Spot the CCErs
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

200km in those winds... congrats to all!
Riffian how did you get on?
That was some ride! There were some tough times but I dragged myself round.
Easy run in a group to North Berwick and promptly dropped by the group as we left North Berwick! Long leg to Innerleithen- climb and then descent into Innerliethen were hellish with the wind. With about 80km done by then I seriously questioned whether I was going to make it.
Sustenance and fluid in Innerleithen (and a tail wind) meant I felt a lot better heading towards Duns. Few stiff climbs but a great descent into Lauder. Stopped to get details of rider who was in a collision with a car. Ambulance had just arrived. Sobering. Subsequently heard injuries not too serious.
P*nct*red at 140km. Long hard slog out of Duns all the way over the moors. Very glad to get to the top of Redstone Rigg. Final miles between Gifford and Tranent seemed to take forever as wrists, knees and arse were complaining mightly. One last p*nct*re in Tranent at c195km and I was back into Musselburgh at 1925.
My first 200km - a very long day in the saddle that I'll never forget and maybe even repeat!? Any recommendations for new tyres!?
marathon supreme, fat, comfy, fast and tough.
Well done Riffian. Doing your first 100+ is always hard and that was a really tough day. Hope you enjoyed it. Did you get back in time for soup?
I have been using michelin kyrlions and conti gp3000s on this type of run. Reasonable p*** resistance but quick and grippy.
My personal experience of cycling on the roads is that you don't need a cyclepath specification tyre like a Marathon or a Top Contact and I wouldn't want to haul anything like the weight of a Marathon around a long-distance course at reasonable speed. Particularly as Audax / Sportive organisers seem to revel in throwing in climbs. I found Continental GP4000 to be light, VERY fast rolling and very tough. God a good few thousand miles out of them (and a 200k and 300k Audax with no flats) and they also took me along towpaths, through glass, across beaches and even some of chdot's "shortcuts" around the back of Gogar.
@kaputnik, the GP looks like a good tyre, competitively priced too. Seems much more of a road race tyre than I might use: 120psi, 25mm max width, range of bright colours. Did you buy the lemon yellow version, perchance? :-)
Unless I'm constrained by clearances (see single speed musings passim) I prefer a wider tyre for longer rides, in the 28mm to 35mm range. Just comfier, basically. I've looked at Vittoria Randonneur but I'm still loyal to the cult of Schwalbe Marathon (Plus or not, 32/35mm). At a pinch, Conti Gatorskins (28mm) or Top Contact (32mm) would do fine too. All heavier/slower than road race tyres, mind. Schwalbe's Durano range looks interesting too: anyone tried them?
No not yellow alas, I have the 4000s, which at the time only came in "chilli black". They are folding and a bit pricier than regular GPs. The Bike Chain did a good deal on them in their sale at the time.
I've had good service out of Gatorskins too (25s and 28s) however the sidewalls are pretty thing and aren't up to a lot of non-tarmacced cyclepath riding in my opinion (I managed to shred one pretty good on the Pencaitland railway path last year when it was only a few weeks old).
Top Contact is priced beyond the Marathon Plus normally, Conti say it's aimed at serious off-the-beaten track long distance trekking cycling. I've put the cheaper Touring Plus on my tourer (32s) as it's only going to face tarmacced roads and the odd bit gravelly cycle path in the near future. If I was going into the Styx proper I might upgrade.
Marathon plus failed on me on day 1 of my tour. Gatorskin on the front wheel survived whole tour with no flats (770 mile, 45kg loaded bike weight). Replacement regular marathon held up good too.
Thanks for the advice- think I'm looking at the Conti GP4000 or the Schwalbe Durano.
I have Gatorskins in 28mm on my commuter which I'm pretty satisfied with, but fancy something a bit nicer.
Did you get back in time for soup?
I got back for soup (and sushi!). Martin said there were four more due after me. I see from, ahem, another forum that they arrived out of time so at least two hours after me.
"ahem, another forum"
Other forums are available.
Just not sure if any are as entertaining/educational/well behaved/supportive etc.
I once looked at mumsnet and was shocked!!
Wow, quite an interesting story over on the 'other' forum about this ride.
Yes - this is interesting, especially the apparent lack of action from the police.
[ link is here: http://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=44387.30 - not that I would encourage anyone to two-time this forum :o ]
the apparent lack of action from the police
L&B have more pressing priorities. Like policing the Roseburn path.
"
Organiser's report:
23 people started as the weather forecast had caused an outbreak of staying in bed.

!!
"
Apparently the first policeman on the scene was the drivers son! No witness statements were taken and no 'on the scene' investigation.
"
Bit serious, if true.
And it doesn't help that the injured cyclist has concussion and is in no fit state to pursue his case. A job for the CTC I think.
The Police never cease to disgust me, I really hope this gets persued.
