One of my colleagues had his bike stolen from his stair in Blackford yesterday between 1 and 3 pm. It is very distinct Red custom painted steel, bull horn handlebars with brakes at end of bars, fixed gear, Brooks saddle, child seat and VeloCityLight. Loads of sentimental value....Not sure where else to post this.

I know that bike - it's a beauty - such a shame - sorry to hear this
post here maybe helpful?

@ragingbike. I have a childseat your colleague can have, in order to get mobile again.

If you can get a photo and post it up, that would help with the search
Posted 5 years ago # -
He hasn't got a photo ... unfortunately
Posted 5 years ago # -
@biketrain he's got hold of one already but says big thanks.. I did suggest he tell the police that the child was still in the seat when the bike was stolen and they might put some effort into finding it... :-)

Not wishing to cast aspersions, but anyone else think £30 for an Orbea is a bit suss...?
Posted 5 years ago # -
Yes, extremely
Posted 5 years ago # -
is it an Orbea or an Obera? £30 for an Obera seems reasonable.

D'you supposed the police follow these people on fb?
I saw a white Revolution mtb on the NEPN near goldenacre yesterday (i think) and forgot to come in here and post a note. i couldn't see anyone at all in the area, and it wasn't locked up.

So my colleague spotted his stolen bike on gumtree being sold by someone in lanarkshire. He told the police last week and heard nothing. He then followed up with the police and they told him 'they can't do anything as they can't prove if the seller stole it'. The seller was also selling a job lot of bike parts and two chihuahuas. So my friend headed off with one of our mutual friends and bought it back.
I put the police's statement into google translate 'Lying plod to English' and it came out, 'We are telling a victim of crime a misleading statement about the law because we can't be arsed to do anything about it.

Surely, regardless of whether the seller stole it, it's still stolen property and the police have a duty to recover it? (assuming ownership can be proven, etc) Pretty poor response :(
I came out of a nearby Tesco last night to see the guy exiting in front of me surprise someone in the act of nicking his bike. The thief legged it. It was an average-looking bike, but notably the lock didn't look up to much. Opportunists everywhere, unfortunately.

I think the police were saying we have finite resources bit like when the dude asked the cops if they are looking for his stolen car in the big Lebowski. Yeah we got three teams on it working 24/7
But a more honest answer would be wee could investigate this but we are prioritising crimes where we know we can get a prosecution?
I hope raging bike's pal only paid fifty quid to get his bike back and go on safari with his presumably large buddy ? to Lanarkshire. (North?) I am concerned about the chihuahuas too.
Raging bikes pal could watch for this guy fencing more stuff I guess and build up a portfolio of evidence et cetera and present this to the police.?

Just reading Andy Wightman on stolen property. He points out that the offence of resetting (having possession of a stolen movable object in Scotland) has no limit of time. (Unlike stolen land which can become the thief's property after 20 years.)
If it was my bike I'd be making an official complaint and talking to the Daily Express.

Both my friends are 'very handy' and even they didn't hang around for long.... £70

As for the chihuahuas ...the pictures of them did look like he had shaved two rats ...

18 Months ago, a mate spotted my stolen bike on Gumtree and FB marketplace the day after it was nicked. The Police did come round, took a statement and viewed the posts, visited the chap (after applying for a warrant) who said he'd chucked the bike, but they still charged him. (I have no info on how that went thereafter)
I believe being able to point out my little vanity "name and flag" sticker on the frame in the photos he'd posted helped with the warrant application.

My colleague's bike was very distinctive and the police accepted that it was his..just couldn't be bothered

Which is why getting your bike on BikeRegister and having the frame etched or Smartwater/UV microdot marked along with the warning sticker is helpful.

First world problem, I know, but the high end Bike Register products don't work on titanium frames...
Posted 5 years ago # -
@Greenroofer I have this same issue- i have veloeye plain old sticker and have registered with bike register and insurance. i would not leave him anywhere outside.
Posted 5 years ago # -
@Greenroofer, is yours raw titanium rather than lacquered? I had that issue with the torpedo, as it's all raw carbon or raw aluminium, so it's the only one I've not etched. It has the QR stickers instead, one of which is obvious and one isn't.
BikeRegister is good to work with though; I've bought a lot of their kits for marking sessions at work.
I entertained the idea of going to the Cycle Crime Conference in That Birmingham, but it's right after the York Rally.
Posted 5 years ago # -
Pretty sure it's raw: it certainly feels like there's nothing on it. I've got a QR code sticker on it, very visibly. My concern is that with a bit of acetone or WD-40 it could be cleanly removed.

I understand that the labels are destructible polyester and use a proprietary solvent-based adhesive. That is why they take time to cure, unlike a conventional pressure sensitive sticker. I am not a chemist, but I suspect conventional products won't touch it.

I have my bike on immobilise, and when i registered, i got both a sticker and a doohickey that goes down the tube, like when you microchip a pet.
three lads wearing crap clothes and riding the hell out of a new-looking Trek down the hill into George V park. maybe they clubbed their pocket money together.
talking to someone earlier this week, who came out of a meeting to get on her rather new electric bike, only to see it next to the reception desk--a colleague had surprised theives in the act of stealing two bikes. locks were destroyed, but bikes ok.
Posted 5 years ago # -
I assumed the sticker was to let potential thieves know the bike was registered etc. rather than to "mark" the bike in case of resale? My Surly also has the immobilise thinger down the seat tube and their wee info sticker (now peeling at edges) on the frame.
Suppose I should get it etched too...

Husband had his Santa Cruz Heckler (2006 vintage, black) stolen from the back of the car last night in Murrayfield. (Someone broke a side window).
https://www.santacruzbicycles.com/en-GB/bike/heckler/5
It was languishing in the car as he recovers from breaking his shoulder at Glentress last week. 10 years ago it tipped him off with another nasty injury so he'd been about to replace it anyway. To whoever's nicked it: let's hope the curse of the Heckler passes to them!
