    @fimm there was a dead fox yesterday by the road in Mid Calder. It actually looked as if it was seeping. No visibly injured. Is it the same one or yours was in Livingston proper?

    (i was meant to post it yesterday but I couldn't find the thread)

    bill sounds like the same one - I saw it on the way in to work and you'd be more likely to see it on your way home? Just on the corner at the bottom of the hill with the double white lines - not far from where we passed one another the other week IIRC.

    @jdanielp black BMW?

    A year or so ago, my wife arrived home with the car on the back of a truck following a run in with a fox in Fife. She has been known to overtake at inappropriate speeds.

    @fimm Yes, that would be the same one then. Glad it's not another one.

    "not far from where we passed one another the other week IIRC."

    That time you saw CycleCommute.CC, not me, as far as I can remember. Despite the daily commute I don't think I have ever seen you on my way (live in Edinburgh, work in Livingston).

    I beg your pardons, bill and CycleCommute.CC. I had indeed got you mixed up.

    @CycleCommute.CC Maybe... perhaps once you shave off your beard or I start working on mine?

    @fimm no worries!

    @Rob no, this was back in around 2005 and I can't remember the type of car, but I do vividly remember seeing the poor fox being thrown into the air :(

    Very large badger curled up beside Myreside Road this morning, presumably casualty of a vehicle.

    Whoever (presumably) hit it was (presumably) doing more than the 20mph speed limit in force in that straight bit of road with clear sightlines and nowhere for a badger to hide.

    @Greenroofer sad news. Glad I wasn't going that way today.

    The Kingsknowe Rat is dead (again) on the towpath, just west of the bypass.

    A very recently dead fox in darkest south Lanarkshire yesterday - almost as if we were the first vehicles to pass it since its demise. Tail still bushy, snarl still visible.

    Dead whale on beach near Craster. My guess is that it's a young humpback as its got nobbles on its head (visible though upside down) and long flippers. But nowhere near as long as an adult would be. A bit inflated, so keep clear

    Stung by either a bee or a wasp whilst cycling home tonight. Right on the lip, rather painful and distinctly swollen.

    Time of year @frenchy

    Seems so. Driver stopped at the traffic lights beside me said he'd been stung a few days ago as well.

    @Frenchy, I hope you've managed to stay out of lip rehab:
    And I had to spend the next six weeks in lip rehab with this kid named Oscar who got stung by a bee, right on the lip

    Came across an utterly cute little vole making its way across a road near Innerleithen yesterday. Unfortunately it had an injury to its hindquarters, so was wriggling across rather than scurrying.

    It didn't resist as I scooped it up and put it on the nearest verge. I realised as I rode off that I should have put it on the verge that it was aiming for, in case it was trying to make its way home.

    Whether it was near home or not, I suspect that it wasn't long for this world. This is sad, as it was very cute.

    Found a big frog (or maybe a toad - I understand they are toadally different...) on the footway near our house. I think it was looking for a pond to spawn in. My husband scooped it up and deposited it in the woodland opposite where it had a better chance of finding somewhere moist to lurk, even if no ponds.

    Maybe this was a wildlife highlight but I was sad that it wasn't near an appropriate habitat and just on tarmac pavement.

    Probably just looking for food - they spawn in the spring! Moist woodland sounds pretty ideal.

    First animal strike today in car or bike - a grey squirrel ran from the road side under my back wheel. Looks like it died instantly.

    I suppose I can say I've done my bit for red squirrel conservation...
