"This is a rider who came second in the Transatlantic Way Race just a fortnight ago (2300km). "

And I believe PBP will be his recovery ride...

Phenomenal from all the top riders. I did the coastal stretch between Shieldaig and Applecross not that long ago and the thought of doing it with 500 miles in my legs- ugh!

Can somebody warn me when there's good stuff on this thread?

Loving reading back through this mad race that seems to me to capture the real spirit of pre-war Tours de France minus the violence and cheating.

Morning update: Steve Abraham seems to be having a kip on the eastern side of Loch Lomond, having ridden 860 miles so far; Nicky Shaw is on the move from Oban, having had what appears to be a very good sleep. She has 130 miles to ride before she can hope to catch Steve - but he'd better not slumber too long. A number of pursuivants are on the first ferry to Mull, others have yet to reach the port.

If the winner gets to Holyrood at a sociable hour it would be nice to have a CCE welcoming rabble.

Could we cargo-bike an armchair for the them? Must be craving a comfy seat.

Steve Abraham is really smashing it and has got 250 miles to go. Surely at Holyrood before midnight(?)

More like only 150 miles to go!

At this rate he'll be back in Edinburgh before I am.

The route goes over Talla. That's cruel

I know from my few multi day epics that a cheer at the end and some chat is much appreciated. Although a hilly 135 miles to go, might be pushing it for midnight at this stage.

We could go down to the Talla to cheer him up?

Anybody got spray chalk for the road? (Sorry @HankChief.)

Mr Abraham is an epic rider, but this wee arctic fox is truly heroic: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-news-from-elsewhere-48824181

46km/day for three months is seriously impressive stuff.

Amazing effort from Steve Abraham. Congratulations to him: I wish I'd been up earlier to cheer him at the finish at Holyrood.

I see there's a rider about to come through Musselburgh. I might wander down with the dog and applaud.

She seems to have gone along the high street while we waited at the electric bridge. At least the dog got another walk.

Nicky Shaw on Queen's Drive passing Salibury Crags. Just a few hundred metres to go.

EDIT: She's finished in second place. Another epic ride! Well done!

Just learned that Ian Walker, the researcher who's studied close passes, is apparently on course to break the world record for cycling from the top of Europe to the bottom.

6300km in just over 18 days: http://drianwalker.com/toptobottom/ Should finish today.

    He's finished.

I also can't count - he did it in less than 17 days.

From Trans Alba Race FB page:

Wee update... Cary has made it over the second ferry and Glenn is waiting for the next one! Did Glenn slow down to "miss" the ferry? Mmmmm... Race for the Lanterne Rouge is heating up!

While walking along Princes St last night I noticed a guy unlocking his bike outside Tesco. The bike had multiple little bags strapped to it, all very nice and neat. "That's a nice bikepacking setup. I wonder where he was." I thought to myself.

When I got home I saw on Trans Alba Race FB page information and photos:
"Cap 21 Glenn Eck finished today with a time of 13 days, 9 hours and 58 minutes. Glenn almost dropped out with an injury, but after resting for a couple days he got back on the road and battled to the finish. Well done Glenn!"

That was the guy I saw. It must have felt pretty surreal to find himself in the middle of a busy city after 13 days of cycling around. Also all the fanfare was over and back on his own.

Cary our Lanterne Rouge has arrived! What a star, riding through the night pushing her biggest of the ride to bring it home! 13 days, 18 hours and 15 minutes! Congratulations Cary!

That's all folks! (Until next year...)

Anyone else doing Riding the Ghost on Sunday? Route has Ben changed due to landslip on North side of Loch Katrine, but should still be a goodie.

Also not sure if it was posted elsewhere on the site but have seen little comment on Fiona Kolbinger's win in this year's TCR. Superb performance on the toughest route yet.

Confirms that Women are able to compete on even terms with men at extreme distances (see Jasmin Paris, Lael Wilcox, Juliana Buhring and Sarah Hammond for further examples) I wonder if it will come to men being unable keep up with the women over greater distances

Mike Hall creat an opposite sex prize rather than a Women’s prize in anticipation of this happening. Some guy!
