Yes, once upon a time you could (conceivably) come in by the South Lodge and wend your merry way around to the main gate, or perhaps trip trap over the Gogar Burn footbridge and pop out by Hatton Mains. I don't think they're in any hurry to re-establish the Long Dalmahoy Road sneaky option.

The 1972 map is still under copyright but the 1971 one also shows the road (and path) and is on the NLS site.

It shows a lot of pubs that are no longer there following the introduction of drink driving Laws too.

Councillor Scott Arthur, Transport and Environment Convener, said: “During this time the cycle lane remains closed – I have been told there is clear signage on the street, and any pavement works are fenced off."

Cllr Arthur added: “The current layout complies with the Edinburgh Street Design Guidance, which recognises that flexibility is required to accommodate a variety of modes in the design of existing streets. The lip between the footway and the cycleway is there to provide clear segregation for visually impaired pedestrians.”

I'm sure they can manage to keep the Leith Walk cycleway closed for another 5 years while they carry out remedial action.

The failed "Quality" Bike Corridor cost £650k and that was a Herculean effort to persuade the council to spend "so much" money on cycling (and it was something like 90% of the cycling budget). Now we see £750k blown "just like that" because guess what? Motors...

“I'm sure they can manage to keep the Leith Walk cycleway closed for another 5 years while they carry out remedial action.“

    Allowing for the intended irony…

I genuinely don’t know if any bits are ‘open’. Leith Street to Calton Road?

I’m confident that ‘closed’ signs are sporadic and I’m unclear about what is “fenced off”.

If this is true - “The current layout complies with the Edinburgh Street Design Guidance“ - then I don’t see much changing in the next 5 years.

Councillor Scott Arthur, Transport and Environment Convener, said: “Any injury resulting from a collision on our roads is one too many.

“We have a responsibility to create safe and welcoming streets for all, and the Road Safety Action Plan is key to achieving this.

“I am keen to work with residents to ensure routes to schools are made safer, traffic short-cutting through residential communities is reduced and physical measures are introduced to cut speeds.”

He continued: “Thankfully, over the last decade, the number of collisions resulting in injury has continued to fall – but there is clearly much more to be done.

“The plan sets out a series of targets to significantly reduce the number further and, ultimately, attain Vision Zero for Edinburgh.”

"Cllr Arthur added: “The current layout complies with the Edinburgh Street Design Guidance...""

Load of crap (as usual). Even a cursory examination of ESDG (clearly beyond Brave Sir Arthur or his officials) turns up:

Section C4 - Kerbs and Other Separation Options

"The kerb facing the cycle track should be a Splay /
Battered kerb (45 degree face) as this presents less of
a danger to cyclists of catching their pedals, allowing
them to utilise the full width of the cycle track. This is
particularly relevant where the track installed is at the
    minimum desirable width."

Section C4 - Cycle Track Cross Section Options

These diagrams suggest 25 to 50mm level
difference between footway and cycle track is the minimum permissible

Visually, neither of these appear to have been complied with on the section where the unfortunate cyclist came off.

And of course that disregards all the other manifest high level design flaws.

Waah - can he not just commit to delivering something of tangible benefit to the city? Not something committed to by a previous administration (tram, CCWEL, Roseburn-Canal etc) but an actual physical improvement.

    Anything but another plan.

It doesn't need to be "iconic" or "world-class" - in fact, I would argue it shouldn't be. Narrow pavements need widening, pedestrians need more bench seating, bus shelters that actually keep out the weather would be nice, kerbs need dropping and on and on.

There was a plan (TWELVE years ago)

Leading urban planners Gehl Architects have warned Edinburgh council chiefs that drastic action is needed to transform the fortunes of Princes Street, after labelling the city centre shopping hub ‘a big bus station’

    https://www.architectsjournal.co.uk/archive/gehl-edinburghs-princes-street-is-big-bus-station

IN FACT there have been LOTS of plans…

    And 15 years ago

Council officials have spent three years promoting the idea of Princes Street being revived by a "String of Pearls", encouraging development of different sections. However, an independent report found the project was "not audacious enough" and revealed widespread concern in the property industry about a lack of progress.

Of course there are two (and more) issues with Princes Street - the street (particularly pedestrian space and PT service) and buildings and businesses.

Of course the latter hasn’t been helped by the initial St James Centre AND its rebuilding.

How much CEC could/should have dealt with some of this through the planning process is questionable.

The issue of the buildings is complicated by complex ownership including pension funds and obscure ‘offshore’ companies.

In reality there are limits to what CEC/SA could do - even if it had significant funds…

The number of bus routes/buses and quality of shelters ought to be something CEC and SA’s T&E Committee could do something about.

    But

    Decades later…

Were the bus shelters not sold for a mess of potage to Adshel (now Clear Communications) by a previous administration with the net result that the council has no say in what a bus shelter now looks like and they will inevitably prioritise advertising, not shelter?

Some sort of deal but presumably(???) not a ‘forever’ deal.

‘Most’ shelters these days seem to open on at least one side.

The amount of shelter depends on which way the wind/rain is coming.

    Lots of possibilities -

Though most seem to be designed to impress designers…

The SNP in Edinburgh appear to have forgotten that Labour offered to work with all parties to take our Capital forward.

One day I really would like to meet one of these accessibility advocates in person and ask A; what they're proposing instead of bus stop bypasses that isn't "we're more important than you, mix with general traffic, good luck" and B; why the countless other examples of bus > bus stop island > road/tram track > pavement you actually want to walk on are fine, but cycle paths specifically are an intolerable danger.

Like I agree the "bus stop boarder" things where passengers are expected to debark right into a narrow strip/cycle track/shared space are garbage and should never be used even where there are space constraints(if the stop can't reasonably be moved to accommodate a bypass, there should be a signalised gate on the cycle track that's green by default but can be turned red by an approaching bus - not great, but safer than the alternatives), but either these advocates see no difference between those and a proper bypass design or they're deliberately conflating the two.

There's a hierarchy of issues here - at the top is blocking a pedestrian crossing right outside a school.

My bus was delayed today due to congestion and also this kind of behaviour. We need to reduce car use and improve enforcement, but I fear numpties will still be numpties.

    POLITE NOTICE:

We will be stepping up bus lane enforcement on key routes into the city centre.

We are talking to Lothian Buses about placing Parking Attendants on buses.

Remember to thank your bus driver.

Lorra lorra school kids, well behaved downstairs, very rowdy upstairs

Passenger lost his shizzle with the driver about the rowdy ones as he alighted

Driver had Xmas jumper on, remained impassive.

That is a genuinely good idea!

    Is it an SA one!?

    How could LB object?

    BUT

Is it possible - no ‘grace’ period?

    Best seat on the bus.

We need to align loading restrictions with bus lane operating times. There will be progress on this next year... I hope.
