    A better way to work
    October 2011

    Hello and Welcome...
...to the October edition of the A better way to work newsletter. In this month's edition we've got a great free eco-driving offer for you, information on cycle training, bike marking, and well as details of the weekly second hand bike sales held at the Bike Station.

    Save Fuel & Cash
With the ever rising cost of fuel, we're all looking to save some money on our petrol or diesel bills. So, to help you out, A better way to work is able to offer a limited number of free eco-driving lessons, in conjunction with the Energy Saving Trust. These lesssons normally cost £40 a session.

Much like a driving lesson, you'll go out with an approved driving instructor for 50 minutes, who will assess your driving and offer tips and advice on how to drive smoother and more efficiently, saving you fuel and money every time you get in your car. In fact, the Energy Saving Trust estimate that after training you could save as much as two months’ worth of fuel.

    The approved driving instructor will:

be accredited by the Energy Saving Trust to provide training
    provide the car and insurance
ensure that the training is enjoyable and will focus on giving you the techniques to enable you to drive more efficiently.
To find out more, e-mail Hannah at hannah@thebikestation.org.uk . Places are limited, so will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis.

Refresh Your Cycle Skills for Free
Now is the perfect time to either brush up your cycling skills or learn how to cycle, before the clocks go back at the end of the month.

And the good news is that as your workplace is part of A better way to work, the cycle tuition will come completely free of charge to you. And if you don't have a bike then don't worry, as we can also give you a loan of a bike, again, free of charge, so nothing is stopping you!

Cycle tuition from A better way to work is completely geared around you:

    * Lessons are provided on a one-to-one basis
    * You can have as many lessons as you need to feel a confident and safe cyclist
    * The cycle trainer can travel to meet you wherever you want (as long as it is within Edinburgh) and hold the lesson at a convenient location to you.
    * Tuition will take place at a convenient time to you.

If you book tuition before the end of October you will also receive a free book detailing everything you need to know about cycle technique and skills.

If you are interested in receiving cycle tuition please e-mail better@thebikestation.org.uk or call 0131 668 1996.

    Get Your Bike Security Marked
Lothian & Borders Police are in central Edinburgh this week security marking bikes. Get your bike registered and UV marked for £5; or registered, UV marked and electronically tagged for £16. A limited number of bikes will be registered and UV marked for free, so be sure to arrive early!

The bike marking will take place between 11am and 1pm on the following days:

Thursday 13th October - West End Police Station

Friday 14th October - Gayfield Police Station

    Need A Bike?
Did you know that as well as hosting the A better way to work project, the Bike Station also runs weekly second hand bike sales? On a Friday between 10am and 4pm, you can pick up a cheap refurbished kids bike, from as little as £20. On Saturdays, from 10:30am you can buy second hand adults bikes, with the average price of a bike being around £75. All bikes have been serviced and refurbished by fully qualified mechanics, and come with a three month guarantee, meaning if anything goes wrong with them (apart from a puncture) your bike will either be repaired or replaced, making it a reliable way to purchase a second hand bike.

The Bike Station can be found at 250 Causewayside, Newington, EH9 1UU.

For more information see the Bike Station website, here.

    And Finally...
......remember that the clocks go back on 30th October. With the dark nights drawing in, now is a good time to invest in a set of front and rear lights for your bike. Not only are they imperative in keeping you safe and visible to other road users - but did you know it is also illegal to cycle without lights? If caught you can be fined £30 per missing light - making it a £60 total if you are missing both the front and rear lights. You can pick up a set of lights quite cheaply from any bike shop - put them on your shopping list today!
