Looks like there was some grit before the last snowfall.

Apparently there's a whole 10 railway snow plows in Scotland. Unless they count them like the council count mini-tractors, in which case there are 8

Kaputnik - railway snow ploughs!?! What madness is this!

John Swinney was asked about the poor performance of the rail network due to snow and ice at the Transport, Infrastructure and Climate Change Committee meeting on 14 December 2010. He stated that:

"The concept of ploughing the tracks was suggested, but that was impossible because of the sophistication of the rail monitoring equipment that sits within the tracks and the fact that it would have been dangerous for the long-term health of the rail network"

Someone should tell Network Rail to stop this snow ploughing nonsense immediately, before they really make a mess of things!

So glad we have someone in charge who really knows what they are talking about.

Don't worry, they have a better idea. From the BBC article chdot
    just posted.

"Keith Brown said a six-point plan, that included putting grit at key points on the road network and using kilts to stop trains from freezing, was working."

    What a lovely image. :-)

I think us cyclists should let them in on the secret of putting merino tights under your kilt to stop yourself from freezing!

A friend who lives in the West Midlands just texted me to say they had footage on their local news the other day of bikes feeling their way down Argyle Place on some sort of "and finally, lets laugh at the Scots trying to cope with snow" sort of feature. Wonder if it's related to the satellite truck I photographed at the bottom of Marchmont Road over the weekend

Not looking forward to the drive to Ayr on the roads in the dark with a frozen screen wash bottle... Might try melting it with some boiling water...

Colleague cycled in on the Leith to Roseburn path today, said the cooncil has scraped it. Says it has uncovered some nice bits of ice though... May stick to the roads for my final, final ride of the year tomorrow.

Hmm. We're supposed to be driving down through that orange bit tomorrow. We shall indeed be prepared, carrying sufficient wean-food for at least three days in case we get stuck.

Drunken cycling on the canal. Ok, if it goes wrong, it wasn't my idea. In fact recombodna started it.

    Apologies if the following is obvious/teaching granny to suck eggs;
Assuming the bottle is under the bonnet heat from the engine should defrost that, the lines and the nozzles however are more difficult(!) I'm using pretty much neat concentrate (DON'T buy it at halfrauds, go to a motor factor and buy a gallon at a time). Empty and fill with neat/nearly neat concentrate.
If it gets cold enough however that still doesn't work, so keep a spray bottle of de-icer (or can if you don't mind cfc's/cold hands) where you can reach it from the drivers seat, where necessary, pull in somewhere safe, wind down drivers window and reach out and spray the screen with de-icer, et voila, you can use the wipers to clear your screen :)
    Good luck!

    Drunken cycling on the canal.

No, no, no. Getting drunk is to be reserved for the second pub phase (optional).

No. Do try it at home! Don't try it on a canal / pond / loch / reservoir / the sea / river :)

I was so going to ride this morning, and was weirdly excited about it.

So managed to assemble most of my cycle kit from the various places I'd thrown it in a huff last week when I stopped riding, all ready to go then I couldn't find the keys to my lock.

So, changed and on the bus, and then I leave my rather nice gloves on the 14.

Not. Feeling. Festive. Wanting to just be put back in my box. (oh, sorry, wrong thread :))
