Just seen that Meadowbank will see the Scottish Track Cycling Championships this weekend. The full schedule and more details are here.

Sunday looks like a busy schedule. Might head on down take some photos etc. Any other takers?

  2. I'd probably be game for that - get down for 11ish, looks like racing finished about 2.15pm or so?

Looks good! Might take my son, we just live round the corner.

  4. I'll ride down, only about 5-10 minutes from the front door. Wonder how good a view you get of everythnig - might take the big lens to get properly close to the action...

Then a cake / sticky bun? Discuss plans for world domination?

Not sure of the cake options of the immediate vicinity...

I'm not going to vote for any candidate for the council who thinks that Portobello is in the immediate vicinity of Meadowbank.

Broughton St is closer than Portobello. Bottom of Constitution St, too...

  9. Yes, but Portobello is also closer to my house... AND it's all downhill from the velodrome. ;)

Not much on a Sunday, methinks. There's a nice patisserie at the top of Easter Road but that's a bit far away. Maybe something on Marionville Road but I'm not sure, just pubs I think. There is a cafe at Holyrood Abbey Church hall that is open on Friday and Saturday, but not Sunday for obvious reasons. Directly opposite the stadium on London Road is a Mickey D drive-thru for the truly desperate! Otherwise pop into Sainsbury's for cakes and do a picnic...?

It would be a quick rumble down Piersfield to get to Portobello prom?

Alas, I won't be doing cakes as I have another engagement in town at 2.30 on Sunday. Will try to get to the racing though earlier. Might bring my own cakes for myself and mini me to eat al fresco.

  14. Even quicker through Piershill!

I will probably be in the crowriver camp as well, will see...

Saturday racing should go on till about 16.30 at least - the sprints are too unpredictable so all you are seeing are the start times.

If you want photos, the usual place to take them is from ground level at bend 4 - the west end of the velodrome. This should be OK - just ask the guys who do this regularly.

You used to be able to take photos from the grandstand, and this was great for bunch races like the De'il take the hindmost, but the stupid council reckoned that this was a fire hazard, so it may be open, it may be not. Not the fault of those who put a huge effort into organising this.

And, a moment in history? Anyone to put money that this will be the last big track cycle event in Edinburgh?

    And it looks like rain.

Heavy rain showers forecast for Saturday, but Sunday supposedly better.

An area of heavy and perhaps thundery rain is expected to develop over northeast England by Saturday afternoon. It will then spread north into southeast Scotland during Saturday afternoon and evening. The rain should die out across northeast England on Saturday night but will persist across Scotland into Sunday morning and perhaps longer.

    "Sorted then?"

Yeah, for spectators - watching an empty track.

That's why there was 'meant' to be a roof...

Rain will become persistent and often heavy across Southeast Scotland during the afternoon, spreading north into the rest of the East this evening and tonight. The rain will last through much of Sunday. Accumulations of 25 to 35mm are expected widely, with 60mm locally and a small risk of localised totals of 75 to 100mm in the Southeast.

An updated FLOOD ALERT has been issued for Edinburgh and Lothians.  A spell of heavy and possibly thundery rain is expected across much of the area through Saturday and into Sunday. The rain is expected to start during the morning and give possible totals of between 25 and 35mm with higher totals expected over more eastern areas such as East Lothian.
