A record 143 candidates are standing in the 17 multi-member wards across the city.

Counting will take place on Friday at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, using counting machines.

I definitely thought that piling all the votes into your first preference candidate and then all of them into your second candidate would be the ideal option but clearly not. Maybe there is an acceptance the electorate won't vote "perfectly" so attempting to encourage a split is the best approach - and Macinnes comes first alphabetically...

    “and Macinnes comes first alphabetically”

There is no doubt that the position on the ballot paper (due to surname) affects things.

Sitting councillors have been ‘replaced’ by a same party newcomer randomly nearer the top due to the first letter of their last name!

This year with more candidates, PLUS the voting by numbers system, makes everything a bit more random!

I hope there will be data on number of people voting for all candidates (and fewer) - I suspect a lot of people will vote for 3 or 4 people (partly) depending on how many seats there are.

Where should I place Bonnie Prince Bob in my countdown to unpopularity?
He doesn't mention cycling much - probably considers it a recreational bourgeois activity!

My forecast ... predicts that the Conservatives will lose more than 200 council seats across Great Britain on polling day (Thursday 5 May). They will suffer net losses of 63 in London, 38 across the rest of England, 83 in Scotland and 22 in Wales.

Labour, meanwhile, will make a net gain of 35 council seats in London but a net loss of 16 across the rest of England. That net loss, however, will be more than compensated for by net gains of 87 and 41 in Scotland and Wales respectively.

IIRC 5 years ago Labour ruled out joining any coalitions with SNP and then within a mater of days formed one in Edinburgh anyway. Time will tell if they will do the same thing again this time.

Assuming all SNP voters will put the two SNP candidates 1 and 2 I don't think it makes much difference which order they are put in relative to other parties. If only one SNP candidate gets elected it's likely to be the one with most 1st preference votes. After the first one is elected then the 2nd one will be left with all their 1st preference votes plus a fractional share of the 2nd preference votes. If the number of voters who put them 2nd increases then so does the value of each fractional share and I think that the two things cancel each other out (but I haven't done the maths to show it).

I suspect that the whole put the other candidate first thing is because they think (or know) that a large number of voters will simply put an X or only number one candidate. Gilmerton's results last time also show that the 2 SNP candidates were elected on round 6 of the counting. If all the first preference votes go to one candidate then there is a risk that the other will be eliminated earlier in the counting. https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/downloads/file/26408/ward-16-liberton-gilmerton-results-2017

The problem is that that assumption is very far from what happens in practice. There is leakage at every stage of redistribution of candidate votes in excess of the quota, and after each candidate elimination. A poor showing on first preferences will, ceteris paribus, lead to an earlier elimination.

Ideal scenario would be multiple candidates well-balanced on first preferences, all slightly short of quota and them making it over the line via transfers from eliminated candidates of other parties.

Hadn't considered this risk - of course it makes sense to spread the vote evenly then!

I still think we should just get over ourselves and allow party lists for these elections.

Encouraging results from down south that Tory attacks on LTNs, cycle lanes and liveable neighbourhoods in places like London and Oxford haven't worked.

Drumbrae has 2 lib dems + 1 SNP.

    Mark Brown (Con) is out.

That’s a shame actually. He was a really hard-working local councillor.

    Agreed.

"LibDems pick up another seat - this one at the expense of well-known Tory councillor Mark Brown. Mr Brown told me “that’s politics” and “sometimes you have to be the fall guy for things happening elsewhere”"

Mark Brown is "Swivel Eyed Broon" on Twitter, isn't he? He always got points from me for the twitter handle...

Yep. That's him. Nice guy to talk to. Seems to get on with everyone - despite differences in politics.

These two wards may be outliers, but there does appear to be some sort of Lib Dem surge going on in the suburbs.

I daresay that will not be good news for active travel improvements...

That's a shame about Mark Brown, who is a cycling Tory, and a likable bloke.

Edinburgh reporter seems to be reporting results at least as quickly as elsewhere:

Worth noting also that Musselburgh has its first Green councillor.
