So it has been proposed that there should be a CCE day outing from Tweedbank to Portobello Prom following the Capital Trail route that me, @Iain McR and @Bill rode the other day.

Train out to Gala and ride back for a pint at the Dalriada before dispersal.

The route is a mix of paths, Landrover tracks, actual fields, woodland paths and quiet tarmac. There are three unbridged river crossings and maybe a kilometre of pushing for weaklings like me. The depth of those rivers is obviously a function of the weather but they were mostly ride-throughable last time.

Mountain bikes, decent hybrids, gravel and adventure bikes will cope. Granny gear certainly useful. Route rises to almost 500m so full body cover, survival bag, toolkit and all that jazz advised.

Anybody want to propose a weekend date?

Would this be a single-day affair? I'm tempted if so...

    @Iain McR - Sat 7th Sept

A heads up that the 7th Sept is the day before Pedal for Scotland, for anyone doing that.

I'm certainly tempted. I'll have to see what's in the diary and if I can get two passes in September. I'm hoping to also do the borders of fife.

If I had bothered to check my work diary earlier I wouldn't have had to get home before realising I'm working on the 7th sept. If it's another date I'll reconsider.

What date suits you? This is a collective endeavour.

Quite interested, too, though 90km in 6 hours offroad may be a challenge.

    Will there be cake stops?

I think Lauder after about 25K and Gifford @ 60K are the options.

    Cake in Lauder and Gifford.

We only seem to have the one proposed date. And I make the distance 75km.

@Arellcat only a part of it (about 40km? perhaps less) is off road really. The rest was a mix of roads, paths etc. We did it at leisurely pace, so you should be totes fine.

@Iain McR's GPS track appears to include the journey home Porty to his house, which I presume he isn't expecting everyone else to follow?

Some of us might want to peel off somewhere around the A1 underpass for Musselburgh and Dalkeith, as ending in Portobello means another 10-15 miles to get home.

I've just been asked (by Cycling Scotland, no less) if I will do PfS this year. I can't very well say no.

Is 7 September the final date or is there latitude to change it?

Would this need a geared bike? Would the terrain be suitable for the spikey winter tyres which are still currently on the geared bike and showing no indication of wishing to swap themselves?

There are sections where I pushed my geared bike as it had run out of gears. (Going the other way, but I expect the same this time.) There are steep sections of loose stones. There are sections which are simply un-mown grassy field.

There are people on here who could ride an aero TT bike over the route. I couldn't.

Gravel bike, mountain bike or decent hybrid would be my choices. Brakes very important.

Think I should be able to get along for this.
Un-mown grassy fields were always fine even back when I used 23mm tyres.

If the train is full do the public omnibi to Gala not also support bicycles?

@wingpig - yes. The bike carrying buses were spotted only yards from our palacial BnB in Gala.

The X62 is the bus in question, but you need to time your trip to catch the bike-carrying buses, as they aren't all suitably outfitted. I used it the other day.
