Thanks @Morningsider - that did make me laugh.

What I don't understand is that the first I heard of this quiet route proposal was on Councillor Arthur's Blog which I believe was in response to this by Councillor Ross (I may well be wrong)

    https://democracy.edinburgh.gov.uk/mgAi.aspx?ID=16738

    (meeting today btw)

if that's the case - how did all these people find out about to complain?

Councillor Ross did a leaflet drop to residents on Sunday to alert them to complain about lack of consultation, and to propose a watered down ineffective alternative. I suspect that triggered some complaint letters. I sent another letter to him and the other councillors strongly in support and particularly how it benefits other schools other than just James Gillespies . That was the only school he mentioned in his leaflet.

Yes, caught the end of it.

Disappointing but predictable comments from the LibDems.

And Scott Arthur sitting on the fence by not voting.

    Hopefully this comes to fruition.

Coalition amendment passed and motion by Neil Ross didn't go through: 32 to 25 I think with one abstention (Cllr Scott Arthur).

    `Deletes all:
Notes that a proposal for a Quiet Route between Greenbank Crossroads and the
Meadows, designed to establish a network of safe quiet streets using modal filters and to
provide a safe cycleway from Fairmilehead to the city centre, will come forward to the
Transport and Environment Committee on Nov 12th.
Notes that some of this proposal builds on suggestions from local community group
    ‘Blackford Safer Streets’.
Notes that stakeholder engagement has not yet begun ahead of the report on November
    12th.
Recognises that there is considerable concern circulating in communities about the
consultation process for Spaces for People projects already agreed to by this Council.
Notes that the agreed process includes a feedback mechanism for each project on
issues raised by stakeholders, including community councils and elected ward members,
as well as the stated intention to amend schemes post-implementation if appropriate (‘try
    and modify’ method).
Requests a meeting among all relevant ward councillors and transport spokespersons,
convened by the Transport Convener, before Oct 3 to allow questions to be raised and
for a comprehensive briefing on these proposals to be provided, including clarification on
    community consultation.`

    That's good news algo.

Is the text you posted above the coalition amendment that passed?

yep I think so - the coalition and green amendment were put together and passed I believe - the text above is the coalition amendment (essentially throwing out Neil Ross's calls to scrap the route outright at this point).

You can see the full amendment texts here:

What is Scott Arthur doing abstaining?

Herr Professor Doktor Arthur really is a trickster ain't he?

Well done to the Blackford Girls and Boys.

I’m not sure what’s happened to Dr Arthur. He does not seem to be friendly towards bike infra anymore, alas...

I think Herr Doktor Professor Stadtrat Arthur is having a moment.

Everything he believes in is evaporating in front of his eyes and he is withdrawing to his ward like an Iron Age chieftan getting the sheep into the fort.

If you listen, initially he remained silent and there was presumed to be a technical problem. They returned to him at the end and he sheepishly said he would have to abstain

Apparently this is about to happen (at Sciennes Primary) -

Sciennes Road – close road to all traffic, except waste vehicles and emergency services, whilst maintaining access for cyclists through barrier.

Great news about the committee - thanks to all have fought to get this far.

And also good about Sciennes Road. I heard that there were vague plans to close it permanently once the Sick Kids had gone, so hopefully that's it now.

Yes sick kids has quietly moved to little France, or most departments.

Road will presumably reopen when the developers move in?

I know a psychiatrist who lives directly behind the hospital. He will have lots of new neighbours. Think he owns a house on an island too, or maybe whole island and has a wooden yacht so you can freak him by saying I see the tornado worm is back at Granton Harbour etc

Think the development is specifically designed to work around the closure. Don't think the Sciennes Road bit will be a car park.

    Just seen this:

    https://twitter.com/EdinReporter/status/1306605208307462144?s=20

one minor thing is this is not BSR's plan- it incorporates *some* of the ideas and adds a whole load more

@algo: worth dropping Phyllis (Edinburgh Reporter) a DM to ask her to change that last sentence. She’s on board with all of this and I’m sure she’ll be happy to update it.

thanks @Stickman - have done that - I know she's very supportive in general. Indeed on our first bike bus she stood in the road in front of a van and protected the kids :-)

    History...

Councillor Orr said: -“One of our primary priorities is to encourage people to switch to public transport and active travel. This is better in many ways such as reducing congestion, air pollution and wear and tear on the roads.

Some good news about Newbattle Tce:

The final plans from CEC include many of Blackford Safe Routes recommendations, including:

    • Traffic reduction by means of a “shuttle system” set of traffic signals
    • Footway widening to an adequate width on the very narrow section
    • Continuous footway across Morningside Rd., Pitsligo Rd. and Eden Lane
    • Traffic reduction on Pitsligo Rd. by means of a short one-way section near Newbattle Tce.

Updated plans and more info here:
    http://blackfordsaferoutes.co.uk/jgps-travel-committee/consultation-responses/newbattle-tce-resurfacing-carriageway-improvements-response/

(sorry, mgi, your Pitsligo Rd rat-run is now much less attractive)

Looks like a vast improvement! Nice work.

(the purist in me feels like it would have been much cheaper to just filter the stretch between Pitsligo Road and Falcon Gardens, but this is probably easier to get through for now...)

Ian Murray has a survey about this which I'm sure could use some more input! https://www.ianmurraymp.com/edinburgh-south/2020/09/30/survey-meadows-to-greenbank-quiet-route/

    I've said

"At present we are driving the children to school from Morningside to Lauriston Place because it's too far to walk and too dangerous for them to cycle, and we're leaving space on public transport for others who don't have a choice. Many of the cars on the road at that time are also parents driving their children to school. If there were safe routes for cycling, they would ride a bike to school, taking a car off the road and leaving space on the buses.
People who say that there's no problem with social distancing on the roads covered by this route miss the point. It's not about these roads, it's about creating a safe route for people to travel through the area by bike, creating space for social distancing on buses and pavements.
I strongly support this proposed quiet route, and the other limited interventions that the council has made in Morningside and Bruntsfield. I would like to see more. We are in the midst of a health crisis, an obesity crisis and an environmental crisis that needs bold and urgent action. We must push the private motor car to the very bottom of the hiearchy of road users, creating liveable spaces in our urban areas, and encouraging active travel."

Looks like Braid Rd has been resurfaced. I note they didn’t bother to widen the pavement, leaving almost all the space to (future?) stationary & moving cars

I wrote an article for POP about this route:
    https://pedalonparliament.org/liveable-neighbourhoods-returning-the-streets-to-the-people/.
I then got asked to retract my claim that Neil Ross proposed a motion to scrap the route. Fair enough - he wanted full community consultation so I understand "scrapping" was bad vernacular.

However - I find their attitude (see below missives) somewhat retrograde - particularly as we are in an unprecedented time when we are already being asked to modify behaviours. I am meeting with Neil Ross and will try and appraise him of various try and modify methodologies such as PDCA/PDSA. I think he himself is acting in what he believes to be a principled way and I understand where he is coming from about consultation - the problem is the reality is years and years of delay as we all know too well.
