It was great to speak to the Tram Board members today, & get an update on their work to get ready for the line to Newhaven opening on time and on budget - plan below.

It was good to also hear that Unite's offer to enter talks via ACAS has been accepted - nobody wants a strike.

Tomorrow is a big day - the consultation on expanding Edinburgh's 20mph network should get underway.

Update on Braid Road from his Facebook page. The whole thing is bizarre. He's been telling people that it'll open to traffic both ways on the 20th of November for ages, which I suppose is what council officials have been telling him? Then 5 days before that they announce that the implementation won't start until the 21st of November and it'll take 5 weeks so won't reopen until 23rd of December!

I'm not keen on it reopening so happy with a stay of execution, but it really is a bizarre way to run a council - such a disconnect between councillors and officers.

    “We will install”

    So he’s directly involved?…

Sorry, I wasn’t clear. That’s the email from council officials to him. That said, there had been an awful lot of “I will publish…” from him recently.

I'm ready to extend 20mph speed limit to 90 per cent of Edinburgh roads:

It was "scrapped" by the last administration.

Things need to change. 50,000 homes will be built over next 10 years in Edinburgh, and we are already the most congested city in the UK. More cars isn't the answer.

We also have to contribute to Scot Gov targets on car usage.

Except the 50,000 new homes in Edinburgh figure is clearly nonsense. 20, 901 homes were build in Edinburgh over the last 10 years. We are in recession and there is a cost of living crisis. There is simply no chance of a 150% increase in housebuilding this decade.

Similarly, Edinburgh is not the most congested city in the UK. Data on this is pretty flakey, but the widely quoted INRIX figures don't even put Edinburgh in the top 10 most congested UK cities.

I know this is kind of nitpicking, but I find it worrying that transport decisions are being taken on clearly incorrect information.

“I find it worrying that transport decisions are being taken on clearly incorrect information“

    Indeed

Presume there is a document somewhere with the ‘50k’ projection(?)

And plans/intentions to deal with it - road/PT/AT improvements, new schools, health centres etc???

Edinburgh was number 4 pre pandemic though for INRIX

We had huge falls during the pandemic by virtue of have such remote working friendly employment patterns.

Don't think it's unreasonable to plan for non pandemic patterns in the future

I see the good Councillor has tweeted a photo of Braid Road festooned in signs - the central one being:

    CYCLE
    LANE
    CLOSED

There we have it ladies and gentlemen - 2022 and the transport leader of our city is actually promoting the removal of cycle lanes.

The change is the results of an amendment that only the SNP/Greens voted for.

What is the basis (if any) for his assertion that "a Green amendment supported by the SNP is why Braid Road is reopening"?

    Braid Road

The minutes (here: https://democracy.edinburgh.gov.uk/mgConvert2PDF.aspx?ID=41856 ) record that Cllrs Doran and Child also voted in favour.

    Are the minutes wrong?

Why should I care about the political shenanigans? The fact is the cycle lanes are being removed - on the instructions of people who claim to care about road safety, climate change, reducing car use, access to green space, children's right to play...

@Morningsider: I see the good Councillor has tweeted a photo of Braid Road festooned in signs

Nice of them to close both the northbound and southbound cycle lanes, leaving a single lane one way southbound for all traffic. Meaning that get to Hermitage Drive and beyond while remaining within the law northbound cyclists either have to brave Comiston Road and the lights at Braidburn Terrace, or else walk their bikes on the footway down a steep hill to the Hermitage gate, and up the other side. This is actually significantly greater inconvenience than the road being closed northbound for motorists, since all they have to do is drive a bit further for more or less zero effort. And it's going to be like this until 23rd December (as reported by pringlis upthread).

AIUI the main part of the works involves building the new layout at the Braid Road/Hermitage Drive junction. Having to close both cycle lanes between there and the turn into the Braid Hills Hotel for the full four weeks seems, shall we say, ill-planned at best...

If Edinburgh is serious about 7-7-7 bus lanes, that means looking at loading restrictions too.

Of course I didn't! I did, however, spend an hour or so with @farroutdelivers learning about their zero-emission delivery service made for Edinburgh's needs.

I also had a chat with the @cargobikemovmnt about all they do to help Edinburgh hit net zero!
