@Frenchy - thanks. I was confused by Cllr Arthur's claim that "...we have just published...". Made me think there was something new.

Transport and environment convener Scott Arthur said: “Bus lane fine levels are too high in terms of the number which have been issued, so the fine level isn’t a proper deterrent for people who are driving in bus lanes. This has a real impact on our delivery of public transport and when I speak to the bus and tram company they’re always telling me the council has to do more to allow their services to get around the city.
“So we’re going to increase the bus lane fine from £60 to £100. This is about increasing the deterrent factor – so I hope we won’t raise more income because we hope it will be more of a deterrent for people.”
The fine for driving in a bus lane has remained the same, at £60, since the council began enforcing bus lane restrictions in 2012.

The Council is the process of rolling out a new travel tracker system, which will allow it to display real-time departure information for multiple transport operators, including Edinburgh Trams, linking to information in neighbouring authorities and using more readable, full colour screens.
To date, 190 out of 330 on-street signs have been replaced.
Since the beginning of the roll out the Council has been working closely with Lothian Buses, and will continue to do so as they introduce their new real time system.
In the meantime, the screens will display their scheduled times only, but you check real time information using the Transport for Edinburgh app.
Other operators’ information will continue to display on the screens in real time.
I'm sorry for the inconvenience this is causing the travelling public (inc me!), but look forward to the benefits it will bring once the full rollout is complete next year.

The issue goes back to the initial specification, it's not really due to poor rollout.

There's been no lack of disclosure. I have been answering questions about via email and at meetings, and today was the first media inquiry.

I didn't spot it except by chance, but they are proposing to remove Spaces for People around Silverknowes, leaving just the segregation on Silverknowes rd north at "absolute minimum width"
Posted 1 year ago # -
Silverknowes Road North
4.10 Silverknowes Road North currently comprises of a two-way segregated cycle lane and a two-way bus-only lane with passing places. These both run the full length of Silverknowes Road North, between Marine Drive and the Silverknowes Parkway roundabout. There are four bus passing places, where the cycle lane is narrowed.
4.11 Officers have determined that if the segregated cycle lanes were reduced to minimum acceptable widths this would provide enough additional space to establish two continuous carriageway lanes, which would allow for the bus gate to be removed and access returned to non-bus traffic.
4.12 It is proposed to develop designs for a bi-directional cycleway alongside a two-way carriageway for general traffic along Silverknowes Road North, for implementation in early 2024.
From November's TEC agenda

Silverknowes Road South
4.13 Silverknowes Road South currently comprises two lanes open to all traffic and a section of two-way segregated cycle lane on the east side of the street, between the junction with Silverknowes Court and the point at which the road forks into Silverknowes Road South and Silverknowes Road East. Here the segregated route crosses to the west side of the road, where users can connect with the NCN1 cycle route.
4.14 The connection between the segregated cycle lanes on Silverknowes Road North and Silverknowes Road South is via a marked ‘quiet route’ along Silverknowes Court and Silverknowes Place, plus a short section of segregated cycle lane on Silverknowes Parkway.
4.15 The Silverknowes Road South section has been criticised as being indirect, and therefore not an attractive route or one with significant usage. The route could be made more direct by removing the aforementioned ‘quiet route’ section and instead extending the segregated cycle lane along the full length of Silverknowes Road South, to the Silverknowes Parkway roundabout, where it could then connect with the segregated cycle lane on Silverknowes Road North. This would, however, require parking restrictions to be extended along the full length of Silverknowes Road South to achieve the necessary widths for the segregated cycle lane.
4.16 It is proposed to develop designs for a cycle lane and parking restrictions on Silverknowes Road south, alongside removal of the current ‘quiet route’ on Silverknowes Court and Silverknowes Place, for implementation in early 2024

More positively, they are also suggesting this:

And from Risk / community Impact statement:
9.2 The key risks associated with the recommendations in this report are:
9.2.1 Increased traffic on Silverknowes Road North, and potentially some adjacent routes, following re-opening of the road to general traffic. There are no available mitigations to this risk.
9.2.2 Risks associated with removal of current ‘quiet route’ cycleway alignment parallel to Silverknowes Road South, which provides a safe connection by bike for any ability. The proposed replacement on Silverknowes Road South will require users to navigate a busy roundabout with associated increase in perceived and actual risks to people cycling. This could result in fewer people choosing to cycle for local journeys, especially those people who are less confident or less experienced cyclists.
9.3 The Council’s City Mobility Plan includes a target of a 30% reduction in car use. The recommendations in this report include re-opening a road to general traffic which could encourage additional car use.
So they are knowingly dumping children and other less confident cyclists out on to a busy
roundaboutmeat grinder. And knowingly going against their own 30% car reduction target.FFS, you couldn't make it up

