    25 per cent picked Caleb
    15 per cent Cav
I picked Wout, he has not yet shown up for velo games though somehow still on course for a podium?

    97km to go:

A group of 14 is in front: Van de Poel, Van Aert, Mohoric, Pogacar, Alaphilippe, Henao, Poels, Cattaneo, Bernard, Colbrelli, De Bod, Swift, Kuss, Jensen.

This is INSANE! Yesterday, they raced like there was no tomorrow. Well, this is tomorrow, and it’s still mental.

    85km to go:

Thomas, Cavendish and Froome are now over NINE minutes behind the front of the race. Cavendish is surely in danger of missing the time cut, at this rate?

    Boof.

According to the OED, a boof is “a blow that makes a sound like a rapid, brief movement of air.” The onomatopoeic word's first known appearance in the English language, as the OED tells it, is an 1825 reference in the Supplement to the Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Language

The stage is now officially under way. It didn’t exactly start in Cluses, but on a wet country road entirely lacking watchmaking museums.

67km to go: Merlier’s abandonment means that Alpecin-Fenix have lost two people, and their best sprinters, since the end of yesterday’s stage.

54km to go: Quintana, whose race number was rained off his back some time ago, takes off his shirt entirely, and re-dresses in waterproof jacket. Lots of riders are now waring all-black waterproofs, which makes identifying them something of a challenge.

From someone with 50 Tours (as a photographer).

“There were no cheap airfares, or trains to France, nobody in France spoke English, cotter pins kept our cranks on, and nails kept our shoe plates on.

“Nowadays a bike costs more than my mother’s house.

“Riders no longer look graceful or elegant – they look like they have a collapsed deck chair to race on. Personally I don’t like carbon fibre frames and wheels; they’re noisy, fragile and unforgiving for the road surface.

“I may be outdated, but none of the new racing jerseys fit, everyone looks like they are squeezed in like a tube of toothpaste waiting to burst.”

“When there is a crash, everyone’s Lycra (can’t call it clothing) is shredded and no longer decent or wearable. Jerseys never looked like that when we crashed and we always wore under jerseys so the top jersey slid on the other instead of the road grinding through your skin.

“The computer technology with training is great, you can even tell when you rounded a roundabout or turned into a headwind – but hey, I don’t need a computer to tell me that! We never measured how many miles we did, just how many hours, so when we got fitter we just rode further in the same training time.”

Primoz Roglic, Arnaud Demare, Mathiu van der Poel, Tim Merlier Nans Peters and Bryan Coquard are among the more high profile absentees from the start of stage 10 today. A total of 19 riders have withdrawn from the race for one reason or another since the race began, leaving a 157-strong peloton.

Yes, also Caleb taking himself out

All leaves it on for Cav.

Hence Eddy phoning bike exchange to tell them to pedal faster to drop Cav behind broom wagon

    50km to go:

On Eurosport, Rob Hatch has revealed that the news from the finish line is that the wind has picked up. The riders might be facing a headwind for the finish. It’s around now that the riders will be starting to get a little nervy.

The wind did not blow, the rain starts nowish however, the finish was beautiful.

That was a perfectly executed sprint masterclass today.

He just has to get over Mt. Ventoux Twice today. Then it will be Oh-oh Champs Elysee.

I hope to equal Eddy but not beat him as Eddy won many of his stages up hills.

    I know he's a professional road cyclist. But still..."just"...

Just or unjust, this was written 5 years ago. I don’t know if scoring has changed.

Certainly (because of Cav?) the points competition seems to be more prominent/interesting now.

“Also in recent years they have started to give time bonuses on top of mountains for stage wins, so that all stage wins carry bonuses – fair for everyone right? No, its not, bonuses were introduced to give the sprinters and flat land ‘rouleurs’ a head start, some time in yellow.

“If a super climber wins on a mountain and walks away with a 20 second winning margin and minutes on other heavier built riders, then receives a 30 second bonus deducted from his overall as well, what chance does that give to anyone other than a climber?

“Again in recent years they have introduced the ‘super-sprint’ this is an intermediate sprint, or prime. There used to be three a day, to liven up the racing. Good money and a very small time bonus to the winner and small points to the Maillot Vert – the green jersey.”

“The Green Jersey is the second most important jersey (Classification) in the Tour de France. It is given to the rider who finishes the most times near the front in all stages. For example a rider could win a stage by one minute, he would be race leader whilst another rider may win the second place sprint and also win the next day in a bunch sprint, so the most consistent rider gets the Points Jersey.

“Not anymore – the Green Jersey has become the Intermediate Sprints Jersey, (used to be Red) due to the Super-Sprint.

“I would like the intermediate sprints, or the super-sprint to stay but with its own classification jersey, maybe Red.”

You can win the green jersey without winning a stage. Sonny Colbrelli appearing up the top of mountains has been trying that as he has no lulu in his lead out train.

The green jersey is also a team jersey as they do not win it without a team dragging you around, Sagan also had strong lead outs.

120km to go: We get a look at the back of the peloton, where Mark Cavendish is toiling but in a group surrounded by his team-mates. He could struggle to make the time limit today but will hopefully make it.

118km to go: Cavendish’s group is a minute behind the yellow jersey group, which is in turn 4min 39sec behind the leaders. “He’s looking alright,” says my old partnerr in broadcasting Bradley Wiggins, who is following the race for Eurosport on the back of a motorbike. He reckons Mark Cavendish will finish fairly comfortably inside the time limit.

Tony Martin: For anyone who might be joining us late, the German Jumbo-Visma rider abandoned earlier today after being forced off the road and into a ditch. It was his third or fourth bad crash in this race and he suffered cuts to his face, left leg and arm. After receiving medical treatment he finally decided he’d had enough and quit the race. Hopefully he’s been patched up and is enjoying a nice lunch with a few glasses of the local Chateauneuf De Pape. God knows, he’s earned himself a treat.

100km to go: Geraint Thomas continues to make the pace at the front of the yellow jersey group, in a state of affairs that suggests he’s been deemed surplus to requirements by his team this afternoon. Still riding in discomfort, he’ll keep going for as long as he can this afternoon and then drop back.

    Tough game!

51km to go: Julian Alaphilippe averaged 24.9km per hour on the ascent of Ventoux and 68.9km per hour on the descent. His maximum speed on the descent was an eyewatering 99km per hour. Wow.

And then there were 147 ...
This just in! Peter Sagan is out of the race. The Slovakian rider has had a quiet Tour following a bad collision with Caleb Ewan in the sprint finish at the end of stage three. He suffered a knee injury that day which he is reported to have exacerbated by banging the offending joint off his own crossbar yesterday. He has not signed in this morning.

Today’s start. There’s a 10-minute delay because of high winds. They could make for an entertaining day’s racing if the peloton gets caught in crosswinds and starts to smash up. Expect to see everyone busting a gut to be near the front as getting caught in the wrong place if the bunch splits can have disastrous consequences.
