How I managed to miss this fine specimen on Shandwick Place is a mystery:

I spy... ...Art Deco by kaputniq, on Flickr

Also, how I've never noticed this above Poundstretcher on South Bridge is also a mystery. Probably because Poundstretcher makes one look the other way!

I'm sure Anth will be able to get a much more professional looking shot than I can with my wee point-and-shoot. Particularly of the interesting sculpture above the windows. There is another further along the facade, but comparing photos I think its identical to the first.

Just for the heck of it, here is a Gugolmap of more or less all the Art Deco or Streamline Moderne places mentioned in this thread for Edinburgh:

Take me to the map, man

@rugg, Yes, plus I couldn't remember all the different places in the thread, and I thought it might be useful.

Anth, I found some more in Portobello, too, including the Scottish Power conference and learning centre.

Oh, can I add the Lothian Buses HQ on Annandale street, there are some deco-esqe lamps dotted around the building. Bit decrepit though.

A few more for you. First two I had deliberately set out to photograph, the third was a stumbleupon "Oh, I've never noticed that before".

    Ravelston Garden

    30 Old Kirk Road

    16(?) Craigleith Crescent

Was frowningly loudly to myself that people with interesting looking houses shouldn't be allowed to hide them behind tall hedges or plant trees very close, where they obstruct photographs!

had noticed these flats on chesser drive a while ago. not sure what vintage that bldg would be, but the windows struck me as being art deco inspired.

Those are of the last few years, but agree about the windows - with small panes wider than they are tall.

Did we already mention St. Ninian's R.C. Primary School in Restalrig?

    Hidden away down the dingy West Register Lane is this;

Looks like at some point there's been a fine illuminated art-deco rear entrance to the Royal British Hotel Bar. Filthy fire escape now.

"WORK is under way to transform the former home of Telford College into more than 200 flats, while a former city hospital is set to be turned into hundreds of student apartments."

I travelled to Glasgow Central the other day, approaching from the south, and spotted rather stylin' Art Deco building on Salkeld St. It looks like it was a factory of some kind.

    IT is listed

140 Salkeld Street and Return Elevation to Mauchline Street, Former Garage Now Strathclyde Police, Glasgow

Built for Leyland Motor Co. (address 5 Mauchline Street),
    there from 1922-1955.
I think from googling that it was a maintenance depot and later housed Glasgow City Police dog unit.

    Ages ago, I wrote:

"And in other news, apparently today the Fairmile Inn was put up for sale. Back in March the Fairmilehead Community Council minuted:

'There was a possibility that the Fairmile Inn may be being sold. The planning permission which was originally in force for flats had expired so any new development would require to be started from the beginning. It would not be for retail use."

Perhaps an Art Deco mtb/TT/roadie base with CCE branding is the way forwards."

This is the latest news from FCC on the Fairmile Inn:

"The existing building would be demolished and replaced with a multi use facility as an outdoor and mountain sports centre. It was hoped to work in conjunction with the Pentland Rangers and the Snow Sports centre and possibly provide workshop facilities.

There would possibly be 3 flats on site for family members and staff. A café was envisaged for the upper floor and there was the possibility of a Rangers Station.

There could be the possibility of 5 to 10 posts for local employment opportunities. A likely date would be 2013 for completion. The present building is not listed."

I took some photos at the time but probably ought to go again. It'd be a shame to see it demolished.

It's within perfect distance for driving across that horrible road junction to the Pentlands car park...

That is interesting. It is Craigdon Mountain Sports who have bought the building (according to the minutes). They are Aberdeen based; this is a bit of a different move on Edinburgh compared with most of the outdoor retailers (e.g. Cotswalds new store on Rose Street).

With the proposed working link to the Pentlands it would be nice if a better physical link could be provided for pedestrians and cyclists. Maybe a new footbridge? Ok, that's probably way to much to ask.

Perhaps a better link using the Swanston route? - there also seem to be some proposals for Swanston mentioned in the minutes.

"Alistair McClung from Swanston Farm introduced himself. He said that there were 6 years left on the lease for Lothianburn Golf Course and he was making submission to the SESPlan review as well as the current consultation on the new Edinburgh Local Plan.
This was in relation to proposed uses of the land for sporting purposes. There were 125 acres in total and the woodland and agricultural uses would remain. The leisure facilities could be such things as adventure sports, mountain bike trails, running and pony trekking.
There could also be associated development along both sides of Biggar Road with a hotel. It was hoped to achieve an area of excellence for Lothianburn."

For if/when Anth resurrects his project, the block at the end of the cul de sac of Logie Green Gardens is wonderful streamline moderne, although contemporary double glazing leaves something to be desired. And it really should be whitewashed...

Gosh, look what was on the 'bay last year!

I found another interesting piece from history, the old Newhouse Hotel – now with its Art Deco features somewhat tempered in Premier Inn homogenity.

Just been reading Hamish Coghill's 'Lost Edinburgh', and found a reference to "the flashy Art Deco entrance to the former New Tivoli". It's another one of those 'how have I never noticed this before?' I've ridden past it so many times!

Streetview – and many more pictures including the insides.

I'm hopeless at architectural styles, I can recognise art deco when its pointed out but could (do) ride past it every day with out paying any attention.

As of about half an hour ago, Liz. :-)

Just for completists' sake, Maisie's visit as far as Lochgelly that chdot posted is in fact the Cinema de Luxe on Bank Street.

@Arellcat, wrong location copied, I wanted to put on the Bed Shed in Gorgie Road. Which is now on...as I have edited the previous post!!

The Bed Shed used to be Poole's Roxy cinema, before they demolished most of it to make flats.

Edit: I seem to have managed to delete the contemporary photo I found in my book, but you can see it elsewhere, here.

@Arellcat it was Durham Pine shop before Bed Shed by the looks of it. Lovely building. Looking at an earlier link of Anth's I remember going to the cinema on Princes Street with my gran which showed Pathe newfilms and cartoons on a Saturday morning. I also remember what was The Grand in St Stephens Street, one when it was Tiffany's and following that Cinderella's Rockefellas, and went to see the Q-Tips there and also Toots and the Maytals amongst others!

  30. Picking this up again - I've started putting together some sample pages for a couple of likely publishers. If I can get one of them interested then I can make the time to get the rest y'see...
