Funny that. signs plus Les Gendarmes equals Compliance

Minus Les gendarmes. Equals non compliance.

Councillor Scott Arthur, Transport and Environment Convener, said: “The changes to the road layout at the London Road junction are designed to improve public transport efficiency and protect pedestrians. These improvements are clearly signed, with seven signs in place on approach. Anyone contravening the rules is breaking the law, as well as endangering the safety of themselves and other road users. Ignoring the ban on left hand turns is extremely selfish, and I would urge drivers to take heed of the changes and follow alternative routes.

“I visited the junction on Sunday to observe driver behaviour, and yesterday the Police, the Council and the Trams to Newhaven team considered the issue. They continue to monitor the situation on an ongoing basis and are in the process of installing changes to the junction to make breaking the ban harder. They will also optimise the operation of the traffic lights at Picardy Place so that the time to get around the junction and turn right into London Road is as efficient as possible. We will continue dialogue with Police Scotland.”

    I've asked for an update.

Must be hard to come to terms with limits to abilities/powers when you spend so much time spinning in public.

This was traffic queuing up to get into the St James Quarter on Sunday. I know it's Christmas, but we have to fix this if buses are to come off George Street.

Would have been easier to fix if the council hadn’t approved a 1600 space car park there in the first place!

    Talking of which…

I made these arguments in the past, but the agreement has now been struck: https://drscottarthur.scot/2017/12/02/the-picardy-place-predicament-place-movement-or-both

Notwithstanding the GAM, I am not sure CEC could force the closure of the car park.

Ah, a case of Schrodinger's Convener, who exists in two possible states:

    1. every decision is his to take.
    2. every decision has been taken by someone else.

It appears that of you ask him a question then everything becomes "2", that is - someone else's fault.

    As above

The contractor is busy elsewhere, but I understand they will be installed ASAP.

Of course an additional part of the problem is that CEC doesn’t seem to have the staff to do stuff.

I think SA should borrow a police uniform and stand there until the “contractor” turns up.

Here is the good news -

I am humbled to have been nominated by my Party to be Edinburgh's next TEC Convener. This will only be an interim position (if successful), however, until a more able colleague completes her transition to being a Councillor (and Committees are restructured).

You mean none of this happened either?

If elected tomorrow, my short period in office will be focused on listening to residents and understanding what support staff need to get our city back on track to being the best city in the world!

At least he never gives up …

For the record, I am still trying to get to the bottom of when and where this decision was made by the last administration. I should have an update early next month.

The last Council administration tried to please everyone by endlessly compromising, and ended up making nobody happy. Pedestrians, disabled people, cyclists, car owners, public transport providers and businesses have all raised concerns with me.

    https://drscottarthur.scot/2022/12/23/edinburghs-circulation-plan-will-help-tackle-its-congestion-crisis/

So he has a magic formula that will keep everyone happy?

As to the “last Council administration” only he chooses to forget he was part of it…

Sorry, this is from 2 days ago -

The circulation plan is about the systematic reallocation of road space to sustainable transport modes. I'm also keen, however, to use it to:

    1. look at how goods and services move around the city.

    2. Plan for / encourage 30% traffic reduction city-wide.

These are both issues I inherited from the last administration. Nonetheless, I don’t think Canaan Lane can solve congestion in Morningside.

Today marks one month until I publish Edinburgh's draft Active Travel Action Plan.

I expect this to be the biggest and boldest in Scotland, and will transform many communities.

This won't just be about "Grands Projets", we will also do things like drop thousands of kerbs!

    There’s the grandiose “I” again.

    “There’s the grandiose “I” again.“

Additionally it’s as though, somehow, he has enough control over enough things that can overtake/overrule existing CEC priorities and plans (not just transport related ones) and seamlessly incorporate the wishes and objections of all “stakeholders’ within a timescale where nothing is derailed by ‘events’ or even opportunities.

Footpath and road condition in Edinburgh is woefully underfunded. We hope to make progress on this in the Feb budget, but it's not easy with the cuts we face.

    https://mobile.twitter.com/cllrscottarthur/status/1607725562558128128?

Of course if they fixed the pavements properly and neglected the roads more, ‘everyone’ would cycle on the pavement - so better not then…

    OLD NEWS

Edinburgh council: Interim transport convener Scott Arthur of Labour vows to deliver where previous administration failed

Newly appointed transport and environment convener Scott Arthur has said that he will strive to deliver in the role where the previous administration failed – despite saying he will only be in the position until someone “more able” takes over.

By Neil Johnstone 27th May 2022

On his social media, the new transport convener explained that it will be an “interim position” and that he will stand down when “a more able colleague completes her transition to being a councillor”. He didn't say who the councillor will be but it is believed it will be retired librarian Val Walker.

Let there be light - The Water of Leith Walkway in my Ward now has lights connecting West Mill Road to Spylaw Street!

It's now a safer and faster route to Colinton Village, and better than driving!

In less than a month we will introduce trial measures to reduce the traffic cutting through Corstorphine.

The public realm/placemaking and traffic movement changes will be completed by the 24th of Feb, and the footway widening and drainage works will follow in the spring.

Hardly. This is a residential area, and people will still be able to access their homes via car and deliveries etc can still be made.

Corstorphine: good that he is defending the plan. Not sure Twitter is the optimum place, especially when his antics discourage much support from - possible - ‘natural allies’.

I would be intrigued to know what Cllr Arthur gets out of using twitter. I'm increasingly of the opinion that he simply likes the attention - regardless of what anyone actually says.

I don’t get Twitter at all but for politicians the platform does fill the void of knowing someone is listening to them out with the political bubble.

Within the wider City of Embra bubble some time is spent worrying about what the Tory propaganda vehicle the EEN will be spinning. however, I don’t know anyone now who buys the EEN?

Some councillors keep busy supporting the various issues of their constituents. Quite likeLy that few of the people they help ever vote for them?

It is a funny old world.

Sometimes it seems to be about grievance and petty politicking -

The SNP/Green Gov have confirmed they've "no plans to extend the statutory free bus schemes to include light rail [trams]" in Edinburgh.

This short-sighted move may mark the end of free tram travel for U22s in Edinburgh, & make it harder to hit our climate change targets.

    1/

This is the same SA who expects SG to cough up for future tram lines.

Not including trams does seem supremely odd. Creates perverse demand for parallel bus routes, which is just inefficient.
