Piece in the Scotsman with picture over the Forth.

""I didn't fall at all. You have to stay focused on the penny farthing at all times because a pothole can make you crush. There was a day where I was cycling through a heavy storm but I managed. I was proud of the fact that I went up the hills very smoothly because the penny farthing doesn't have gears.

"I thought I was going to have to walk up the hills at first, so I wasn't expecting that. I saw some fantastic scenery especially through the Cairngorms, it was just glorious.""

Also consumed 11,000 calories a day.

11,000 Calories is some eating. 4,000 in a 24 hour NATO field ration pack for infantry on manouevres.

When I was a student I spent my summers exploring deep caves in Spain. The caves were so deep that we spent four days at a time underground, and a food diary I kept for a research project showed that I was eating 6,000 calories a day while underground. A bit like long-distance cycling: performance underground largely depended on how much food you could get into yourself.

Since then (it was 30 years ago...) I've lost both four inches off my chest, and the ability to do one-arm pull-ups.
Some of the people I did it with are still doing it:

The transcontinental race is on just now where most of the tweets from riders are what they are eating. I can't say it always looks that healthy as it is mainly from service stations.

I have to say we were spoilt on LEL where I had 25 different & hot 3 course meals in 4 days. No idea on the calorie intake but a lot and all necessary.
