Closed by police. Seems that one of us has been badly hurt.

This is chilling - thoughts are with the cyclist and their family...

From the closures, it seems to have happened at the crossroads. Hope the cyclist is ok.

The Ladbrokes in the photo in the last tweet is on West Preston Street.

“The Ladbrokes in the photo in the last tweet is on West Preston Street.“

Either ‘mistaken identity’ or one of those involved came from EPSt(?)

Newington Road / East Preston Street now reopened following a collision earlier this morning.

A 24-year-old male cyclist was taken to hospital after he [was] knocked down by a car on East Preston Street this morning.
Emergency services were called to the scene around 6:30am.

The cyclist was treated at the scene before being taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Several roads around the scene of the accident were closed following the collision.

Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “We were called around 6.30am to a report of a serious crash between a car and a cyclist in East Preston Street, Edinburgh.

“A 24-year-old man was taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary by the Scottish Ambulance Service.”

This is heartbreaking, and I really hope he recovers well and soon without any longterm issues.
The big irony here is - he's a key worker and was on his way to work at the RI. This clearly shows that isolated cycling infrastructure like along Old Dalkeith Rd has only a limited benefit - we need a safe cycling network in Edinburgh, to ensure people can commute to work in a safe way on their bikes!

So awful. Hope he makes a full recovery

Warning. Fairly graphic image of the vehicle / bike.

Presume that’s from this morning, not really near either Preston Streets.

May I ask how this is known? If it's public knowledge then I will use it shamelessly to argue for a full network.

I'm a little concerned that there's no mention of the driver in any of these news stories. Were they the keeper of the vehicle? Did they decamp?

If that pic is from yesterday's incident, the car hit the back wheel of the bike square on and at great speed unless the car is made of tinfoil. I'd expect that to be an instant arrest.

@Trixie, yes. A satin or matt black BMW with heavily tinted rear windows is, however unfortunately, the type of vehicle that suggests a driver who is somewhat freer with their habits.

    That picture. [Rule 2]

Hard not to project the lives of the two people involved into the future and become angry on behalf of one of them.

I don't want to fan the flames of rumour, however I just read a comment that makes sense. Impact happened back at EP St, car only came to a halt down Newington Road. That would explain the police markers on the junction.

“I don't want to fan the flames of rumour”

CCE is very good at avoiding ‘damaging’ speculation.

“I just read a comment that makes sense.”

    Where?

“Impact happened back at EP St, car only came to a halt down Newington Road.”

That seems to fit the (few) known facts.

    Quite chilling.

'Edinburgh Crime and Breaking Incidents' on FB. Run by EEN to get pics and stories without leaving the home office. There's also a pic from a different angle that would seem to verify that the horrific pic is indeed from yesterday and not a Photoshop or something.

Don't go past the Sally Army for a bit if you're of a squeamish disposition. I won't elaborate publicly.

    @ R

    Thanks for not elaborating.

Would have thought there shouldn’t be anything to see a day later.

Anyone any idea why the police are so quiet on this?

@Arellcat: I’m pretty certain I’ve had cause for concern about that particular car before.

Some confirmation bias perhaps but looks like a bad car

“cause for concern about that particular car before“

Anything worth contacting the police about - now?

@chdot: nothing I remember in enough detail to be of use. I may be mixing it up with another car, but it’s pretty distinctive.

Theory: the driver is a minor Yakuza and the police are busy digging up his uncle's garden.
