    I had a week of holidays left to take at the end of my holiday year so rather than lose them I thought I'd use them so have next week off and nothing particular to do!

    Will be using it to get out with the bike on some leisurely exploring rides with the camera with no particular destinations in mind. Will probably both be around town looking for old bits of buildings and architecture and into east lothian but no fixed agenda.

    If anyone fancies joining me drop a reply or whatever - good excuse for a cake and coffee stop some place. Be prepared for me suddenly slamming on the brakes and reaching for the camera when I see a particuarly interesting brick to photo and add to my collection!

    You have a collection of brick photos? I am hoping to take some time off soon and perhaps do similar stuff. Just a question of getting round to filling out the form..

    You need a form to take pictures of bricks, jings. ;)

    Not at all! Contraptions of all pedal-powered persuasions welcome.

    You have a collection of brick photos?

    On Flickr, yes. Only locally-made low carbon-miles bricks though - even through I've discovered the "Edinburgh" brickworks was actually in Wallyford. What's with that?.

    P.S. I also photograph other things...

    Well the admin I have to do these days is unbelievable..

    "if you dont mind being accompanied by a bent ;) "

    Allow the 'bent to go first and marvel at how drivers try to rip the right hand side of your body off as per normal and then give it 20 feet of space.

    If you don't mind a newbie I'm free on Monday and Tuesday and it would be great to be able to put faces to names.
    I'll get some film for me camera too. Been a while since old Bessa has been used.

    Aye, used to have a Canon 30D with BG and 70-200 2.8 IS. Selt it to pay of a credit card bill but came across a rangefinder an HAD to buy it...
    I currently have 36 or so rolls to develop. Once the scanner broke I stopped developing. Terrible isn't it. Transfer to film and still be dominated by electronics.

    Looking at the weather forecast. Monday and Tuesday will be cold but dry with little wind. Wednesday wet. Thursday bright and breezy (westerly). Friday wet again.

    On Tuesday I was thinking perhaps do the "round the Forth" - out via Kinkcardine, back via Forth bridge.

    I might go up as far as Arnsiston and do a bit of Midlothian. There's some nice quiet backroads and a few fun hills.

    Another day will be a general pootle around town and the cycle paths, looking for interesting buildings and things to photograph.

    Open to suggestions.

    You could always nip up to Balerno recce "the Col", and let us all know how good/bad it is ;-)

    Oh I've done that before! It's "not as bad as I thought it was going to be", if that helps? Redstone is much worse in my most humble of opinions. There's no switchback turns at least.

  13. Hmmm, tomorrow and Thursday I'm 'working from home'. Have a couple of other things I have to do (including actually working) but if I've got rough routes and you're anywhere near Duddingston then I could probably hook up for an hour or two, or the house is available as a coffee and cake stop - bonuses to this include:

    Our house was built in the 30s with (I think) a contemporaneous garage, which has some old local bricks (there are still some manufacturer marks visible on some of them);

    Get to meet some chickens;

    And a cat;

    Er... That's about it.

    Anth - how about incorporating a spin down to the ash lagoons at Musselburgh for a bit of wader and duck spotting?

    Posted 13 years ago #
  15. That, dear boy, is a superb suggestion. You still going Forth-circular tomorrow? Thursday then?

    Yes I think tomorrow will be a long ride, got some pottering in town to do today (get them new trousers for a start) then thursday can be a day of wildlife and industrial remnants spotting.

    So lagoons, Prestongrange, Cockenzie. Also saw some interesting rubble (yes, such things exist) in some excavations just before Cockenzie out on a club run that looks to be right where Prestonlinks was) What else interesting is there to tag on inbetween? Chdot suggests Edmonstone Waggonway but I was up there yesterday and just can't find any traces - been far too obliterated by ploughing and landscaping. The alignment of the Tranent and Cockenzie Waggonway is much more obvious (as it did last 100 years longer than the former).

    Also being a resident of Porty (tho yet to spot Anth) Im defo up for cake + ash lagoons (err...) and am more than tempted by the round the fourth loop, tho I am recovering from the lurgy and am unsure of the wizeness (wizzness?) of such a course of action.

  18. Yay! Thursday it is chaps! We can sort out the details over the next couple of days I guess.

    @ruggtomcat - there's little strenuous in the round the Forth, it's largely flat, following the coast.

    Thursday ride shaping up to be a pedal and photo / spin and snap / crank and click sort of affair.

    Did you find the suitably wide thighed pantaloons? What about those types favoured by fascist military regimes, usually tucked into a jackboot.

    first draft

    21 miles. Starting at Innocent tunnel (those further east can join on where best suits), ending at Big W at Milton Road currently. Taking in a selection of quiet roads and cyclepaths. Plenty wildlife and other things to photo en route.

    "first draft"

    Add in a minor detour and I'll show you a remnant of the Edmonstone Waggonway.

    I assume a stop at Luca's is planned?

    "Starting at Innocent tunnel"

    Or the Engine Shed

    Good shout on Lucas.

    the Engine Shed

    or the "goods warehouse" as I like to call it :)

    I'm sure we can detour to Edmonstone - take the underpass under A1 at Newcraighall should provide a quick way to reach it?

  27. Looks good. Will debate with myself on meeting at the start for coffee or waiting till you pass nearer. Depends on how much actual work I have to do.

    That looks like one of the few non-creepy uses where google latitude could come in handy. You could see the peloton swarming towards you.

    PY is a convenient starting point, or as chdot suggests the Engine Shed for an alternative (other coffee shops are available)