@Frenchy
It doesn't really matter what they do to SK Road South if they're going to dump cyclists on to a busy roundabout! Families simply won't use it
Posted 1 year ago # -
It also gets my goat that they won't improve (surface) the path from Silverknowes Road South and Cramond Road South - reason given that they'd either have to buy land off of Tesco's or persuade Tesco's to instate a path which they are not interested in (when asked 13 years ago!)
Talk about tail wagging the dog. If the council surfaced the path now, there would be far greater incentive to complete the connection through Tesco's, even if at a later date...
And all of this stems from shit planning - which is the council's responsibility, and therefore the council's responsibility to put right (otherwise how will anything ever change in the planning dept. if they don't see their own mistakes?)
Posted 1 year ago # -
I hope Spokes will put in a deputation on this.
(I would, but don't have the energy after fighting for other tiny scraps in the city)
Posted 1 year ago # -
And knowingly going against their own 30% car reduction target.
I will believe it when I see it. LAs seem to be very good at being upfront and bullish with targets, but the bullishness is invariably couched in terms of not being complacent about how difficult it will be to seek to redouble efforts to change behaviours by some suitably faraway date in the future by which time, for all practical purposes, it will be someone else's problem.
I get the impression that CEC actually has no idea how to draw down car use to any meaningful degree. It simply dare not weather the storm of protest, because everything that the National Transport Strategy says is needed in respect of the car kilometres reduction target is in exactly the same pile that results in the get-out-of-jail-free "cyclists dismount" signs on cycle paths when the real barriers are not engineering but a) policy, and b) other LAs doing likewise and creating more trip generators and car-centric housing developments.
Posted 1 year ago # -
Just asking…
Are there any A4 notices anywhere in Silverknowes saying the removal of the cycle infrastructure is being considered by CEC??

In 2010, the Scottish Government set a target for 10% of all trips in Scotland to be made by bike by 2020. The target was watered down to 10% of "everyday trips" but remained in place for the full 10 years.
There was no real change in the proportion of trips made by bike over that decade. The Scottish Government faced no meaningful criticism for its abject failure to meet this target. It paid no price - political or otherwise, but garnered many plaudits over those 10 years for its "vision", "ambition" and "bold plans".
The Scottish active travel eco-system is dominated by Scottish Government client organisations (Spokes and PoP being honorable exceptions). The backslapping, positive reports, annual conferences and awards give the impresion of progress - which is then reported in the media.
I think exactly the same will happen with the car reduction target - which I am happy to predict has already been missed.

Lothian Bus passengers will have to wait until early 2024 before the screens show accurate information about how far away a bus actually is.
Councillor Scott Arthur, the city's transport and environment convener, said he was "sorry for the inconvenience".

Lots of deputations for this week’s TEC, including the first appearance of “The Whitehouse Loan Group”.

“
The process of public engagement undertaken in September was bogus because only two equally unpalatable 'redesign options' were presented. These options don't address the closure of Whitehouse Loan but instead propose further unacceptable measures in adjoining streets. Respondents were asked to rank them, not a serious choice as the questionnaire didn't offer the opportunity to say 'neither' or vote for any other solution.
“
Will be a fun meeting.

This is a submission to the Transport & Environment Committee from Corstorphine Primary School Parent Council opposing (for now) the removal of the trial bus gate on Manse Road.
"...some parents report improvements relating to some of these issues in the streets around the school, particularly at the back of the school. For example, Manse Rd and Featherhall area in general are much improved at drop off and pick up time."

Getting Stuff Done - Edinburgh is one of 119 global cities named as "climate action leaders" on the CDP 2023 A List.
Council Leader Cammy Day said: "Scotland’s capital we want to make sure that a cleaner, greener and fairer future is at the heart of our plans. From pioneering our sustainable active travel and public transport networks, to combatting food waste, and making our houses and buildings more energy efficient, alongside flagship projects like our Granton Waterfront net zero redevelopment, I’m inspired by what I see around the city."

I see the Whitehouse Loan Group's "solution" involves a very expensive junction redesign and, who would have guessed it, re-opning that junction to motorised traffic.
Funny how arguments that cycle lanes cause congestion, danger to blind and disabled people, extra air pollution or represent a huge waste of public money evaporate when they facilitate the re-opening roads to motor vehicles.

This looks like a single-interest group. "I want to open up left-turns out of Whitehouse Loan because me me me"
That's also the trouble with the severely overengineered crossing design at Lauder Rd (when a filter would have done) - people now look at that and think, "why can't we have that everywhere?"

The Whitehouse Loan Group is a great band name. I’m thinking cool jazz, if @algo is looking for a side project.
