Saw on Twitter that someone is going to attempt to cycle from Edinburgh to York in under 8 1/2 hours tomorrow. Leaving North Bridge at 8am.
Good luck to them that would be some going.
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.
Wasn’t much quicker on LNER on Tuesday
Needs to average just over 36 km/h (22 mph).
I think if I really wanted to, I could do that for about 5 miles.
@chdot, I hope you'll be applying for compensation...
@frenchy - Downhill? ;-)
Well obviously I’ll get all money back as it was over an hour.
If I had a return (as opposed to 2 cheap singles) I’d have got it all back.
Still asking for return journey too.
@HankChief - If you know of a 5 mile long downhill stretch, do say!
The forecast is for a south west wind on Wednesday, and he'll be going (on average) uphill.
Is there a reason he's going North-South?
Thanks for the reminder to claim for my delay Monday.
Claimed mine before I’d arrived!
The route looks like the flattest he could find but it's busy roads. If I was riding thew A68 all the way down to the border I'd be leaving VERY early doors to try and be well clear of any traffic. He's expecting based on his route card to be at the bypass in 16 minutes and Earlston in about 1 hour 30. I'd suspect that he'll be a touch slower to get to dalkeith than he expects but can likely make up time.
Seems weird trying to get out of Edinburgh at rush hour as well - still good on him.
Interested to see how he will get on!
"If I had a return (as opposed to 2 cheap singles) I’d have got it all back."
Seems not. We were delayed en route to Londinium last week. Return ticket, full price on both paper tickets. Only got outward leg price back.
Still, not bad: free travel even if over an hour late. Can't complain!
I'd be leaving VERY early doors
for sure, that was my first thought
seen this geezer about on local strava top 10s though
In general: 5 mile+ downhill stretch = north side of Glenshee
@arobcomp maybe the fella figures he is heading out and everyone else headin in?
@railtixclaimants, I have claimed to London twice and received the refund both times but only for the journey delayed Which makes sense. Both times was Virgin. The second one I had before I left Edinburgh as the 5.50 a.m. Cancelled and the 6 a.m. Takes another fifty minutes than the earliest train. So that is the hour already. I confess I was willing the later train not to arrive a minute early. It did not.
“Seems not“
Weren’t delayed enough.
He's off (& being held up by traffic).
From the Twitter link, I see that the legendary George Berwick holds the tandem record. Of course Edinburgh to York is just a short hop by his standards. Anyway, good luck to Doug - even though I don't understand why he chose to leave at peak rush hour time. And he will be arriving at the other end in rush hour too, if on schedule.
Yikes! He's going down the A1 past Newcastle! He must be having a following car for that bit? I've cycled the A68 to my parent's old house, (it was fun) but there's NO WAY I'd cycle that bit of the A1.
Good luck to him.
Just approaching the border. I suspect he's made up some time actually. Good on him!
Return ticket, full price on both paper tickets. Only got outward leg price back.
Wait, what?
When a standard single ticket cost about 10p less than a return, they should be refunding the price of the equivalent single tickets. The single-ticket-nonsense works both ways Mx. Train Company.

It depends on the delay and the type of ticket. If you've got an open return and you're delay is over an hour you get a refund of the whole ticket price over half an hour its 50% (?). If you've bought two advance singles you only get the 100% refund on the journey that was delayed.
Well over halfway now (105 miles), and average speed of 22.8 mph.
Definitely on course at the moment.
Cycled 55 miles and then monstered his way up Carter Bar. Blimey.
Yep very impressed at his current rate of knots.
He's certainly made up time lost leaving Edinburgh. Interesting to see how he gets on with this stretch!
150 miles down and he's into Yorkshire now, at an average speed of 22.72mph. Well on course for the record!
Took a couple of wrong turns in Northallerton, but back on track now.
Oops, wrong turn in Northallerton by the looks of it.
In answer to my own question, I'm guessing he chose to leave at 8am in order to maximise the benefit from today's northerly wind. At the moment it looks as though that decision will pay off.
