I thought they already had one of those? And I'm sure I read just the other week about a council which was taking JCB to court because their pothole buster was an abject failure.

I'll freely admit that some of the roads do seem to be in a shocking state at the moment, though. And now that Edinburgh's annual post-Christmas Roadworks Festival is kicking off, I doubt they're going to get any better quickly...

    @ejstubbs:

There was a lot of fuss made in the last administration about getting a “Road Mole” (I’m not clear if this is the same thing or not).

At the time, Lesley Macinnes said that it was untried and that officers were unconvinced of its effectiveness. They eventually caved in to pressure from the Tories and agreed to a trial, but I don’t think it ever made it up here.

I bet, like most heavily-marketed whizz-bang technological solutions, it will turn out to be an expensive mistake and won’t achieve anything like its claims.

Is this the council case you are referring to?

    https://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/news/stoke-on-trent-news/it-doesnt-fill-hole-council-7339738

Councillor David Williams, cabinet member for highways and transport, told a meeting: “There has been lots of promotion regarding the Pothole Pro being a one-stop shop. It does a job, as in it will take the surface off, cut the edges, and sweep it up.

“That’s all it does – it doesn’t fill the hole afterwards. And the quality of sides and cutting that we require for our repairs it doesn’t do; that still has to be done.

“It doesn’t do the job it seemed to claim to do – the one-stop shop – because it basically cuts, sweeps and leaves it. That’s all it can do.

“It is expensive, it’s £180,000 for the basic model. It can travel at up to 30kmph but I definitely wouldn’t want to be going round a corner in it at 30kmph because of how high it is.

“It’s got some positives, it’s got some negatives. We are now evaluating what we would use it for in the future, if we were going to use it, and whether we would purchase or utilise it as a rental.

“I will only allow us to start getting any pieces of equipment if they’re going to be useful to our arsenal, to make sure that we can do the best job as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

I object to them filling potholes on my street, because it just allows drivers to go faster

@Stickman: Yup, that's the one. Thanks for running it to earth.

It's the same piece of equipment that our council is planning to trial. Has anyone told them that it only does half the job?

Well at least in theory, it's the more difficult and time consuming half. It's hard to take the marketing guff from the company seriously of course, but one or two other councils seem to quite like theirs?

Anyway, I hope they have sufficient budgeting for its maintenance, given the state of the roads it'll have to be running 24/7 for a couple of years to make any actual difference.

We've taken the Scot Gov's commitment to invest in active travel at face value, and next week will publish one of Europe's biggest and boldest plans.

At the heart of it will be connecting pedestrians to Edinburgh's fantastic public transport network.

Walking to a bus is active? (or am I misinterpreting) If so walking to a car often parked a half mile away is also a type of active travel too?

I'd rather not hear statements that include 'Europe's biggest and boldest' or any world beating pronouncements. We just need day on day improvements.
One thing he has actioned though is backing up the 'paint is not protection' message. Some paths (and roads) now have completely faded white lines as not been renewed for years. Amused when other cyclists get annoyed on shared paths where the markings are but a folk memory.

Again teeing up the Scottish Government as the fall guy for when nothing much happens. He can simply claim he shouldn't have taken the their "commitment to invest in active travel at face value".

As part of the Public Transport Action Plan, I will give a commitment to investigate reopening the Edinburgh South Suburban Railway.

Details will be published on Friday.

I’m afraid I have to say ‘big deal’, ANOTHER investigation!

    More of them here -

Don’t know why they need another investigation as it’s a complete non-starter? It’s just being used as an excuse not to inconvenience motorists and remove parking instead of putting trams on streets, which is where they should be.

I hope to be able to share news on the Roseburn to Union Canal Link - a new shared pedestrian and cycle path including new bridge crossings.

It is designed to deliver a high-quality walking and cycling route as well as improve connectivity.

There are issues with land ownership which are tbc, but works needs to start before bird nesting season starts.

Seven years after the launch of the first consultation. I hope the Council aren't having to pay some penalty to the contractor for delaying the start of work due to incompetence.

    Drum Brae North

It has a long history. I'd have to check the minutes, but I'm certain all parties have supported removal at some point.

I'm still waiting to discuss it with Officers:

Confirmed - The public transport action plan which I will publish on Friday will consider a ferry link from Leith to Kirkcaldy.

Don't worry, I am doing the active travel plan too. It's way bigger than the ferry proposal. You won't believe the scale of the plan.

    Yes….

If all goes well, tomorrow we will make a substantial bid for Transport Scotland's "Active Travel Transformation Fund 2023/24".

If successful, this will amplify and accelerate the delivery of Edinburgh's £118M Active Travel Investment Programme.

I have never heard of the "Active Travel Transformation Fund 2023/24". Not saying it isn't a thing. It could be one of the outcomes of the "Active Travel Transformation Project" which was sort of announced in Transport Scotland's draft Cycling Framework and Delivery Plan for Active Travel in Scotland 2022-2030, published last September.

Could be that SA has accidentally announced something that the Minister was going to announce, which is actually pretty funny.

    @Frenchy - interesting:

100% construction funding support now being sought via Scottish Government Active Travel Transformation Fund 2023/24.
Getting rid of match funding requirements would be a very good things. Disappointing that funding still requires "bids" mind.
