Just to highlight to the forum that today, June 21st, might be the last opportunity to object to the removal of all the cycle lanes on Lanark road.

Please take five minutes to write to your Labour and SNP councillors. https://www.writetothem.com/?a=council

All you need to do is tell them you're unhappy with the premature removal of the Lanark road scheme and you want them to support an ETRO the same as the other spaces for people schemes. Add whatever colour you can be bothered with, or none

    Thanks!

Dave - sorry for hijacking this - seems the right place to put it. I am organising a ride on Wednesday 6pm in support of the Lanark Road lanes - Critical mass are putting the word out and Phyllis from Edinburgh Reporter will come and film it and speak to folk.

It's really last minute so sorry about this (I may not even be able to make it) but if you are able please do turn up.

The plan is to meet here:

at 6pm on Wednesday - ride up to Gillespie's Crossroads, turn around and come back. The more the better and the bigger the message - Council meeting is on the 25th and I hope this will be a good message to send to them.

    Also done.

Do I get extra credit for having looked up what an ETRO is ...?

Done. (Although we don't seem to have an SNP councillor and the Labour one has never responded to any email I've ever written :-( so won't be holding my breath on any action)

I emailed Gavin Corbett although I'm not in his ward by a few hundred meters and got a reply from him.
    My actual councillors are
    Cathy Fullerton (SNP)
    Ashley Graczyk (Independent)
    Donald Wilson (Labour)
    Denis Dixon (SNP)

I got an automated type of response from Ashley Graczyk, nothing from Cathy Fullerton or Donald Wilson, and from Denis Dixon "I did vote to continue this scheme and to allow officers to revisit the proposal and modify it where required. Sadly, others did not agree. "

Since I don't live in that area, I emailed the members of the Transport Committee rather than my local councillors. No replies yet.

@Colonies_chris email your councillors too. Most transport members don't seem keen on the removal, broader party likely setting the agenda (making a mockery of the committee system).

Hmm. Turns out that I have two Tory councillors, and the Labour one is Scott Arthur who I believe is not particularly supportive of SfP (or am I mis-remembering?)

@ejstubbs, Councillor Professor Dean, Scott Arthur is both supportive and unsupportive

Oh definitely write to him. he seems convinced that all his constituents oppose SfP.

“he seems convinced that all his constituents oppose SfP.“

    He can’t be THAT stupid(?)

He came to one of the canal PYs.

I was disappointed at his lack of (can’t remember what).

Since then the ‘persona’ I’ve seen via Twitter is best described as confused.

He’s clearly in the wrong party but not willing to start a more appropriate one (THE SA Party).

@fimm Same ward as you - I got a response from Cathy Fullerton and Ashley Gracyzk (pp) so far. Former is going to refer my response to party colleagues on the TEC (clearly did not read the bit about "motion referred to full council") and the latter was from an admin person acknowledging receipt of the email.

    I may follow up today.

If they are on twitter (and you are) then some are quite responsive to tweets, or at least may notice them!

If I have time to fix my puncture on the Helios, I'll try and bring a child along with me. Otherwise I'm going to do my best to make it along on my own.

Looks like a tactical retreat by the coalition:

    https://democracy.edinburgh.gov.uk/documents/b18386/Motions%20and%20Amendments%2024th-Jun-2021%2010.00%20City%20of%20Edinburgh%20Council.pdf?T=9

Replace the first bullet point of section 9 (this was the part from last week’s TEC that scrapped Lanark Road ) of the motion with:
Asks officers to engage with Lanark Road local residents and the Community Council to achieve cycle speed mitigation measures as well as to reconsider parking provision where parking spaces sit outside protected cycle lanes, with a view to mitigating potential conflict and safety concerns as soon as practicable on the ground – and that these measures are reported to Transport and Environment Committee in September.
Asks in addition that consideration should also be given to measures to reduce conflict for all Water of Leith path users and to improve winter travelling conditions in this location. Ask officers to re-examine the Lanark Road scheme and bring a report to Transport and Environment Committee in September with cross-modal counter data to demonstrate usage for a final decision on removal of the temporary scheme or use of an ETRO, while retaining the 30mph speed limit.

I don't like the sound of that! So it's OK for car drivers to drive past on the driving seat side of parked cars at 40 mi/h (as, I noticed, the speed cameras are bagged over, and therefore very obviously not in operation (duh!), sadly giving tacit free rein to some), but not OK for people to cycle past on the other side of parking bays at 20 mi/h, and I doubt that many people would go any faster because, guess what, we would also get quite badly hurt if someone were to open a car door and step out, too, so it's very much in our own interests of self-preservation to be on the lookout and have our fingers on the brakes!

Also noticeable how all the "SLOW" markings have been scorched off the road as part of the re-laning, but oddly not repainted on the new lanes, whereas the cycle lanes have rather unnecessary "SLOW" markings sprinkled rather liberally all over the place, even in the uphill direction. And the current road surface, especially downhill, is in a truly awful state, I'd hope/assume that permanent works would see the cycle lanes completely resurfaced, and the bollards replaced by something more aesthetic like linear planters.

(Great turn-out today, though, and hopefully it will have the right effect!)

It feels very much like a stay of execution, but I suppose what happens next is all about where the court of public opinion goes.

I do find those "slow" signs, right at the top of the hill, hilarious...

You can't gauge how steep that hill is from Google streetview* ;-)

@neddie: I imagine the CEC team that did the final designs were liberal with the SLOW signs knowing that they would be getting the usual complaints about Tour de France cyclists.
