I'm kind of losing my sense of humor over current developments

    ^^^ This!

We had a taste of a better future during lockdown. It's soul-destroying to see we learned nothing. Today, and yesterday and the day before, the air was so thick with fumes, you could taste it. Last night my family were given a fright by an obnoxious pop-and-crackle kit. Traffic has gone back to exactly as it was before and worse. Streams of cars on our residential street. People won't stop driving and flying everywhere - they think it's not them (are they oblivious? don't they care? do they think someone else will do it...?)

And if what I say upsets people, it's because I'm getting increasingly desperate to protect the liveability of the planet for our children

I'd lost track of why the Forest Road, George IV and Mound southbound lanes were removed. Forest Road was because one council officer thought it'd interfere with the permanent Meadows to George Street TRO? That scheme is now massively behind the schedule at https://meadowstogeorgestreet.info/who-how-when/ and there's been no sign of that TRO?

It's been two years since this article on Infrastructure Hokey-Cokey - which I think is a good description! If there was genuine will then they'd have found a way to keep the lanes in place. Instead we're two years on with nothing to show for it. Distinct lack of leadership from the TEC Convenor.

The bridge is in over Dalry Road

    Major earthworks thereabouts

The Lanark road bollards. All good except the one family holding out at 312 Lanark Road,

But not a lot of other new infra

The underfunding of the Council is clear (the worst per capita funding in Scotland), and the impact on active travel in Edinburgh is often discussed at TEC. Of course, all "key decisions" are taken by Cllrs, and this process can be viewed on the webcast.

If we learned one thing from the covid "Spaces for People" programme, it's that half decent cycle and walking infrastructure can be installed very quickly and cheaply.

A basic, city-wide network of LTNs and arterial cycle routes could be done for less than the cost of tarting up George Street, and then tweaked and upgraded over the following few years. No need for granite slabs, cobbles, or bespoke designs. Look at Copenhagen, their world-renowned cycle lanes are really basic - effectively just a second pavement. New York initially reworked Times Square (one of the most visited places on the planet) with planters, cones and seating.

This is one of the very few problems facing the Council that doesn't need some huge cash injection. Unfortunately, making this happen would involve Cllr Arthur and pals eating their political Weetabix.

I spoke to Transport Scotland (informally) this morning, and said we would welcome any transfer of enforcement powers to the Council.

Is that in relation to pavement parking or something else Musk doesn't want us to know about?

Speeding - the thread is about the 20mph speed limits, and someone asked "Hopefully some chat about more enforcement? People are still speeding and it’s pretty scary at times whether on foot, bike or even car when they tailgate you just for sticking within the law."

    Thanks
Taking speeding enforcement off the police would be an interesting move. It might make it better enforced in some areas but the council hardly cover themselves in glory with their ability to stop dangerous parking.

That would be weird, as it would change speeding from an offence with points to a simple 'pay to speed' model.

I've got (and have always had) a clean licence, and I'm not saying I would rush out to speed if it became a simple case of paying for the privilege, but it's much easier to imagine doing it once it's become a simple transaction like a parking ticket.

Wandsworth are trialling a similar scheme - https://highways-news.com/council-not-police-to-issue-speeding-fines-in-uk-first/

Speed cameras which send out a penalty charge. 50% discount if paid in 14 days. No points. Similar to bus lane enforcement. Tbf seems like the council do collect a decent amount of revenue that way but I'm really not sure I'm happy with what feels a little like decriminalising speeding. I know Police would still be able to issue points but given resourcing issues they'd probably spend more time on other things.

Not down to SA of course, I’m just a bit surprised -

Heriot-Watt University has been ranked 12th in Scotland and 64th in the UK

Watch out for 3 Rifles parading through Colinton Village in my Ward on Wednesday morning - around 300 of them will attend a church service.

It will be a fantastic sight, but there may be some disruption to traffic.

My good buddy who lives Kingsnowe has spotted the car outside 312 has moved and alerted Cllr A to get his double yellows out.

Unclear why it has taken soooo long for this car to move. One great rumour is that it is the home of an ex-councillor but I think just ineptitude rather than conspiracy.

@Dave: That would be weird, as it would change speeding from an offence with points to a simple 'pay to speed' model.

I remember a guy I met on a motorcycle tour abroad many years ago telling me about a time he was pulled over somewhere in eastern Europe - Croatia or Slovenia I think - having just been 'enjoying' himself rather too much on one of their windy roads. With some trepidation he waited while the officer examined his documents, and then wrote out a ticket. He was quite shocked by the number of zeroes on the fine, until he remembered to convert it to sterling, when it came out to be about 50p. He did say that he was almost tempted to ask if he could "have another go"...

Um, you mean their employer says it will pass on the charge?

Or reduce the amount of parking?

Or neither but complainers don’t understand that it’s a charge on the employer(s)?

WHATEVER, CEC MUST set an example if it is to have ANY chance of 30% mileage reduction…

It was great to be able to welcome the Culture & Communities Convener (Cllr Val Walker) to my Ward today.

We met with the people behind
    @TunnelColinton
(Mike & Eddie) in The Spylaw to learn more about how they (and Colinton Amenity Association) are using feedback from residents and planners to help design a mural for Cuddies Lane which is in keeping with the conservation area status.

It's a hugely impressive proposal (Cllr Walker was certainly impressed) that will help tell a little of Colinton's rich history, and highlight the location of the former smiddy.

Cllr Val Walker - that’s the one SA thought would succeed his “interim” status.

General Election Update - The latest polling suggests Labour will take all of the SNP's seats in Edinburgh and the Lothians apart from Edinburgh South West... the SNP are predicted to hold it by just 2.6%.

The right candidate could win it for Labour.

Getting stuff done: Following consultation with residents and interested organisations in and around the west of the city a final framework for development to the south of Edinburgh Airport will be considered by the City of Edinburgh Council’s Planning Committee next Tuesday (19 December).

@SRD - yes. We could so easily get a transport convenor who actively hates cyclists and/or believes the ever increasing nonsense around LTNs, 20-minute neighbourhoods and the like.

This is the most dispiriting thing about Edinburgh local politics at the present. Despite the city voting overwhelmingly for parties that support active and sustainable travel, we have this weird non-coalition reliant on keeping a tiny rump of right-wing petrolhead councillors happy.

What gets me is that progress is just so slow. We know what we need to do - get out there and do it!

The council have even declared an "emergency" - surely in an emergency you can bypass bureacracy and just get on with it?

I think SA sees active travel as secondary to big-ticket public transport projects which will take decades to deliver. And the roll-out of LTNs and bus-gates is incremental and slow.

Just put the bus-gates and modal filters in everything, everywhere, all at once. Do it! Do it tomorrow!
