Amber alert for Lothian & Borders

    Issued at - 12 Sep 2011, 05:16
    Valid from - 12 Sep 2011, 06:00
    Valid to - 12 Sep 2011, 23:59

The remains of Hurricane Katia will move eastwards across northern Scotland during Monday, bringing a spell of very windy weather to the UK and also heavy rain to western Scotland. The strongest winds are expected to affect parts of Northern Ireland during the morning, before moving east across central and southern Scotland and into northeast England by evening. However, areas further south will not be immune, with the potential for strong gusts, particularly to the east of high ground. Northern Scotland is now less at risk of strong winds then previously envisaged.

The public should be prepared for the risk of disruption to transport and of the possibility of damage to trees and structures.

Love this weather. We always get tail-end of hurricanes like this at home (see last bit of land before Ireland on the storm path here), as they usually spin more north and west, rather than east. Means nice warm, sunny (and windy and rainy) weather for September.

    Into the breach, my friends.

I'm armed with Goretex and a folding bike today, in case a bus is more windproof than me. Sounds like a good argument for a velomobile, actually.

Just heard that today's Tour of Britain stage has been cancelled due to the winds.

I was just in shorts, t-shirt, mitts and shades this morning. Was much too hot. It's a warm, sticky wind.

Took the car today, was crap, but wasn't keen on the cross winds with the tot seat... and slept in :)

  8. Had to pedal to get down Johnstone Terrace this morning. And it's only got windier since then. I'm on the 7th floor of our building with a nice big flat glass surface angled, it would appear, exactly perpendicular to today's wind. It's noisy.

Still, should fly home. If the swirling and crosswinds don't fire me under the nearest available bus.

I came in by bus - the bikes are safely wrapped up in the garage and I seriously need a rest after yesterday.

Had a nice easy ride on the way in and plan to run home which should be interesting but will be good training for the Coast to Coast.

It took me about three minutes to coast down Johnstone Terrace on the way in. Thankfully there was no corresponding wind trying to blow me back down Ramsay Lane on the way up.
A colleague is suggesting popping out for some laps of the hill over lunchtime. Considering it.

Unpleasantly hot coming in although some quite heavy rain. I suspect it will be a slog back to the airport for me and then some fun sitting in traffic, although it means I get to listen to PM and then the news on R4.

  13. I did at least this morning leave the waterproof in the bag, riding in in just a t-shirt and short troos and so wasn't overheating too much.

Yes... semi low racer ideal for this;-)
Plus you'll get underneath fallen trees if you're lucky.
Maybe worth wearing a h****t today as lots of debris flying off roofs (or is that comment not allowed?)

I'm not venturing out on two wheels today. It's the gale force gusts, sideswiping you into the path of HGVs/buses/BMWs that I'm not keen on!

Also strong wind's a beggar for blowing one's hat off and carrying over the nearest fence/wall...

Whatever direction the wind's supposed to be blowing in it's inevitably right in your face just at the crest of the road up the hill and right in your face just at the start of the wee incline up to the castle-view gap before the downslope. It's blowing downwards besides the crags so heading up the Scotsman-Pollock track might get a bit tedious.

I really need to move to the other side of the city, the wind always gets up in the afternoon.

Can confirm it's really quite breezy on the west coast. Here's hoping for a tailwind on the way home...

Fife was fun until it started raining.

    Abandoned scenic circuit.

    Back on train (as planned).

We weren't alone - woman heading for JoG and found Tay Bridge shut to cyclists -

Survived a thrilling journey, including getting a recumbent on a bus replacement service by placing it vertically between the seats. Who needs folders?

Cycled to the train st, and got soaked, as my waterproofs were in my bag and I was at risk of missing the train. Luckily I had spare clothes inmy locker at work. Then on the way home hopped up a kerb on the way home, through the Ind Est behind our estate and pinch punctured my rear tyre.... It was thrillng riding home from station with a tail wind though ;D

Darkerside Welcome to forum (if you haven't been welcomed before)- you may be our furthest west poster...? Apart from US ones.

Having pedals at front end of bike is one advantage of a non standard bike when it comes to standing it on back wheel...

A bit dull out there and I got a flat on a Kojak yesterday so I might use the old Brompton M6R with Marathons and Schmidt today.
