Slip from the Russle Road thread (so not to ping pong back and forth on oe thread.

Water of Leith path closed at Baird Drive south bound. Diversion forces the ped/cyclist along Barid Drive, west and south on Balgreen Road.

Not the most ideal route now that the south bound carrageway of Balgreen road has bee closed, with traffic lights and single line of traffic going north and south of the North bound carrageway. Sorry no photos.

Cycled through this maze this morning 09.55 on the way to Saughton Skatepark. Wouldn't like to do it as part of the regular commute. The skatepark is due some remedial works and hopefully these will begin Monday 3 October 2011. Separate post required on the skatepark work methinks..

"Wouldn't like to do it as part of the regular commute."

I know we (OK me) are smugly self-important about cycling, but -

This is precisely the time - general disruption (+ curiously fine weather) when the Council should be going out of its way to ENCOURAGE people to cycle.

    Instead -

Balgreen, Haymarket, Russell Road, The Mound, Princes Street, York Place, Dublin Street...

I would like to think that CEC is 'too scared' to upset the motorists more, but I just think they don't think.

    Car or tram.

Pedestrians and cyclists don't get a look in.

Don't seem too bothered about making sure that Lothian Buses does well either.

Anyone know what they are doing at Balgreen Road. Is it tram related?

The ped tunnel has been closed so they've had to create a pedestrian route on the road.

Therefore it is the pedestrians' fault for the temp. traffic lights.

I do go this way quite often although it tends to be early (7.30am) so not had too much of a problem so far.

    " Is it tram related?"

    Oh yes.

Nothing happens for two years and then...

Yes, I imagine that a 10m wide strip along the north side of the rail line is being built up to provide a raised platform for the tram. This means all bridges, roads and crossings along that route will be affected.

    Cheers Chdot, makes sense now.

chdot - far be it from me to defend the council, however - suggesting to people they should take to their bikes [something we all want] is however something that might incense the EEN brigade. you are ploughing up our roads and your suggestion is we take to the bike? Can we vote for someone else please?

In a rational world there would be a way for this to happen but in an EEN World I can't see it.

"In a rational world there would be a way for this to happen but in an EEN World I can't see it."

    I agree (especially after a conversation I had today - don't ask).

BUT this is a Council that signed up to the Brussels Charter -

    "
The key passage that Edinburgh has agreed to says: “To set a target of at least 15% for the share of cycling in the modal split of trips for the year 2020 and of further growth if this target already is achieved.”

It's not even saying 'we're trying to get there but it might be difficult'.

    The traffic lights have gone.

Surely they haven't finished a bit of tram works? Much more likely that nothing was done during the lane closure and the cones will be back some time soon...

I have a feeling rereading this thread that the work may have been on the ped tunnel and not directly relates to any potential extension to the bridge north of its current limits.
