Defense Sec. Esper: "I do not support invoking the Insurrection Act."

"The option to use active-duty forces in a law enforcement role should only be used as a matter of last resort and only in the most urgent and dire of situations. We are not in one of those situations now."

Difficult position policing these demos. Right to protest Vs clear breach of the current coronavirus legislation.

Although this demo may seem worthy, others have been broken up by the Police - small release lockdown demos for example. Don't see how the police can pick and choose whats 'worthy' or not.

the pictures from yesterday's socially distanced protest at parliament square look very sensible.

thanks SRD - looks like 1 at Holyrood indeed - what I saw suggested strict distancing and masks, but I realise it does seem incongruous given the current situation. Personally I think it's too important to stand up and be counted on this one, but I'm sure everyone will do so as safely as possible.

My view is that important as the subject is: If you are going to be there in significant enough numbers to make an impact, then you aren't going to be able to maintain social distancing. Do people now believe that masks make evrything ok? The overriding need at the moment is to contain the virus.

Outdoor airborne transmission with masks on, risks seem fairly low with sufficient distancing and a bit of wind, given current empirical data. but obivously the risk is still not zero.

Two incredibly important issues, it's a tough call. Think I'm going to stay at home and feel slightly guilty but wouldn't discourage any one else from going.

Potentially lots of people putting themselves at risk making train and bus journeys to get there. Not all attendees I suspect will be Edinburgh residents.

Thanks for comments - I must admit I'm struggling to know what's right - it is of course most important at the moment to contain the virus. For very personal reasons I feel I need to be there - it's not a decision I take lightly.

“For very personal reasons I feel I need to be there - it's not a decision I take lightly.”

I’m sure most people there will have travelled less than 5 and will be very conscious of what 2m looks like.

Activists say the way to stop police brutality and killings is to cut law enforcement budgets and reinvest in services. Some lawmakers now agree

    ...

Government officials have long dismissed the idea as a leftist fantasy, but the recent unrest and massive budget shortfalls from the Covid-19 crisis appear to have inspired more mainstream recognition of the central arguments behind defunding.

If low attendance mibbes @chdot. The London one was crowded. Dont get me wrong I have been fighting racism for 40 years and in various somewhat risky scenarios (football terraces, glasgow pubs), Because I find it the single most abhorrent thing on the planet.

Surely there is another way to have a mass participation event that doesn't legitimise Cummings, and further risk essentially ending lockdown?

To be fair I don't know of it...

'advice' relates to England, and an MP apparently recommending legal representation if needed.

I have been thinking carefully about this. I thought if I had my bike with me, that might encourage distance?

If I do decide to go, I'll see what it looks like at the moment. I'm up for citizenship next year, and don't fancy having a charge sheet.

“and don't fancy having a charge sheet”

Better not cycle through any red lights then!

As to the demo, I think any arrests are unlikely (just for being there anyway).

It’s possible that the police will warn about social distancing and could take action if advice/instructions are ignored.

    I’m not a lawyer -

No idea if the law is worded tightly enough to cover people being in the same place at the same time but aren’t there specifically to meet/become a ‘group’.

    From link -

Scotland's justice secretary, Humza Yousaf, and Chief Constable Iain Livingstone have both pledged that policing of the protests will be "proportionate", and that they will be allowed to go ahead.

Mr Yousaf has used the example of protests against lockdown in Glasgow in May as a model.

He said that event was attended by an estimated 30 to 40 people with one arrest, adding: "They were allowed to say their piece and then they were asked to disperse, and the vast, vast majority of them complied with that order from the police."

I suspect this time there will be more people.

Clearly it’s not about ‘as many people as possible’.

Many people will not be there for a wide range of reasons.

If I was within 5 miles I’d probably go - and keep well distanced.

Much as I would want to attend, I am not putting my health or anyone else's at risk.

There are possibly better ways to protest:
