I've just returned to cycling after a break of five years. Perhaps the story is too common amongst the uncommitted; have a child, get off the bike, don't get back on.

I got the Brompton out of storage last year, but only rode it once. I lived very close to my old workplace but a new job has got me back on the bike for the short commute, these last couple of weeks.

The barriers were mostly internal. I'd lost confidence. Being a parent changes one's outlook. I used to be an assertive, vehicular-style rider in London. Here, I felt afraid to cycle across the Bridges. Building up confidence over short stretches helped, and now I am sailing about, though still rather slowly. Being a recent pedestrian and past buggy pusher I feel I am noticing a lot.

The lousy state of bike provision and maintenance on the roads here is really starting to get my goat.

@ultrazool Cycling across bridges _is_ scary! Good for you though. Let us know how it goes.

More generally - yesterday I saw an acquaintance who early in the spring had just got a bike shaped object (BSO), from someone on gumtree. She wanted to cycle to work, but wasn't sure about it and had decided to get a cheap bike to try it out, but realized bike was pretty useless. Asked me what i thought she should get - I said, a folder with hubgears, dynamo lights etc.

Yesterday, the first thing she said to me was 'you must come see my brompton' :)

I doubt she remembered that I'd said that, but very pleased that it may have stuck in her subconscious.

Hi all, I'm not new to cycling, but this seems to be the place that people introduce themselves.

I've been using this forum for a while to get news of all the path changes and events in Edinburgh, so I thought I may as well join up. It's been a really good resource, filled with localised knowledge that probably can't be found elsewhere.

About me: most of my riding is my commute, city centre to Heriot-Watt, which for years I did on a cheapy Halfords' hybrid, but a few months back was upgraded to a Revolution Cross, which has greatly increased the enjoyment of cycling. I just wonder how much fun could be had if I were to drop a few grand on a bike!

Hi everyone, just realised I've never actually introduced myself, I've just come on and started posting like I own the place! Sorry for my arrogance, I'll take a leaf out of ggovan's book.

My name is Dunny (Ross). This is my story.

I'm the world's unluckiest person when it comes to bikes. Specifically having them stolen. I've been cycling for around 3 years, a combination of wanting to get un-fat and to save on transport costs. Lothian buses kept putting ticket prices up, and I was all bitter about it. So I got a Spesh Hardrock from a friend.

Had it for about 6 months, before the local pond life of Stenhouse claimed it as their own. I bet most of you have had that feeling of going to get your bike in the morning only to find a broken lock and a lonely space where it used to be. Anyway, after my bottom lip stopped quivering and my heart was mended, I got another, about a year later.

This one was nicked from my mothers house. I had propped it up against her shed in the back garden, went to retrieve the key, and while doing so some suits (shellsuits) ran in and claimed it. I could only watch knowing that I hadn't done enough to get rid of the spare tire to keep up with them, especially in their attire.

It was a bright blue Specialised P. Street 2. Not the dirt jumpers, kind of a cross between one of those and a MTB. To this day I still see the scumbags cycling around the area with bright blue grips on other bikes. So annoying...I did give chase one night when I saw this brazen show, but nope, still too chubby.

I got it replaced on the home insurance, and that's what I ride today. Look out for me around Stenhouse mostly, Cyan bike and same colour sixsixone lid.

Just last night I caught someone in my garden having a good old check to see if my shed lock was secure. Very nice of them, but unfortunately they didn't stick around to tell me how secure it was.

So yep, that's me, commuter by day, MTBer by weekend, crime fighter by night. But I'm glad the bus fares went up, I love cycling and if a bus was free now, I'd still go by bike!.

You can’t walk around this gorgeous city and not be a little worried about taking from two legs to two wheels. Edinburgh is a town full of cobble-stones, hills, angry taxi drivers (and lovely ones), risk-taking pedestrians, buses, tram-works, rain, hail, sleet, and snow. But I was determined to persevere.

Thought I'd revive this thread as there must be a few 'new' cyclists who have joined CCE in the last couple of years.

I started cycling in July 2014 but after 3500 miles don’t feel quite so new anymore. I started cycling after moving by the NCR 75 out of town, and noticing many bikes going past. Initially I thought a bike would be useful for going to the train station but now normally cycle in to town, 11 miles to Leith, or often 9 miles to work in the other direction.

If all goes to plan will have my first proper looking bike in a few days when pick up a Dawes Galaxy from the bike station, my too small hybrid with a harsh ride not being so good on longer journeys over 45 minutes even with the seat at highest and an added riser and springy saddle.

I've always owned bikes but never felt confident on the roads. Started commuting properly in June, love it now. Am vaguely worried about a cold winter and what gear I'm going to need but still going to power through. I live in Stenhouse so it's a vaguely uneventful cycle into town apart from the constantly blocked cycle lanes and angry drivers...

Winter studded tyres are the most useful thing in my view.

+1 for the studded tyres - Planet X and Rose Bikes are the two online retailers who regularly offer winter studs at discounted prices in a variety of styles/wheel sizes.

    Just reviving this.

Not sure if there are any new/recent/returning cyclers joined CCE recently.
