This previous post by Arellcat mentioned the Fairmilehead Inn.

Signs have now gone up (not sure how long they've been there) mentioning the new Craigdon Mountain sports facility.

Found this showing the architects' plan for the new building.

    http://www.edinburgharchitecture.co.uk/craigdon_mountain_sports.htm

    And also...

    http://www.urbanrealm.com/news/3792/Craigdon_Mountain_Sports_Facility_approved.html

...which would suggest that work is already behind schedule.

Interesting that Urban Realm describes it as 1950s, not 1930s. I'm still surprised that it never warranted historic building protection, but possibly because it was already fairly well modified.

"Art deco cinemas saved from demolition"

    Down south though

  4. Funnily enough I've resurrected this project recently and have added pictures of the 'supercinema' on Great Junction Street; the dental college on Chambers Street; Jenner's Depository; and this morning Learmonths Court and Terrace.

Getting there with the help of the slightly more regular sun.

Not sure if you've already had this suggested, but there's the building which the Poundstretcher is in on South Bridge.

  6. Got that one :)

Oh, and a Scotmid across the road from Jenner's Depository.

Too late for the Fairmile Inn, though.

That was nearly two weeks ago; it's pretty much flattened now.

Whilst searching for something unconnected this thread appeared in the results. I thought I'd give it a little bump to say LRT have finished the refurbishment of the Longstone depot and it's looking nice and fresh.

  9. Got pics of that a couple of months ago. At the stage now of approaching a few publishers... ;)

Historic Scotland invests £1.9 million to support reuse and renovation of buildings

    ...

six across Scotland that will share almost £1.9 million of funding announced today (20 March 2014) by Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs.

    ...

The art deco Castlebrae Business Centre in Edinburgh is to receive £500,000 towards a major refurbishment of the 1930s school building to limit the ongoing decay of the historic exterior fabric. The building’s owners also intend to carry out considerable internal alterations to make the building more suitable for business use and encourage local business start-ups. These internal alternations will also conserve the existing historic interior features.

  13. Figured I should do something with all of the pics, so starting out with an Art Deco Edinburgh Facebook page - I've a solid idea for an app (which I can then adapt for some other projects), but I need to acquire those particular skillz before I can do anything.

    September date?

Doors Open Art Deco Cycle Ride - would be even better if it could encourage a dress/bike code appropriate to the building s being visited?

Nice exemplar.must be the nicest bingo hall in edinburgh?

  16. I think so gembo - must have been spectacular (in a tacky but wild way) with the glass, colour-changing pillar. And all in sleepy little Porty.

Tulyar, now that is a fabulous idea.

the majestic garage is least deco but you can see the style. Obvioulsy the stronger deco buildings are great examples but the ones with just a touch of deco are not as good as the ones in Bo'ness where there are loads of deco buildings

One house the EEN didn't mention was Balnagarrow, in Cramond village. Cycled past it the weekend before last. Hard to see much from the road but some nice details on Wowhaus.

    "offers over £225,000"

Well now that the cat's out of the bag, I would not be surprised if it easily topped £300,000.

The factoring costs appear to be £90 a month. Which by my rough working is the equivalent of £35K extra on a 3% mortgage.

so even if it only goes for £30K over asking price then that's pretty much the same as the average house price.

    @chdot: This was in 2019: https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/regions/auditorium-demolished-iconic-leith-cinema-embarks-new-lease-life-548337

TBH while some locals may have held fond memories of the auditorium, from the mid-demolition photo it looks pretty much like nothing much more than a big shed. At least the obviously art deco frontage is to be retained.

Some locals maybe began their lives in the auditorium?
