It's happening! Tram works will begin on Constitution Street on the 18th of November.

The timings for construction across the route as well as traffic management plans are available here: http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/tramstonewhaven/info/3/consultation/3/consultation

I figured a master thread for the construction might be useful?

    What?

I thought they were going to start building from the York Pl end, so they could never end up with an incomplete bit in the middle if it all goes wrong?

@neddie Since the route is relatively small I believe the only workable cut-off points are at Constitution Street and Ocean Terminal so starting on Leith Walk wouldn’t really be that useful.

Although it would’ve been nice if they could’ve done the Picardy Place works now so they didn’t have to come back in two years!

The finalised designs are now up

    Some noteworthy active travel changes:
-The bus stops at the foot of the walk are now shared use areas (!) with zebras, seems very weird
-New cycle lane to bypass the lights if turning left at the foot of the walk/perhaps planned to connect to a cycle route through the Kirkgate
-Parking removed to provide a contraflow cycle lane on Brunswick Road
-New cycle lane connects straight from Picardy Place onto northbound Leith Walk cycle lane making an easier switch from bidirectional to unidirectional

They seem to have given up with any meaningful cycle facilities North of Great Junction St.

    My office is on the tram route. The works were just announced and the cry went up;

    'What about disabled people?'

There are no visibly disabled people in the office. Our customers rarely arrive by car at all.

Here we go, here we go, here we go.

Living Streets were celebrating the other day that the council has decided not to allow cycling in the Kirkgate, so presumably not that (though I suppose it might have been the intent.)

Contraflow lanes in the Forth/Union street area might be nice to allow the worst of the gyratory to be avoided.

Article not short of 'stuff that happened' but a little thin on 'analysis' and 'facts'.

Sounds like numbers look bad an opposition is pointing that out, but administration think everything is under control and it's just a scheduling thing? Are they going to miss out some roads or are we going to have lots of roadworks on the diversion routes over the next few months? Think Broughton is having a resurfacing festival atm or has that finished now?

One of the Lib Dem T&E councillors was complaining about this but it just seems that roads that were going to be resurfaced later are being done now and some roads that were going to be resurfaced this year will be done next year. Hardly end of the world...

Broughton being resurfaced now (in the evenings like Easter Rd).

Do the tram works still need a TRO/RSO or do they get around this via the tram line legislation?

Leith Walk traffic management maps are up for the enabling works. The map isn't great so I can't tell if the cycle lane is being blocked or not.

They're adding a bunch of "Be Aware Of Cyclists" signs which make me think it will be.

Looks like the whole / majority of the pavement is designated a "work area", so I'm pretty certain the cycle lane is being closed.

Traffic management is going up right now on Leith Walk. The segregated part is open so far but the on-road cycle lane is closed.

But don’t worry, they’ve put up some signs up to be careful so it’ll be fine.

There's orange plastic barriers over the segregated cycle lane Southbound around The Black Fox (near Tesco), which I think are over the dropped kerb - in any case, the options are to cycle to the left of the barriers on the pavement where the width is now about 1.5m, or to bounce out between parked vehicles into the lane of traffic, which is... not ideal.

I've tweeted @edinhelp to ask for it to be signposted (Since I don't seriously expect they'd put in a cycle diversion around the barriers).

The barriers look like they might not be related to the tram works however - the dug up part of footway / cycleway looks like it's for utilities.

There’s cycle lane closed signs at both the on-road and segregated cycle lanes now.

Although, should you live life on the edge, the segregated route is still usable for the moment.

@CycleAlex - Thanks for the update! I was hoping they'd only "close" part of the cycle lane around those barriers, but in fairness the original plans do look like the whole lane is closed. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

At least in less than two years we should have segregated lanes all the way down the Walk!

@EdinburghCycleCam If there’s any other issues with the traffic management it might be worth speaking to Trams to Newhaven directly rather than @edinhelp - they have live chat on http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/tramstonewhaven/ and are very responsive.

The works will benefit the cycling community in the longer term as they are vital to creating the south (city) bound running lane that is needed for the larger section from London Rd to Manderston street. This will allow for guaranteed cycling infrastructure to be accommodated in the longer duration temporary traffic management scheme from Spring 2020 which will create a much safer space for cyclists during the main works.
From the T2N website - seems to imply there will be cycle provision during the Leith Walk works?

    @EdinburghCycleCam No worries!

Could only be less safe if they let a leopard loose.

If they don't spend the entire business support fund on that I will be deeply disappointed.

I was charmed to watch the orange plastic safety barriers being blown at me last night. Who is it that specced that lightweight Toytown kit for a country with ten windstorms every winter?

Segregated and on-road cycle lanes on Leith Walk are open again over Christmas. No construction till January.

Traffic management map is up for Ocean Drive outside Ocean Terminal: https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/tramstonewhaven/downloads/file/206/ocean-drive-traffic-management-plan

Looks like all the bus stops at Ocean Terminal are out of action which will be interesting.

I assume the shared use bit won't be available as it specifically states "3.5 metre Running Lane Combined Vehicle/Cycle Route"

    The cycle lane to nowhere.

From speaking to someone from SFN (main contractor), the initial plans were to keep the citybound cycle lane as is but it's since been decided to rebuild it grade separated from the pavement.
