Am probably going to delete my Strava account anyway, because of reasons 8, 9, 11 , and 14 in the following

Veloviwer: Difficult explorer squares

Given how much data Strava have, both individually and collectively, they make a pretty p*ss poor job of analysing and presenting it back to an interested user. And for a rapidly escalating price.
Veloviewer OTOH, does an excellent job for a very reasonable price. I’d quite happily pay VV what I pay Strava and ditch Strava’s proto-Muskian nonsense.

Why should other users be able to see my Strava data through other apps without my consent...
@neddie, they shouldn't. However if I give them permission then they should be able to do whatever I let them with it. Under the new rules they wouldn't even be allowed to show the data to my coach (if I had one).
@murrun. I agree. At this point strava is merely serving as a conduit to get data to other sites.

@acsimpson A lot of the problems with consent stem from the fact the apps are permissive by default, and permission is assumed.
“Oh you can just switch this off later by doing x y z and these complicated instructions”, is not consent

A bicycle does not surveil you (on its own). Vanmoof possibly excepted.

Fully agree with Murun that VV gives outstanding value for money and if I could find a way to populated it without needing Strava would drop my Strava subscription in a flash. Ben Lowe engages with his users so well, and listens as much to the tiler paying £10 as the pro teams.
Strava has too many patronising AI notifications that I can't turn off. I've no interest in people's indoor activities and would happily turn those off if I could.

Back to difficult tiles, currently trying to time my availability to match non firing times at Barry Buddon near Carniustie. This game is about patience!
Posted 6 months ago # -
That sounds familiar. I've got some tidal squares who seem to have very different schedules to me.
Curiously I have the non coastal squares at Barry Buddon. But they date from the commonwealth games, several years before I started to target squares.

I took advantage of the spring tides to pick up 5 new tiles West of Aberlady, starting at Longniddry Bents and heading out to explore the sands, got wet up to knees. Also bagged the tile in Gosford House, lovely ox bow ponds, and discovered the farm shop there.A productive morning.

Having just retrieved my bike from @Hartscylery I went out for a ride round Dalmeny last night. I got down to the coast and discovered it was just over an hour until low tide. Of course I then did what any sane person would and followed in @Paddyirish's footsteps to get the square just north of Barnbougle Castle.
I could only feel my feet again after getting home and showering.

Excellent work @acsimpson. The square to the east of Barnbougle Castle is also reachable from Long Green if you haven't done that, it's a bit muddier but very doable.
I've not got a lot of time to go chasing new tiles and have started targeting Squadratinhos at Squadrats.com. (for Squadratinhos take every VV square (or Squadrat) and divide into 64) gives you lots of mini tiles near home never visited... Try to get a new cluster (yardinho) or square ubersquadratinho).
This morning, I took advantage of the lowest tide I've ever seen at Burntisland together and additional 14 Squadratinhos, a lot further out from Black Rock than I've managed before. Involve a lot of knee deep barefoot paddling ...

That looks interesting. Although apparently it is going to take them a few days to import my data.
I've actually cycled into the next square east. It's quite easy to access from the Cramond Island Causeway. It's was the last ride I did on my old bike so wasn't overly worried about the effects of salt water. It wasn't badly harmed but still retired to turbo training duties.
Incidentally there is an even lower tide forecast for the end of them month. I'll hopefully be able to target the square to the east of Cramond Island then.
Posted 2 months ago # -
@acsimpson Is that square ever accessible (relatively) dryshod? I’d love to bag that square.
Posted 2 months ago # -
It looks like it from land occasionally but I've never been there with the freedom to find out. I'll tell you at the end of the month.
Posted 2 months ago # -
Definitely will have a look. So much potential round the Forth. I also have my eye on a tile NW of Blackness that should be accessible as well as 3 near Lower Largo, and a few E of N Berwick.
Others that I do have are the one due South of Torryburn and about 6 West of Gullane/Longniddry/Aberlady I assume you already have those ones N of Cockenzie and Port Seton?

