I'm doing my first calendar Audax event since March on Saturday (I did diys with, Cyclingmollie in April and May), I'm taking it relatively easy this year. This one is a 200 in Argyll http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/19-488/ Looks fun with a ferry crossing and somewhat hiller than the borders runs that I'm used to. I'm hoping a week of riding in Snowdonia will help.
    Anyone else doing it?

@Hankchief - GWS- wondered why I hadn't seen you much at work

    @amir

Was really tempted by this one (had done part of the route on the five ferries and really enjoyed it), but didn't fit in with family arrangements so by way of compensation I'll be doing Riding the Ghost on 18th August instead. That looks a lovely ride too.

Hankchief - quick recovery! Not much fun, bike withdrawal symptoms

Paddyirish - I've signed up for the August run too. Have to negotiate at home still!

I’m signed up for Argyll. Should be good. Good pub at Otter Ferry with only a minor detour off-route after the 3rd big climb.

I forgot to sign up for this, oh well, 2 weeks in a row cycling might be bad for my family life.

I'll be there on Saturday with Mrs Panyagua. I'm looking forward to it, having failed to ride a single calendar event this year (the March Borders ride having been called off due to snow). Hoping to do the August event too.

Looks great. I hope it goes well. I'll be helping my youngest celebrate her eighteenth birthday.

Er...apologies if everyone already knows about this, but the Trans Alba race starts tomorrow in Leith. Looks challenging! 1,065 miles, 57,500 feet of climbing. Looks to have taken some of the route from the Mille Alba and added a bit across the Cairngorms.

One of the entrants is One Year Time Trial legend Steve Abraham.

I think I might go down tomorrow and give them a send off!

Correction, I think the start is at Cramond. Registration was in Leith, today...

Also correction, they appear to have taken the route of the West Coast, Highlands and Inner Hebrides 1300 audax (not the Mille Alba) and added bits of the Snow Roads. Don't quite understand why it costs more than ten times as much as an "equivalent" audax to enter, but hey...

So according to the Trans Alba tracker, the riders are currently in Fife. Will be interesting to see how they get on in the Cairngorms later today.

Another long "race" starts in a week: the Pan Celtic. Starts in Inverness and goes to Ireland and Wales.

I think these events are really just very long sportive rather than races, TBH. Chapeau to anyone who manages to complete them.

The Argyll Alps 200 was fun. Lovely route, lots of climbing, but some flat bits in the first half (and rushing to miss the ferry). Weather steamy at first but freshened up, with light rain showers (with big drops) and rumbling thunder that produced spectacular lightning once safely back in the hotel.
Riding out west is always inspirational.

Some Trans Alba Race tracking updates: the first rider reached the centre of Inverness at 2am. Steve Abraham has now taken the lead on day two, currently heading towards Tongue. I suppose after the Year record attempt, this is relatively simple for him... :-)

@crowriver thanks for the updates. I keep checking the website every now and then after you posted it here. Looks like the riders are spread along a 200km stretch. Some are doing it a lot more leisurely than the others ;-)

@bill, aye there are folk doing 200+ miles per day, while others have only managed 80 or so. It was a bit windy yesterday so that may have been a factor for some. It did seem a couple of riders maybe had mechanical problems early on during the Fife segment. Others just seem to be there for the fun of it, which is fine.

The pace of the leading riders is impressive though. Edinburgh to Inverness via the Cairngorms in 17 hours is going some!

Phenomenal ride by Steve Abraham. 440 miles on the clock in 37 hours. Has just reached Ullapool. Way ahead of second placed rider Nicky Shaw who has also had an incredible event so far.

Incredibly, Steve Abraham is now past the half way point after only 47 hours. Nicky Shaw not far behind. If they keep this up, they'll both be back in Edinburgh within a couple of days. However they do have three ferries to catch before then, so that may slow them down.

The back markers seem to be extending their sojourn in the Cairngorms. If they finish, it will be very full value ride for them.

Steve Abraham has crossed the Skye bridge and passed the 600 mile point. Less than 20 miles to the ferry port. So he could make it for the last ferry. If he does, his lead will be unassailable; if not, he'll lose his lead as the others will catch him at the port.

    Dramatic!

Considering the ferry isn't scheduled to arrive in Armadale for another 2 minutes, I reckon he'll be okay. :)

I think the tracker only updates every now and again, especially if big hills nearby. He's safely across and can make his way leisurely down to the next port, even get some sleep.

It's "only" 90km from Mallaig to Kilchoan, but apparently there's over 3000m of climbing. Even going slowly, "leisurely" isn't a word I'd think anyone could use to describe that. But Steve Abraham might, I suppose.

Seems he is nearly half way there already. Maybe he'll have a kip in the ferry waiting room after he arrives...

This is a rider who came second in the Transatlantic Way Race just a fortnight ago (2300km).

And he's done all this on a 2015 Raleigh Sojourn too.

    Chapeau!

Steve Abraham waiting for/on the ferry off Mull to Oban. So looks that's his last ferry and now (mostly) a tailwindy ride back.

Nicky Shaw in Mallaig while the rest still haven't reached Skye.

Steve Abraham on his way to Glasgow now with only 300-odd miles left to go until the finish. Second placed Nicky Shaw could just make it to Oban on the last ferry tonight. The pursuivants are on Skye but unlikely any of them will make it to Mull until tomorrow.

Steve Abraham bearing down on Helensburgh and the Clyde. He has an 80 mile lead over Nicky Shaw who alighted at Oban recently. The battle for third place will have to wait until the next batch of riders catch a ferry to Mull in the morning.
