How has he managed to get that portrayed not in a “war on motorist absolute chaos” light?

I assume because the Venn diagram of "people who unironically use War On Motorists rhetoric" and "people who think electric cars are for hippie nancies and who cares if climate change is real a couple of extra days of sun in the summer will be great innit" is a circle.

Congestion charging for cars coming into Edinburgh could be on the cards if commuters shun improved bus links, transport convener Scott Arthur has warned. The city's minority Labour administration aims to increase the capacity of public transport from neighbouring areas over the next three years. And Cllr Arthur said if motorists then still insisted on bringing their car into the city they might have to pay.

    Maybury Drive

Sorry, no. I have said I will work with local Cllrs on this, but funding and land ownership will be challenges.

Some might say not to upload videos of yourself going through a red light but Cllr Arthur disagrees.

As in the number of petition signers totaling 87 being described as massive?

I long for the days where I can talk like Big John on the canal towpath

Today Big John after shaking my hand for more than a minute told me he wanted to live long enough to see the present tory government experience their children committing suicide. He then moved on to dragging them into the street and kicking them to death He then used the Effing C words.

Big John is a working class tory but the value of his stocks and shares has plummeted. His injection of Depo into his Buttocks is also wearing off for the month. Time to get another jag.

As in the unsucessful Labour council candidate in Roseburn campaigned on getting compensation for the traders but there will be an interesting decision to be made at next week's Finance & Resources Committee as to whether to actual pay some (& set a precedent etc).

My sources tell me the elected Labour Councillors aren't keen to cough anything up.

I'm trying to get the bike hire scheme report to TEC before the Feb budget so that parities can consider funding it. Restarting a hire scheme will probably be far more expensive than saving the old one would have been... and we now have more cuts to deal with!

My focus right now is increasing public transport capacity from surrounding local authorities. This is about making it safer, faster and more reliable. By 2025 I hope to have the public transport capacity in place to make a real dent in Edinburgh’s congestion problem. If people from outside the City of Edinburgh Council area prove reluctant to switch to public transport then a congestion charge may help encourage them.

I see Cllr Arthur considers the hard work of actually getting people to use public transport is for someone else:

For all this to work, Scotland needs a joined-up public transport strategy which focuses on keeping bus, tram and rail fares affordable and the services reliable. Let’s hope we see progress on this by 2025.

We don't have 3+ years to wait while some incremental improvements are made, before introducing the stick.

It's all far too slow, far too late...

    Emergency means emergency.

I am planning on knocking loudly on the front door of drivers to ask them to make the switch to sustainable transport

Hopeless. Utterly hopeless. This hasn't worked in 70 years of trying...

Scottish Labour 2022 Local Election Manifesto:

To oppose the Workplace Parking Levy. Scottish Labour will prioritise improvements to public transport so that leaving the car at home is a viable option for everyone. This should be the focus over unfairly penalising working people and those who have no other option but drive.

The row came as the transport convener was caught up in a dispute with the Greens' Claire Miller during a City Chambers meeting on Thursday (November 3) over whether her last-minute motion should be heard by committee

Cllr Miller argued two emergency motions tabled by the Green and SNP groups on the traffic issues on Leith Walk were "competent, relevant and urgent" - a view not shared by the convener, who has the final say on emergency business.

Mr Arthur said: "I'm not convinced that these are urgent, I think these issues pre-existed, they've been known for some time."

He promised to raise the issues regarding nuisance drivers taking 'prohibited turns into junctions' at a council meeting next week.

"That's my ruling on that and what I would say is of course it can come to the next transport and environment committee, or councillors may wish to present the same motions to full council in November."

    ….

The meeting's then resumed for viewers watching online, as Cllr Arthur apologised to committee members for not asking for their permission to pause the live stream.

Opposition councillors reacted furiously on social media afterwards.

Adam McVey, SNP group leader, wrote on Twitter afterwards: "Quite unbelievable scenes at today’s transport committee when Labour shut down public scrutiny of their actions.

"This has literally never happened before in our council. Labour setting a new low for Edinburgh. Arrogant. Undemocratic. Shameful."

I'm grateful for TEC colleagues in the Lib-Dems, Greens and SNP for taking on board some of my concerns into their plans for a Workplace Parking Levy in Edinburgh:

    Braid Road

I have yet to see the detail on this. As a minimum, I'm expecting the plan the SNP/Greens voted through with a temporary crossing added.

Edinburgh will grow significantly over the next ten years. For that happen, however, car use will have to fall.

The city has grown over the last 30 years, as has the number of cars and the total distance driven. I see nothing happening to disrupt this well established trend.

I very much doubt that Scott has used the route alluded to in the tweet. It's a bit arrogant of him to claim that he understands the issues.

@neddie - As you say most people have no idea on the barriers faced if you don't have a car and choose to cycle on normal errands. A section of the 'I'm a cyclist" brigade might just choose a known safe route on a sunny day with a dry path.

@Morningsider - yes, 'follow the money and follow the media' to accurately predict what's likely to happen. Already work has been carried out more urgently to get EV charging in place it seems than bike paths. Media folk are starting to own EVs and they like what they see. Ten years ago they were keen on bikes but don't have many now (Jeremy Vine an outlier maybe - I don't really follow him but know he is all over Twitter).
In Edinburgh we have always had cycling poiiticians, Mark Lazarowicz, Sarah Boyack, Lesley Hinds, Andrew Burns, Lesley Macinnes, Scott Arthur.
Labour led on this for many years as a progressive party. (We know Keir Starmer says he doesn't want more immigration from overseas but I hope Scottish Labour aren't buying that line.(!)

*Cameron Rose - Tory politicians do cycle too of course!
