    Folks,

Winterval holiday challenge: fabricate a three-string cigar box guitar on a budget of zero.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000c7pf

Post a photo and a soundcloud of it being played the badder the better.

This is not a musical challenge. This is a challenge of unhinged invention and scrounging. Forage, steal, borrow materials and tools. Build while tipsy play when blazing.

@iwrats: excellent stuff. The cigar box guitar community on YouTube has given me a lot of entertainment over the past year. Seriously tempted to try the challenge, although my general hamfisted incompetence is the main obstacle to overcome.

I have never made a cigar box guitar, but did build my first bass guitar on a budget of £25, back in about 1995.

Man, this is sooo three years ago... :-)

(I have a cigar box slide guitar stashed somewhere in the flat).

    @Stickman

Welcome onboard. I'll hear no talk of fists, ham-flavoured or otherwise! Cannot wait to see/hear what you come up with.

The mullet is also coming back. And what is three years to CCE? Two consultations on a dropped kerb?

Can you also clarify if your mullet is coming back?

I found some table legs in the street. That is all.

    For the moment.

I have found a piece of metal, three bits of hardboard, four bits of wood and an amusing item.

Neighbour said sadly no I could not put anything in their skip, then realised I was proposing taking stuff out and agreed enthusiastically. I said thanks in Polish cos I am cool that way.

So everybody else has a kitchen full of wood chips too, yes?

@Iwrats, the others have asked me to break this to you - you are the winner.

I have only been as far as the garage which has plenty wood and brake cables but I cannot see a workable guitar, whilst your needs are clearly assisting you by putting broken guitars in skips

I am struggling with the machine head. (Could have posted that sentence in the 'What Have We Learned in 2020' thread.)

Quite a big ask for a peg to hold the tension in the string without just unwinding. May need to use a bolt with a lock nut.

Les Paul had the same issues.

I have carved out the peg box and started making the pegs from 8mm threaded rod. Drilling a 2mm hole through the steel rod to take the string required care.

Vertical slots to be hacksawn, tab to be soldered in to make a finger-adjustable tuning peg. Collars to be soldered on too. Will ultimately need tightened with a spanner I think.

@iwrats, do those pegs not need to taper?

Euh I hope not. Fiddle pegs taper and that is what allows them to hold when pressed in. I decided the fabrication of conical pegs was beyond me.

My pegs will tighten with the fingers but lock with a spanner and nut on the other end if friction won't do it.

It is the hardest part, no doubt.

Had a major re-think on the neck of the instrument. Had to accept that I'd made a gross error at the outset. Sawed off the old joint and made a new bolted lap joint that will allow the top of the box to resonate freely. I hope. So many subtle wee things to bear in mind.

Can't believe I am alone in this undertaking.

I have built five sides of the cigar box. Fiddlier than anticipated. Will internally brace all the joints tomorrow.

Tempted to go for a slightly domed top. Test piece wetted and warped for an overnight trial.

@IWRATS, I have just upgraded some tuners/ machine heads on a guitar, so have a set of 6 old (unbranded) ones that could be repurposed for your project (if “proper” machine heads aren’t regarded as cheating). Could arrange a dead-drop somewhere (in best spy novel fashion) if any use to you.

    Looks solid

I scrolled down the tweets and mighty kaputnik appeared. He made a valid point about roads being plowed (sic) but pavements being icy

Further down Lizzie Still Yes Rynne says the bollard lane is totally impassable which is not quite right as you can see a bike track right through it. Impassable yes but not totally. In a very pedantic mood tonight it seems. I have been trying to explain Nicola Sturgeon ‘s Hogmanay Covid rules to my 16 year old. I am the baddie.
