How many bikes do you have in your possession currently?

    We're down to five after clearing out two hack bikes and a frameset that I'd had for too long.

    In order of mileage:

    - Raptobike recumbent lowracer from Laidback bikes
    - road bike with bodged pannier rack for her commute
    - my hardtail
    - her hardtail
    - my fixed-wheel road bike (used to be the workhorse, now relegated by the lowracer)

    We only really have room for four bikes in the cupboard so I'm in the process of consolidating further, by fitting my hardtail as a town bike with slicks, and letting the fixie go. The next n+1 is going to be a replacement too, for SWMBO's road bike.

    If we had a garage, I hate to think what it would be!

    Hmmm.
    Just the one: EBC Continental Race 2005, made usable with fatter tyres (though sadly nothing heavier than 25C Armadilloes will fit), mudguards, a better saddle and a stem extension.
    My previous bike is now just a 25" 20+y.o. 531 frameset in the loft. Almost all moving parts will need to be replaced for which I shall eventually get round to asking for advice.

    Pre-emptive

    Is it 'so old' that it used to have 27" wheels?

    If so replace with 700c - more room for bigger tyres.

    Add dual pivot brakes.

    Select gears suitable for your intended use.

    This might mean a single chainring with a wide block/cassette or perhaps hub gears.

    Hard to beat a 531 frame and forks for longevity and comfort.

    Always good to have a 'spare' bike (or two).

    Time to update methinks!

    Four.

    * 2009 Giant Bowery 72 singlespeed. Pretty much as bought except colour co-ordinated Vittoria Rubino tyres added and less useless saddle added and gear increased from 74 to 81 inches
    * 2004 Trek 1000. Since last posted it has had replacement wheels, carbon fork, new saddle and seatpost, complete BB / crankset / brake calliper replacement with Shimano 105 and sexed up with yellow bar tape and cabling. Now performs well as a commuting hack and rainy day bike
    * 2010 Ridgeback Panorama. Reynolds 925 tubed 27-speed tourer. Sexed up with yellow bar tape. Has performed well as shopping / recycling / load carrying / towpath compatible hack and inaugural tour imminent. Many tours around Scotland planned for next year, first of which to Jura to visit Barnhill in homage to Eric Blair and to climb the paps which I have so often gazed at from Islay
    * 2010 Cannondale CAAD9 105 compact. Recent purchase on my own 0% finance "bike to play with" scheme. Sexed up with yellow bar tape, cabling, tyres and pedals but otherwise as out the box. Utter joy to ride and goes like buggery up hills

    Three:

    A quite old EBC Cuillin MTB - hung up on the wall - needs overhaul

    A Ridgeback Horizon (about 6 years old) - blue race bike with mudguards - generally used at weekends e.g with ERC

    A Bianchi Camaleonte (two years old) - celeste hybrid with hub gears - for commuting esp in winter

    We currently have three.
    1. Me - Black Revolution Cross from the EBC.
    2. My better half - Silver Revolution something women's bike (kindly left on Portobello prom with a note saying "Going overseas - help yourself" (so we did).
    3. Son (aged 3) - blue child's bike (less chainguard) acquired 2nd hand at a sale of 'stuff' for babies and children. Well known brand but not so well known that I can remember it.
    4. Daugher (aged 18 months) - A wooden balance bike currently located in the garden shed awaits her on her 2nd birthday.
    We are also soon to become the proud owners of a tandem.

    Three,
    Hybrid/tourer/commuter thingy made from an old 80's Trek MTB. (some of whose parts will shortly be joined with a shiny new Surly LHT frameset B-)) Unfortunately now with a punctured front tyre :-(
    Giant OCR4 roadie type bike clamped to the turbo trainer awaiting being sold
    Charge Duster (Tange prestige loveliness) MTB, far far better cross country than I'll ever be, but too soft and too gnarly tyres to really be fun on tarmac (unless I suddenly get a lot fitter..)
