@IWRATS: Isn't it amazing that an eagle's GPS transponder could have fallen off all by itself and landed on a small piece of lead sheet that was just the right size, with sufficient force to cause the lead to wrap around itself and bounce into a nearby river?

    @Arellcat

Eagles have powerful beaks and claws. Quite capable of slicing up a sheet of roofing lead, cutting the transponder from their backs and then wrapping it in the lead sheet before dropping it in a river.

They might be flying rats, but all the same, I was working away this morning when there was a massive thump against a window downstairs. I found a pigeon out for the count a couple of feet away. I put it in a box and brought it inside, in case it would come to in an hour or two, but not a peep. I think the impact actually broke its neck.

It will be returned to the garden tonight, that the foxes and cats may dine merrily.

    Any wreckage?

None whatsoever. A fox came along once it was dark, took the whole pigeon in its mouth and ran off!

@Arellcat Not a good day for pigeons. Last night I saw two 'resting' (no visible damage) pigeons by of the side of Newbridge-Kirtnewton road. They were only a few metres apart.

I once followed a clearly blind wood pigeon as it flew low along William Street straight into the grille of an oncoming car.

Quite a sound and a mercifully quick end for the bird in question.

@bill - what road goes from Newbridge to Kirknewton? You are going to confuse IWRATS. Last week I showed him the East Calder observatory and the drop kerbs of East Calder (note he pointed out they did not drop enough) then up through the wee hosses to Camps and Kirknewton. Is that the route you mean?

@gembo Not that route. Resting pigeons were on Cliftonhall Rd.
looks like you took IWARTS along my commuting roads. Did you introduce the observatory be its proper name 'Observatorio Astronomico de East Calder'?

Are the drop kerbs of East Calder the drop kerbs by Jonkey and Drunkey (they are not always out, so easy to miss)?
Sounds like you missed the new road surface on East Calder's Main St. It's delightful.

We did go down to Cliftonhall Road first though so was indeed the route @bill

I am sorry I did not use the full title. The IWRATS wanted to know why the people had an observatory in their garden. I said it was to look at the stars during the evening part of the day. Tonight is meteor shower tea time if we look north, no need for observatory.

We then went forwards to where the new half of East Calder is being built and the vigilant cyclist can squeeze through where cars cannot be driven. The IWRATs liked this aspect immensely though there was one big builders lorry hurtling down which we had to watched. We did see small equine Quadra peds but not Jonkey or Drunkey

I am sad to think that I passed close to Jonkey and Drunkey without either they or I (them or me?) being aware of the fact.

Having the correct name of the Observatorio Astronomico de East Calder pointed out is great Corrections, Clarifications & Errata content.

I enjoyed that ride hugely, mainly because the climb back up was undetectable so the swoosh back down from the Moss was a freebie.

Plenty of pigeon feathers in the garden. Nae body though, so evidently the predator (a cat I should think) got away with the booty.

Ran on Craigmillar Hill this morning and disturbed a murder of crows sitting down to dine on a wood pigeon. They hadn't killed it and I scanned the trees for the killer but it was discrete.

Rereading Ragtime by E L Doctorow. That is a mighty fine book. One of the less salacious strands is about Peary the polar explorer. There is a passage about how the esquimaux kill gannets (wring their necks) and more poignantly the smaller auks where they hold them in one hand and just press their hearts which kills them

Terrible things are happening to Pangolins. Not cycling related. Quest has no giro, tonight.

So watching Rolling Stones at the BBC on yesterday. Charlie is my darling

A car and two lurcher dogs were also seized and will be held until further inquiries have been carried out.

In England the law is that dogs are returned to the owners after they've gone to court, even if they're convicted, which seems daft to me. I'm not sure if this is the case in Scotland, though.

PS: Lurchers and greyhounds are fantastic pets. Please do consider adopting one if you're ever thinking about getting a dog.

Did one of yours not punch you in the face and then run away from a fly? They sound very much like cats.

Especially if you like a dog that considers napping a sport.
