Sadly think I'll need to withdraw from Loch Ness; the costs involved are going to be too much. If anyone's interested in a spot, please let me know, cos I can do a transfer (and get my money back!).

That’s a shame. Is it accommodation or transport that’s proving difficult? Inverness YH still has dorm beds available, and it’s got a pretty good bike store. I imagine all the bike spaces on trains are now booked - coaches from Glasgow to Inverness take bikes, I believe (& provide a bike sock), but you’d have to train it to/from Glasgow, or ride it.

Fergus, have you looked at the Bus options? many now take bikes and I bet they will be miles cheaper than the train. You may need to treat the bike like you would for a flight, so that may be extra cost. Worth a look though
