@edinburgh87 I am undecided whether to pursue rides of longer than 200km this year, yet. The calendar is a bit constrained due to work, meaning that holidays may trump audax plans. Next ride booked is the Debatable Lands from Hawick - looks hilly. Then I have the Twilight Zone 300km perhaps, Seahouses and Back from Hawick and the TotBaG 600. If I do decide to go big, I may go for a DIY 400km.

@mercury1and2 sorry I haven't heard of that. Helensburgh is a good place to start a ride.

I'm moving up a step in audax terms this weekend. An interesting 300 from the Northumberland coast to the Solway coast and back. Bits of Hadrians Wall en route. Nice weather forecast and it's not as hilly as some.

Sounds good Amir - look forward to hearing how you get on, I’ve eyed that event in the past. Hoping to extend RTTS to a 3 or 400 later in the month depending on how our move goes

No Piper at top of Beeftub this year

But apparently some bananas will be spaced at distances from each other on gravel,of the Crook Inn.

    RTTS

@gembo - the cyclo-rave additionally sounds almost as surreal as the first time I clapped eyes on Eskdalemuir monastery. Have never ridden RTTS, I'm not too bothered about massive groups anyway but it will be nice at the end of a solo DIY to know there's someone near(ish) up or down the road..

@edinburgh87 the rave is peculiar. Full on light show and DJ and dry ice. Lot of cyclists wandering around eating bananas and drinking water

The Solway C2C2C was fun on Saturday. Lovely route through Northumbria and Cumbria from Cresswell to Bowness on Solway. The weather was good and dry, but with a strong breeze headwind for the first half. This was hardest on the Roman road next to the wall until Gilsland, when hedges re-emerged. Then the last stretch along the edge of the Solway from Carlisle to Bowness was a beautiful grind.
This was the largest event I've done for some time, with around 100 participants, starting between 7 and 7.30am. I started around 7.10 and enjoyed the first few km passing and being passed by other participants. To add to the socialbility, our route merged in with a sportive by Chollerford for a while, along Stanegate.
The way back started well with the immediate impact of the now tailwind being gratefully received. Then the route turned up lanes with hedges and alarmingly steep slopes, and the benefit was lost for a while. On that part the odometer hardly moved. At Corbridge, I met up with a friend and enjoyed a lovely end to the ride. Chatting really does help reduce the distance. My usual buddies hadn't signed up to this ride, so mostly I rode solo.

Next Sunday's audax (Debatable Lands) from Hawick returns to Hadrian's Wall. Anyone else going?

@amir - looked like a really good route and enjoyed, twinged with a tiny bit envy, the various Facebook and strava updates from riders over the weekend. I’m entered on Sunday but we get the keys to our new place on Friday so will likely be unpacking all weekend. Might make it if we can break the back of it on Friday / Sat. My current plan is an extended RTTS next weekend, Twilight Zone in July, both in prep for TotBaG in August. Also entered the Border Nights 400 in September. Really like the idea of a 3pm start for a change. Are you on any of these? Hope we see a few orange jerseys anyway!

So far the Twilight Zone and TotBaG. Not sure on the latter yet.
    Good luck with the move!

@amir thanks for your report of C2C2C!

I am also signed up for TotBaG (carried over from last year). I will sign up for the Twilight zone.

Planning to go to Mull of Galaway and back on the 26th. Hopefully the weather plays along.

Have you folks booked accommodation yet for the Tote Bag? I am hanging on until our holiday plans are settled (sometime in August depending on a multiplex of factors)

Got a hotel booked in Longtown the night before, and will likely be alfresco during the event itself, or sleep in Gretna services. Will have a sleep at the end before driving back home

Accommodation at Lockerbie truck stop seems to be off currently. So looks like service station nap

I'm doing the 4 tops now rather than the Twilight Zone next weekend. The lure of new roads. Then Seahouses and Back. The 600 is still in question for me. I struggle with energy the following week and my current work is too sensitive to be off form. (other excuses are available)

The four tops looks a great route, with some long climbs, hopefully not overly steep.

@amir - Twilight Zone for me. Four Tops looks like a good route though, I've always meant to try more of the Ponteland / Tyneside events. The 600 is a daunting prospect I'll admit. Firing on 3 out of 4 cylinders this year myself..will probably start it, keep pedalling and see what happens..if for no other reason than to get some value out of my prepaid hotel booking at the start :)

Ponteland is good because of cheap accommodation near the airport and lots for OHs to do in the area (even a train into the toon)

    I grew up in Ponteland...
I've never done any of the Audaxes, because I wasn't going to go and visit my parents for the weekend and then disappear off on my bike all day! (Now they don't live there any more, maybe I should go back for an Audax?)

Brilliant day out yesterday. Lots of climbing in the hills south of the Tyne. Great if you like very long climbs. Included Alston Moor, Yadd Moss, the bit between Middleton and Stanhope and Allenheads. All gorgeous. But definitely more than 4 hills. Legs extra stiff today. And almost saw Barnard Castle but I need my eyes testing

    But that’s the point

If you need your eyes testing, you NEED to go there.

Perhaps you’re telling stories to obscure something?

Also a great day out on Twilight Zone (Gala-Alston-Gala). Very warm and muggy with some drizzle in the morning and a shower in the evening.
Shame I missed @amir in Alston.

I like how quiet Ettrick valley is during this event. Not a single car between Selkirk and Langholm on the way down and on the way back only a few cars between Ettrickbridge and Selkirk.

It was even warm enough to sit outside McDonald's at the end.

@bill, the Ettrick valley has a low population or a better road fro drivers elsewhere?

@gembo that road is busy during the day (day trippers plus some locals perhaps?) but seems that not before 9am and after 5pm.
