Took it very Gingerly on Canal Towpath today - seemed to get worse nearer Edinburgh but by the sounds of @JdanielP’s report also worser at Wester Hailes

Heard of two cyclists who came off on black ice on the towpath in front of Boroughmuir .

@SRD yes that stretch was very clearly bad so I did ca’ canny.

In other news I have again become impatient with the 100s of cyclists who proceed on full beam. I have a knog blinder I put my hand over [mainly thanked by dog walkers for doing this] very occasional return photon reduction. From cyclists I used to pull people up about this in the olden days but now bright lights are so cheap any cat has them.

I shuffle the mainly Mrs Doyle bad word I say to relieve the monotony. Bloody blinder, fecker, ya big bollox, Lumentalist, etc.

I had to contend with yet another work truck being reversed into position by the temporary offices at Leamington Lift Bridge this morning, although the driver did a far better job at getting the truck close to the offices than the last one that I saw so there was a reasonable amount of space to pass it once it was parked.

The fences at the work site where the new school is being built at Wester Hailes are being gradually moved (officially) so that they encroach upon the towpath once again, which was unsettling when I realised this last night since the path now feels narrow.

I met two towpath regulars on the aqueduct this evening. It was rather nice.

Porty Community Energy’s roving exhibition opens on the canal tonight from 5pm, with pancakes! Between Leamington lift bridge and Viewforth bridge I believe.

The canal towpath is currently closed at Harrison Park for a few (I was told three by a passing workie) days while a dangerous tree is removed. Unfortunately, the alternate route uses the steps linking the towpath to Harrison Park East rather than the accessible path just beyond so I dismounted to tackle that bit.

I detoured early on way home tonight to avoid the closure but in fact it wasnt closed. I know it was not @jdanielp hallucinnating like he did with the third swan party as i did have to detour at lunch time going in to town. It was good to be forewarned about this closure. Thanks @jdanielp

Now there's a closure of the towpath between the footbridge to Colinton Dell and the canal bridge just by Kingsknowe Railway Station. There is a surprisingly well signposted diversionary route for 'Pedestrians' which runs mostly along the backroads.

I cycled on the towpath today for the first time since Thursday last week and was surprised to find that several of the broken sections of path in Wester Hailes have been resurfaced, with more to come given that there was also a towpath closure at the Clovenstone Road Bridge. There was no suggested diversion, but it was just a case of using the dropped kerbs to cross at the top of the bridge and then following the pavement to rejoin at the far side of the bridge (I was heading west). I also saw new paint markings on broken parts of the path outside Wester Hailes suggesting that this might be a quite extensive job, at last...

No closure on the way home and more smooth towpath... The single bit that was resurfaced a couple of years ago just over the canal from the random totem pole thing looks old and already somewhat bumpy in comparison to the new bits.

The improvements are continuing with a new smooth section of path by the canal bridge just east of Hermiston House.

@jdanielp how far along the towpath do the pink numbers extend? City Fibre getting to W Hailes without disrupting drivers?

I noticed the towpath being marked up on my commute yesterday. It runs all the way from the basin at the lift bridge end to Meggetland so far. Don't tell me they're going to trench it for something? FFS

@dave I fear so, the pink numbers go over the aqueduct and on to the bridges to the WoL Path, - i suspect staying on towpath to wester Hailes. Just when the surface at Lochrin Basin was half decent

Ah yes, I forgot to mention the two tar ramps at Harrison Park. Ta for mentioning them. I really hope you are wrong about the reason for the pink numbers. I saw the start of them on Tuesday, but it sounds like they have extended...

According to a FB post by Longstone CC, the markings are for "a survey of underground services being carried out by Mackenzie Construction on behalf of Scottish Canals in relation to the towpath widening project."

    There is no more detail.

Hopeful the pink numbers are just what electric cables lie beneath the surface then and wont become an issue unless @JDP’s workies cut them when out on the big pontoon going under the bridge: I wonder if barges or long boats will get through? The rowers and their annoying coaches on bikes going on the wring side do they start after this bridge?

Union Canal Towpath obstructed at Harrison Rd bridge from tomorrow. Initial works Wed-Fri involve surveying, which it is hoped will only close the towpath for short periods. Main works start 30th March, 12:00-20:00 daily. https://www.scottishcanals.co.uk/boating/ongoing-works/edinburgh-harrison-road-temporary-road-restriction-and-traffic-regulation)

A post from Scott Arthur on FB indicates some kind of incident at the Slateford aqueduct, with reports in the comments of a police presence at the builders yard and the rumour that unfortunately someone may have jumped. Will update here if I hear otherwise but would assume it will remain closed for the time being.
