SfP was a Scot Gov choice - it was the implementation in Edinburgh that was the issue.

    https://mobile.twitter.com/cllrscottarthur/status/1623958005455769602

    Right

Presume he thinks that’s a dig at ‘the previous administration’

Of course it’s more a criticism of ‘his’ ‘hard working council staff’.

Manchester could be Edinburgh here, so Edinburgh Labour will work with people like Alisha to help shape our plans for key projects like the George Street restoration.

"Good article about life in the much overlooked Waverley Market by @avalanche_edin.

Princess St is in transition, with much of the empty properties now taken. As well as shops, we'll see more leisure activity.

We'll publish an improvement plan soon."

    https://twitter.com/CllrScottArthur/status/1624313990225461248

The article states that "Active travel is less important than Princes Street" (in other words that Edinburgh Council should be paying more attention to Princes Street than active travel as I understand it...), in which the author complains that Edinburgh is far less welcoming than Glasgow for shoppers.

    Umm.

    Ah yes, standard CEC/SA

    Will it mention this -

    ‘String of Pearls’

The City of Edinburgh Council with Broadway Malyan*, produced a Development Framework for the regeneration of the area between Princes Street and Rose Street Lane North stretching from Calton Hill to Haymarket.

The purpose of this framework document is to set out development principles to guide and co-ordinate development and investment in the centre.

The document lists three development priciples: To reconcile the needs of the historic environment with the requirements of contemporary users; optimise the site’s potential through a retail-led mixed use development and create a high quality built environment and public realm. Aug 2007

    https://www.edinburgharchitecture.co.uk/princes-st-edinburgh

    Or this -

    https://www.bdonline.co.uk/jan-gehl-tells-edinburgh-to-ditch-its-buses/5009997.article

    Or even this -

    https://www.edinburghlive.co.uk/news/history/abandoned-edinburgh-plan-demolish-princes-22973898.amp

Whatever the problems and opportunities of Princes Street, this idea that any ‘plan’ can bring together the various interests of owners (maybe including your pension fund), retailers, hotels, Lothian Buses/Edinburgh Transport and second guess Climate Change, Capitalism, TouristDestinationism - never mind ‘local opinion’ - and provide a ‘solution’ with next to no money is being optimistic/delusional.

CEC (currently) has its eye on George Street where the actual problems are more definable, but the solutions are not without controversy…

    * https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/downloads/file/24215/city-centre-princes-st-development-framework

    From above -

    1.1.3 Governance and Management Structure

Edinburgh City Centre Management Company (ECCMCo) generated considerable debate in 2001 when it suggested that parts of Princes Street should be considered for redevelopment as many of the buildings were not of a sufficient quality, architecturally or functionally, for the centre of a World Heritage Site or a regional shopping centre. Independently, the Cockburn Association in partnership with Malcolm Fraser Architects and McGregor Chartered Surveyors produced proposals that furthered the debate.

The City Centre Princes Street Development Framework (CCPSDF) has been prepared by Broadway Malyan on behalf of the Council. Broadway Malyan’s team of architects, masterplanners and planners have worked closely with the Council and, initially the Edinburgh City Centre Management Company (ECCMCo), to produce the framework’.

The CCPSDF focuses on the regeneration of the area between Princes Street and Rose Street Lane North within the context of the wider city centre. A successful city centre, and in particular a successful Princes Street, is essential if Edinburgh is to maintain its position as the principal focus of activities which are integral to its role and function as a capital city, a regional service centre and major tourist destination.

Princes Street is an iconic and unique single-sided street, around a mile in length, lying at the heart of the World Heritage Site in Edinburgh. It benefits from outstanding views towards the Old Town and Edinburgh Castle and is a major thoroughfare attracting shoppers and tourists alike. It combines a unique blend of mixed activities and uses; it is an international tourist attraction, a series of retail shopping centres, a cultural centre and a location for numerous festivals and events throughout the year.

Wot SA thinks happens if you report pavement parking -

We all like to vent on Twitter, but reporting it will get the culprit fined... and may stop re-offending

    https://mobile.twitter.com/CllrScottArthur/status/1624676466007875587

    Maybe he’s right(?)

Report the problems you see, and Wardens will react.

    Useful word “react”.

You do have wonder about his political sense -

Labour wants Edinburgh to be the first and toughest Scotland.

Fixing Edinburgh's roads is a priority, but impossible without funds. Another £70m of cuts is in the pipeline.

    https://mobile.twitter.com/cllrscottarthur/status/1624834470934110212

It’s answers like this that will make it harder for ‘cyclists’.

‘They get millions spent on cycle lanes which cause congestion AND they never use them’…

Transport convener Scott Arthur said during a City Chambers meeting this week a north-south route, estimated to cost £1.2 billion, is "at the absolute heart of everything we're doing in the transport domain right now".

He added its importance is "reflected" in the Scottish Government's plans.

Just think, they could have spent a billion renovating RIE at Quartermile and there wouldn't even be a need to a put a tram line out to Little France!

(And before anyone says the site wasn't suitable, there's absolutely no reason we couldn't have a modern hospital like the steel-and-glass that's at Q/M today)

    20-minute neighbourhoods, not big-ticket grandiose mega-projects!

“And before anyone says the site wasn't suitable, there's absolutely no reason we couldn't have a modern hospital like the steel-and-glass that's at Q/M today“

    Depends

The plan in the 70s was to expand the hospital most of the way to Brougham Place + the housing block on the other side of Lauriston Place.

Don’t know how much of the extra area was (partly) needed to actually allow rebuilding while still having a functioning hospital.

Part of the reason for the new location was that it was the time when things were being looked at on a more regional basis -

Lothian Health Board was made responsible for Midlothian, East Lothian and West Lothian. Today, known now as Lothian NHS Board, it is housed in the old building of Deaconess Hospital in the Pleasance

    https://www.lhsa.lib.ed.ac.uk/collections/LHB37/lhb37_tlfa.htm

Additionally there were strong campaigns against “comprehensive development” in central Edinburgh - basically more roads, less housing.

Not saying that the decision to move was ‘correct’ or that Little France is any sort of optimum.

Certainly the transport planning was inadequate, myopic in regard to parking in nearby housing areas.

Plus years before it was removed from Old Dalkeith Road - and improvements to cycle access from Craigmillar made.

No idea if a tram line will happen - or make much difference.

More could be done with bus priority, park and ride etc.

    But…

Well he’s gone a bit quieter (and moved to commenting on the SNP a bit more…), but then so has Twitter and CCE.

I'm not telling people anything, but don't you think more people using public transport would be a good thing?
