because little doggie digs a hole, goes to the toilet and then covers it up afterwards, and then you can't see where it was. Sorry, that's cats. It's been really bad around some of the footpaths alongside the primary schools, with great big brown, er, evidence, all over the place now that the snow's melted.
Yesterday I had a look at the path from Slateford Road, along Meggategate, round the back of Allan Park Crescent and up to the canal/NCN 75. It's almost impassable on three wheels, let alone two, and the usual inches-thick ice moulded by footprints. Meggateland View and Wynd is ungritted (and unshovelled!) but fairly good traction.

I was ready to try the Innocent again this week. I walked as far as where Big W used to be to check last week and it looked perfectly rideable. Now though, the snow on the paths has turned into rippled sheets of ice. So I'm back to using the train.
As of Sunday our car was still stuck because our neighbours threw all the snow and ice from the pavements onto the road in the hope that it would be lifted by an approaching tractor (it wasn't). Managed to get the car out yesterday and used it for the first time since 27 November.

@Saskia - cycled parallel with the off-road path from Stenhouse to Carrick Knowe on my way home tonight. It looks like how Min and Ruggtomcat are describing the Innocent - a black strip bordered by impenetrable white ridges of hard packed ice. Also plenty sections where there's no black strip. It was dark and I was on the road so couldn't say for sure, but there's probably pockets of black ice and "rumble strip" ice on the apparently clear section. I'd give it a miss and take the road.

Somewhat torn myself, I've been using the MTB as big gnarly tyres are a blessing when I hit the random uncleared patches of snow/ice in the cycle lanes/at roadside (cunningly now mostly black/brown to make them harder to spot). However it's a shame to waste good mud tyres on tarmac, I miss my proper mudguards and panniers, and it's b***dy hard work if I'm honest!
The sensible voice in my head however points out that the day I revert to a "normal" bike will be the day I hit a slippery patch and also the day it snows furiously while I am at work :-/
Tricky... dashed tricky.... :-sPosted 13 years ago # -
Huh yes, this patchy stuff is the worst really as you don't know what to do!

Nice to see Dalry Rd has vast sections of ploughed and pavement removed ice dumped in it forcing me into the traffic... lovely, just lovely, clear the rest of the road... but not the cycle lane.
I feel a letter to my councillor coming on....Posted 13 years ago # -
I saw the mini tractors clearing the bit through the houses to get to the Innocent (don't know name)this morning. I guess this means they haven't made it as far as the path yet. Must be very slow work!
