Starting a thread. Could have lessons for elsewhere in the city and is hopefully the start of more filtered permeability in Corstorphine.

Proposal is to make Featherhall Avenue one way southbound and install a segregated cycleway around the 'corner' to enable contniued 2-way cycling. residents have kicked off about parking...

It has stirred up quite some reaction on the Local FB group, regarding the loss of parking...

Will be worth giving the Cllrs some supportive vibes...

What's the background to this? Usually these sorts of things require consultation, more consultation, TRO, objections etc. How is it getting done here?

I wonder how big a project could get done as an experiment?

Stickman. Quite a lot of history in trying to get changes to the road.

Stickman - I imagine this is through an experimental Traffic Regulation Order. There is effectively no limit on the size of an experimental Traffic Regulation Order. The George Street cycle lanes/pedestrianisation were authorised through one. They are a good way to go, as there are almost no consultation requirements - the only downside is they are time limited (off the top of my head, I think 18 months maximum).

    "Featherhall and Manse Roads:

Both roads’ residents surved five years ago, resulting in decision to make one-way streets. Nothing happened – why not?

    Suggested Solutions:

One resident notes that conflicting needs of residents and cycling lobby led to decision to not make one-way."

"Passionate discussion about traffic and #airpollution.
Diverse views expressed but agreed that every person who choses active travel, helps free up road space for someone that has to drive e.g. disabled"

Went to look at this today. A driver ignored the one-way restriction within about two seconds of me getting there.

Unusual sign underneath the No Entry - isn't that just the upside down version of the sign that should be on the other end? "Except cycles" is more usual I'd have thought.

But it's not "except cycles", the no entry signs span the "road" bit, which cyclists can't use, having been provided with the segregated contraflow bit, being covered by the blue sign.

That situation seems to be handled in lots of different ways across the country. I wonder if that sign is a "legit" one. I feel like it could easily be mistaken for its more common inverse, although the no entry sign should help to make the meaning clear...

The kids & I were stopped by a well meaning woman this morning as we turned right off SJR onto Featherhall.

She told us it was no right turn and a nasty turn for taking kids on.

I pointed to below the no right turn sign where it said "except cycles" and advised it was a lot safer than Meadow Place Road.

    We departed with a smile.

HankChief - it's funny how so many people like to try to tell cyclists off even when they are wrong yet no-one says boo when a car does it illegally.

I actually had a car driver continuing to come out of Featherhall to go right across my path as I was taking that right into it. He was shouting at me no right turn, I'm afraid my reply broke most of the rules on this forum!

I'll miss the trial when it's gone. My wee one has become a dab hand and putting the temporary bollards back in...

@HankChief - so this is a trial only? It won't be made permanent?

6 week trial until the end of this month.

Then it will be removed and they will consider the impact before making a permanent decision.

Concerns about removing parking could scupper it...

Consultation only allows you to give one mode of transport that you use around the area. Great.

    Interesting questions in the consultation...

"6. Did you find the trial system on Featherhall Avenue improve the safety for motorists and cyclists?
    Yes
    No
    No difference
    7. Was the designated cycle lane beneficial to you?
    Yes
    No
    No difference
    "

Feel free to add your tuppence worth...

So, I've had a go at explaining why Featherhall is such an important route.

    https://hankchiefblog.wordpress.com/2018/10/19/featherhall-trial-why-the-cycle-route-is-needed/

I've not publicised widely yet as I will await the hive mind's verdict on the ream of consciousness that I have put into it.

@HankChief: good blog. Despite living nearby I hadn’t realised until you laid it out quite why Featherhall is such an important link.
