  1. Just looking to gauge interest as I should be around for this now.

Was pondering a ride either to or from the bike show from/to Edinburgh. Obviously both ways would create a nice imperial century (and more) but it wouldn't leave much time for perusing the show. Preference, from a 'prevailing wind' point of view would be to train (or other options, see below) to Glasgow, and ride back after the show in the early afternoon.

Other transport options, as we might have too many to guarantee numbers on the train! Hire a van/minibus between us (happy to drive) on a one-way hire. Or have one of the be-vanned forumites drive us there. :P

I'm back in Edinburgh for the 8th so definately up for it.
Happy to contribute equal share to rental, fuel, pack horse hire etc and most happy to cycle with some happy folk.

and what route, none of the options (like this, this or this.) look all that good, all the way on the canal particularly doesn't appeal.

Mmm, strikes me that there is not much 'stuff' - apart from on the stands of retailers.

Not the sort of 'bike show' I'm used to.

Have to say it's a collection of shops and organisations that might be better served by having free entry to attract less committed/not quite committed yet people.

Those who do not wish to go into the bike show could still come for the ride and perhaps do a photo survey of Glasgow bike lanes, cake and coffee? I would also have suggested going to the transport museum to see their fine collection of antique bicycles but it's still closed. They also have Hillman Imps too...

If it was free then bike dealers would have to cough up more as SECC would still need paid. Free event might attract too wide an audience with security problems?

"If it was free then bike dealers would have to cough up more as SECC would still need paid."

Yes, I do understand the economic realities - there are more costs than just the 'hall hire'. Exhibition organisers can make a lot of money if they get the sums right and the punters in.

This is obviously not a 'trade show with public days' which most tend to be. I'm not sure what sort of 'enthusiast' this show is aimed at (if it is).

It remains to be seen how much of the casual/non cycling public will go - clearly the organisers and exhibitors don't know as it's the first time!

In spite of the fact that Edinburgh is more of a 'cycling city' than Glasgow, this is probably the best venue. Glasgow had the Sky Ride last year and is the starting point for Pedal for Scotland.

"Free event might attract too wide an audience"

    ???

    "with security problems?"

Perhaps. Most public shows like this charge - and probably a lot more. I just wonder how much 'cyclists' (notoriously mean - allegedly) will think it's 'value for money' and how many more people might go with a more nominal entry fee.

Real cyclists will avoid it!? Maybe.

This will not have much affect on LB as I don't sell real bikes (allegedly).

Like all things new it will have to learn from mistakes but at least it's happening. I'm doing Outdoor Pursuits as well - this is charging
    Adult £10 (£8 if pre-booked online)
    Children 5-16 £1
    Students & Concessions £5

    THE SCOTTISH BIKE SHOW 2011
Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 April
    SECC, GLASGOW
    http://www.thescottishbikeshow.com/

    News Release - Tuesday 5 March  2011

    THE SCOTTISH BIKE SHOW 2011
An all encompassing bike show for all bike riders at The SECC, Glasgow

The Scottish Bike Show 2011 is being staged at the SECC, Glasgow, on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 April and anticipation and excitement for Scotland's first consumer bike show is building.  For the first time ever the country's growing cycling community - road, mountain bike, street trials, bmx and leisure riders and commuters - will have an all encompassing cycle show on their door step.

With hundreds of brands selling bikes, gear and accessories, a central arena hosting jaw dropping bmx and trials stunt displays, have a go bike test sessions and cycling organisations offering expert advice there will be something for everyone; from hardened enthusiasts to families and the curious new comer.

Organiser Rowan Mackie, from Magdala Media, said:   'The Scottish Bike Show is the first cycle show aimed at cyclists of all disciplines and skill levels to be staged in Scotland.  I have been blown away by just how supportive Scotland's cycling community has been in getting behind this new, exciting and interactive event. With all things two wheeled under one roof it is shaping up to be a spectacular showcase for Scottish cycling.'

The Scottish Bike Show will not only showcase cycling brands, bike manufacturers, independent retailers, distributors and magazines, it will also promote Scotland's growing cycle leisure and active tourism industry.  Cycling holiday and activity providers, representatives from mountain bike trail centres and mountain bike coaching and guiding companies and organisers of open mass participation bike races and bike festivals will be also be exhibiting.

The action packed programme of interactive events will include the BSD BMX stunt team who will amaze visitors with the craziest stunts and tricks and The 7stanes Display team who will show off (and sharing) their trials and mountain bike riding skills and techniques.  Tirol Austria will host the indoor forest track, 'an all in one cycling experience allowing visitors to have a go at biking and experience some great trail features in a safe and fun environment'.  There will also be opportunities to test ride brand new bikes on a flat city style track.

Add to this the best gravity fueled action from the past nine years of the multi award winning Fort William Mountain Bike World Cup viewed on their massive 25 m2 screen; competitions and promotions to win bikes and cycling goodies; and a number of talks from leading authors on cycling and the Scottish Bike Show definitely has something for every member of the family!

There will also be expert cycling advice from a number of national and community cycling organisations, including the official cycling partner of the show, Scottish Cycling; Cycling Scotland, Sustrans, Developing Mountain Biking in Scotland and The Bike Station; all eager to promote their joint vision for Scotland to be a nation of cyclists, through leisure and competitive cycling and how the public can help to achieve this.

Rowan Mackie added: 'The stands are filling up fast with high profile brands selling the latest bikes, cycling kit, accessories and innovations; the top selling bike magazines; government funded cycling organisations; and some of Scotland's top activity providers, trail centres and biking event organisers all signing up.  We also have an action packed programme of events including The BSD BMX team and The 7stanes Display team who will be showing off with amazing stunts, tricks and techniques.

'Whether you're a commuter, you ride on trail, track or road, or simply enjoy a bike ride at the weekend with your family and friends, The Scottish Bike Show is simply not to be missed.'

Organisers have partnered with two national charities for The Scottish Bike Show. The Prostate Cancer Charity is the official charity partner and ten percent of ticket sales will be donated to the charity.  Breakthough Breast Cancer, a pioneering charity saving lives and changing futures through research, campaigning and education, will also be involved with the event.

Tickets for The Scottish Bike Show are only £7.50 adults, £5.50 kids and £20 for a family of 4 ticket - 2 adults, 2 kids if you book online - http://www.ticketsoup.com/tickets/the-scottish-bike-show-2011-2011-12186/default.aspx

I'm planning to go on Saturday but it will be with the family as part of a day out on the train to Glasgow. I'll watch out for you kaputnik if you do get there.

I might be tempted to take the train over and bike back. I assume there will be some sort of secure bikeparking? Is there a list of names of those going and what time to meet up, and which routewe'll be taking home? I'll need to peel off at New bridge to head to the FRB.

I'm hoping to get through on the Saturday, but have some other stuff beforehand and afterwards to deal with too, and a meeting on Sunday lunchtime to go to. Was planning to motorbike it through but will probably get the train and hot-tyre it down Buchanan St and along the Clyde path.

AS for route, we were thinking head out Slateford way then Longstone, Heriot Watt campus and then onto Long Dalmahoy to Kirknewton to pick up NCN75 through the West Lothian villages and then find the route into Glasgow about Airdrie way. Hadn't thought about it too much more than that to be honest!

I don't think I'd be up for a ride there & back I'm afraid, no matter how civilised the time, as I have to get in from Fife (Yes I know I chose to live there) Sorry.

Which route were you thinking of coming back on, as CityStreets suggests I head north towards Falkirk and across the Kincardine Bridge.
