Save the date! We're bringing POP back to the streets of Edinburgh on Saturday 23rd April. We're still discussing the route and start point with the council but one thing we are aiming for is a slightly later start (1pm) to allow more feeder rides from slightly further away.

    https://pedalonparliament.org/save-the-date-pedal-on-parliament-2022/

As always, there will be need for people to help out with marshalling, flyering and generally spreading the word. I'm having to take a step back from the organising this year but Alexrob of this parish and Chris Russell (not sure if he's on here?) and NiallA will be leading the charge

Needless to say, ‘everyone’ from CCE (past and present) will be there.

More importantly, I’m sure that a lot of CCEers will continue with their shadowy (and VITAL) involvement(s) - planning, flyering, feeder ride organising etc etc.

    MORE IMPORTANTLY

The ‘veterans’ will welcome ANY support, however minor or brief in advance or on the day.

PoP is a remarkable organisation/thing/campaigning asset.

You’d have to be immensely cynical to believe that it hasn’t made a significant difference over the last ten years - particularly with the essential aim of changing SP/SG attitudes and policies.

Without PoP there might not have been the campaigns for things like Roseburn and Lanark Road.

    And finally

MANY people have be involved over the years.

BUT a REALLY key player has been Sally.

We ALL owe her a LOT.

(“There are many places online where the word is spread about POP, but there is one place in particular where we receive a huge amount of help. The members of CityCyclingEdinburgh have been fantastic in helping us, advising us, and generally rallying troops right from POP 1. POP would be nothing without you guys!” https://pedalonparliament.org/pop-4-thank-you/ )

Just a small reminder of how CCE people (helped to) make this happen -

Hope someone is figuring out how to get the best picture of Chambers St full of bikes?

There are some great photographers who come along to PoP, I am certain that there are some of them already thinking about how to get the best angle to show Chambers St full of bikes.

The key thing now is to make sure that we do fill Chambers St with bikes. We need everyone on here to pass the message out through their social media channels to urge people to come to PoP this year.

PoP has achieved a lot over the years, https://pedalonparliament.org/local-elections-time-to-deliver/ we have reversed the spending cuts, we have got the Scottish Government to increase the money available to Local Authorities, now it is time for them to start delivering.

The biggest risk is that active travel falls victim to a Unionist/Indie split, we have to get people asking for cross-party support. And a show of numbers at PoP will show that there are votes in this.

If anyone is planning on organising a feeder ride please let us know on hello@pedalonparliament.org. Also should have posters and flyers to distribute soon

Anyone remember where feeders started in previous years?

Thanks @Boothym - I see that I wrote a lot of the notes for 2018 - although it wasn't the same as loading over 200 bikes in under 5 minutes at Leuchars for the 1978 Edinburgh-St Andrews Ride

From Scotrail, I can relay a hint that they'd appreciate a chat on making things run smoothly for those taking a train to POP or home, and possibly making sure that where possible trains will have the maximum number of coaches

If leverage can be applied, I'd note that the 20 bike 'dogboxes' which at present require 1 unit to make 2 round trips between Glasgow & Oban, and then swap over with another one of the 5, which should be available, are (or were) technically compatible with other diesel units, but I'm not sure if it could be turned around to put one on the Borders route and one on the Fife circle in the time available

For the first event the smart crew caught the newly introduced train going back via Carstairs & Motherwell with a reported 34 cycles on board carefully stowed

With managed loading extra bikes can be accommodated, in defined spaces. The 8-coach fast trains to Glasgow could stow up to 40 bikes per train

Electrics also now running to Dunblane & Alloa, and to Glasgow Central High Level

Think also of the coach and bus services which can get people home, especially if their use is also managed (so boarding the Perrymans/Borders 235/62/95, plus coaches to Fife & Glasgow only at St Andrew Square bus station)

Post thought by way of proving - I wonder how long a crossing Burntisland-Newhaven takes on an available vessel?

For those with strong stomach a fast RIB would take about 10 minutes for that crossing...

We now have printable posters, handlebar flyers and feeder ride flags on the site.

Things are getting close now so any and all help in spreading the word is appreciated!

Anyone thinking of organising a feeder from Victoria Park/5 Ways (again) or similar?

Similarly, is there going to be a Harrison Park feeder ride?

“is there going to be a Harrison Park feeder ride?“

    Wouldn’t be PoP without one…

I'd like to participate, but that much noise and people might be a bit much for me(ASD) - would it be considered rude to just tag along at the back of the ride and then slope off once everyone hits Holyrood?

    DEFINITELY NOT!

Plenty people don’t stay for the speeches…

I recently found a stray blue tabard that someone can use, but can't help plan/organise.

I presume there are enough people that have done this ride to understand the basics - start time, route, keeping ride together, care at junctions.

As previously - all ‘individual responsibility’ (and for any accompanying ‘dependants’).

    So

‘Advertise’ a time here and start a ‘nucleus’.

Haven't we had a police presence in previous years? Even if only to get across the King's Theatre junction?

(Should I start a new thread for the HP feeder ride?)

Hi all. Alex here - know it's been a while since I dropped by, frankly I've been trying to minimise online distractions during the busy last few months. However I'm now into full organisational mode for POP!

There are a few additional things we need help with but the main one right now would be spreading flyers far and wide across edinburgh. Would any of you lovely people be willing to help out with this distribution if I could get flyers to you over the next day or so?

WE have flyers avaiable for collection at most central bike shops but I have some chunks of flyers to get delivered to futher outposts. Main areas we could do with more advertisements are Portabello, South Queensferry, Fife, and outlying midlothian areas.

The other thing I'd emplore you to all do is to reach out to whatever cycling communitee you belong to and ask for people to spread the word. It's not far off now the 23rd and the more people we can get attending the better, so please reach out to anyone you've ridden with in the last decade and tell them to come along!

Thanks! I've rediscovered my password so will be here regularly for the next few weeks at least :)

    Welcome back…

As ever, a few people doing A LOT (mostly behind the scenes).

In case you haven’t read through the thread, some concerns/questions about feeder rides - inc - explicitly - police help.

I'll handlebar flyer bikes in the George Square area next week, but won't be able to to do anything the week after.

Will also share details to Bruntsfield and Boroughmuir parent groups (if allowed).

But with fewer people cycling to work and schools out for easter holidays, it's going to be harder to reach them.

So if you are looking for police help for feeder rides, I suggest getting directly in touch with the police via whatever local community presence they have.

Algo has had some success being a bit more connected with the local constabulary via the bike bus movement, I'll speak to him to see if we can get some more support.

They in general will not really commit officially but often they will have someone there. I will be making sure that if we get some there early on in the day on bikes, I'll ask them to send some people to Kings Theatre junction and also to forest road to support people coming from meadows. We'll also have marshals on that point to help move groups from he meadows to Chambers street (not closed roads but we can "enhance the safety" of the section using some people.

Please drop me a message if you have questions or post here and I'll answer away!

On the subject of the HP Feeder Ride, this is something that I've organised in the past. Unfortunately I don't currently have capacity to organise it this time around, which is why I've been quiet on the topic.

I can offer two 'Bikes Ahead' warning signs and a stack of bamboo canes suitable for pennants to anyone who is planning to organise it.
