Edinburgh City Council's transport convener Scott Arthur told BBC Scotland he was "embarrassed" by the criticisms the council received from the disabled community in Edinburgh.

Councillor Arthur said: "I think their criticism was that quite often, some of our active travel designs were making people feel isolated and marginalised, so as Edinburgh's new transport convener I'm absolutely trying to address that."

He admitted that he "doesn't really know anybody in Edinburgh who's happy with the design that we see unfolding just now", adding that the work on Leith Walk was still "incomplete".

Mr Scott added: "Going forward, we will make good these defects and there will be a demarcation between the footpath and the cycle way. But if there's issues, once the project is completed, we will absolutely address them."

Will be interesting to see how this develops…

    More plans. More strategies.

The Meadows-Canal link is now slated for delivery in 2025. If a single redesign of a junction is going to take over 10 years then what hope is there for all the other grandly titled projects ever coming to fruition?

The Roseburn CCWEL stretch was subject to interminable delays caused mainly by the actions of one person. What’s going to happen to the consultations on the city centre plans when the Charlotte Square fund managers and Heriot Row QCs wade in?

We might get a few more dropped kerbs and some painted lines, but it’s fantasy that the grand transformation will ever happen

It's taken 8 moths, but finally somebody has said I should stay on as Transport & Environment Convener:

    https://mobile.twitter.com/cllrscottarthur/status/1620767722325049344

He went on to say that he would only fill the position until “a more able colleague completes her transition to being a councillor”. So, as he is still in position, one can only assume that there is no one else in the Labour group “more able” than him. But, if, after nine months, “she,” whoever “she” is, has still not made the “transition” to being a councillor, it begs the question of whether she would ever be able to take on the convenor role.

    Really?

Technically a Cllr's place of work is their home, so Cllrs can claim travel to go to the City Chambers etc. I think in the last administration some even claimed taxis!

I love the notion of being and anti-car car owner. Next I aim to be a meat eating vegetarian.

Choice now for Cllrs and staff??

I only say this because I am of the view that Councillor Arthur has taken to his new role like the proverbial duck to water. Monday’s paper reported, under the heading, “Transport plans ‘will make Capital one of Europe’s leading cities’” and Councillor Arthur was quoted as saying that the active travel and public transport action plans were a “gamechanger” for the city.

As Herald editor the late Arnold Kemp once said 'confusion to my enemies'.
    (No real comparison of course)

I think so - I think it's related to them not actually being council employees.

Makes sense, but slightly odd as that’s where their offices tend to be.

Set your alarm clocks - I'll be on @BBCRadioScot tomorrow at around 7:40am to talk about Edinburgh's (planned) congestion busting sustainable transport transformation.

    Should also be available afterwards.

Seems to think money available (inc £1bn for active travel) as ‘Jenny Gilruth has ringfenced it’.

Stephen Jardine at 9 with a phone-in including ‘what would get you out of your car’.

Easy to agree with the first paragraph.

I'm in awe of all the energy Council staff have put into the plans approved for consultation today.

The plans fully integrate the state-of-the-art in sustainable transport with Edinburgh's unique history, character & needs.

    Onwards & upwards!

Assuming all the funding miraculously appears, how will SA and all other politicians cope with cuts in all areas except walking/cycling/PT?

Or perhaps cope with public/voter belief that there is only one area of CEC spending not only ‘protected’ but significantly increasing?

    New mantra (until?)

Funding will come directly from the Scottish Government for this.

Think he means design of ‘cycle lanes’ on Leith Walk. Probably literally true, but whether all future schemes will be of ‘good quality’ remains to be seen…

On Leith Walk Councillors tried to keep everyone happy and ended up pleasing nobody.

    https://mobile.twitter.com/CllrScottArthur/status/1622306680305340425

I don’t think that’s remotely the reason for the design/execution of LW.

Partly the arms-length nature of the whole tram project, made worse by those ‘responsible’ being unwilling to listen.

The difference between CCWEL and Leith Walk is that carriageway space has been used for the cycle tracks on the former, whereas on Leith Walk the five lane carriageway and pavement have basically been kept the same. You can compare it to 2019 on Street View by using old lamp posts: https://goo.gl/maps/mWESRRaeuwCvUPxU6

Useful bit of LW to highlight as it shows the incomprehensible cycle infrastructure’ AND how much is at the expense of pedestrians.

    P.s.

Fascinating that there is someone sitting opposite the supermarket door in 2022, 2019 & 2018 StreetView shots!

This is about removal of wands between George Street and Meadows which was done (allegedly) to speed up ‘proper’ infrastructure.

Spokes were told that you couldn't legally extend the ETRO there without delaying the TRO for the (permanent) Meadows-George Square scheme.

    Was that wrong?

    Forrest Road (continuing)

I am distancing myself as there's been a clear reduction in safety, particularly on Forrest Rd. I'd have thought that was clear.