If within the rules would it be simpler to borrow @DaveC’s kayak?
Posted 2 months ago # -
The rules are what you make them. Some people are happy driving to near a square and walking in it (although usually they would walk in/out of it.) Others prefer to ride there from home while most people do a mixture.
Veloviewer will sync any strava activity so kayaking and even kite surfing would work.
Although the tides are less critical borrowing a canoe definitely makes a trip more logistically challenging.
@Paddyirish, I've just realised that the square to the east of Barnbougle you were referring to is likely north of the one I cycled into. It's quite a bit further out but as you say still above mean low tide.
I've not done a huge number of tidal squares so far as I'm more of an opportunist than a planner when it comes to them. I haven't even done Fisherrow yet.

Certainly those who wantto cover Munros or hill rnages will look at driving to the area and then exploring from there. Likewise a holiday or family base as well
I do rides and walks in the Dundee area. My daughter does a weekly climbing lesson - I have time to explore in all directions by both bike and on foot.
In terms of tidal tiles, I've used my paddleboard a fair bit to access squares further offshore. But there is something fun and about waiting for a low tide and wading through mud...
Also Blackness and Cramond could be visited on the same day when linked by bike, but it would be a very big day by paddleboard...Posted 2 months ago # -
The end of the month is almost here and I can confirm the square east of Cramond Island is always wet. However it can be waded. This morning when the low tide was -0.1m the water level was up to my chest. There's definitely some soft patches in the seabed but with trial and error I found a way round them remaining on terra fimish into the corner of the square.
It would be quite an easy square to swim to during a normal sitting low tide but I wouldn't fancy it with today's steady off shore breeze.

Eek! Congratulations on your intrepid tiling.
Based on your feedback, I’ll revisit the idea at the ultra low daytime tide in August next year…
Posted 2 months ago # -
I don't know how low the tide will be during a total eclipse. But 2 things seem likely.
1) You will still have to leave terra firma.
2) The water will be warmer that it was yesterday.Posted 1 month ago # -
Fantastic work @acsimpson. I think I was knee deep in mud when I went there- I think the sands/muds must have shifted.
I had to go back over to Ireland at the weekend- the only tidal experience was seeing a sandbank in Loch Foyle that neither my parents nor I had seen before.
Squares wise not a lot of progress in VV - my Squadrats yardinho (the 17x17 tiles) is up to 830 from 150 when I started. I got asked to leave a farmers 4WD track between Aberdour and Burntisland while trying to join up my main cluster with the Burntisland/Kinghorn one. 1000 should be very easy, but I'll need to take to the water on the paddleboard to spread to S Queensferry and Burntisland and beyond...

“I got asked to leave a farmers 4WD track between Aberdour and Burntisland.”
Doesn’t sound legal(?)
Posted 1 month ago # -
It's lambing season so that may be the reason.
Posted 1 month ago # -
@paddyirish where exactly were you between Aberdour and Burntisland?
Posted 1 month ago # -
Not a sheep farm @acsimpson.
@boothym was looking to follow.4WD tracks Nnof A 921, from near Ninelums to Kilmundy seemed to be good on the map and parallel to A932 towards Aberdour. But I'm not here to pick fights with farmers, I'll use my paddleboard and get the sea tiles instead.

“near Ninelums to Kilmundy”
‘Well known’ farm/er.
Likely the same one who strongly challenged Core Path proposals (and succeeded).

Give up tile collecting and enter thr velogames Giro competition. @acsimpson @paddyirish @murunbuchstansangur

Took advantage of a still day to take the paddleboard out to Carr Craig from Silver Sands. 3 new water tiles. Hoping to get about another 20 in the inner Forth.
Also nabbed the Squadratinhos that allowed me to link Aberdour, Burntisland and Kinghorn with the rest of my Yardinho,.so.got round the annoying farmer...
