The proprietor is obviously very busy getting it painted, decorated and set up but I'm sure he'll tell us more when he gets a moment!

Well he was wondering on Saturday how long it would take people to notice - but I didn't realise he was planning such an obvious sign quite so early!

I think the idea is more 'by appointment' than 'open all hours'.

woo-hoo! Now we know why he's been so quiet :)

If I may quote Laidback, who appeared form the bowels of the shop to tell me all about - "it's more of a showroom".

I suggested that if it rains he can at least let people try the trikes out on the shop floor in a tiny circular course.

The newly sanded and sealed floors look lovely. I think he could give Ronde a run for their money if gets in a good espresso machine.

Is there going to be a grand opening? or at least a coffee morning? I'll bake muffins for it!

Yes I would be happy to do that - it is quite slow but straightforward. Will also froth up milk. I do hope this shop is in the same Marchmont Bruntsfield quarter as every other bikeshop in Edinburgh. When i did Higher Geography (100 years ago) there was a dude Christhaller {I cannot remember correct spelling]. He had a theory about utilities and their location [involved triangles]. Other theories were also available e.g. Central Business District (or somesuch). None of these theories can possibly explain how so many bike shops can be found in the one area.

Obviously, our very good friends The Bike Chain and Mr Freewheelin exist outwith the quartier. Very bad looking accident involving motorbike outside Mr Freewheelin tonite about 5pm

    Yes.

"as every other bikeshop in Edinburgh."

    Don't forget the Stockbridge/Broughton triangle.

I think this is the explanation.

In a nutshell - "Even when multiple firms in the same sector (competitors) cluster, there may be advantages because that cluster attracts more suppliers and customers than a single firm could alone".

When they're complementary competitors - selling similar things rather than the same thing - the effect is enhanced because the competition is less price focused.

Looks like a place worth wandering to when I'm up that way on Friday.

This is great news - we are dead chuffed for you!

That's not how the industry works with regards to suppliers. We still operate under stupid restrictive 'territories' and if you are close too/too close to another shop then you can find an epic battle on your hands to get accounts.
You would not believe the nonsense. It's like a creche sometimes.

"You would not believe the nonsense."

    I would - been there...

It'll be interesting to see how Evans' suppliers handle the 'geographical conflicts'.

Ah see that's where the Evans Own/Pwn Brands come into play.

They won't have Spesh. Or Trek. Apparently...

    We will see.

    Quite

The other key brand that will be of interest to at least one nearby shop is Brompton.

Thanks for interest in LB showroom.

Will be open on Saturday from 10 till 2. Mainly by appoint as not accessory shop...

Official opening wil be marked somehow - thanks for suggestions. I do fancy having an opening where we meet up open and then close the shop and go for a bike ride!

"and go for a bike ride!"

It'll have to stay south of Princes Street.

I promised not to say anything about this until it 'broke' naturally, after I stopped to pap the sign the other night.

    Very excited, of course.

    Progress Update.

Today the showroom has acquired a Helios, the Alize super-trike and a further Raptobike (I'm fairly learning these recumbent names. I'll soon know my Nazcas from my Challenges).

    And some leaflets and shelves.

And a web address transfer on the window.

  27. Marchmont Crescent, near the sharp corner where it (doesn't) meet Warrender Park Road and (does) meet Roseneath Place.

Took a very brief spin by last night on the way home from work. Looking good!
