  1. Ladies and gents, next Friday will see the second birthday of CCE - what say ye to a coffee-type beverage and cake-type nibbles in the morn of the 28th?

And given the apparently impending snowness, perhaps we should all arrive en velos d'hiver.

    AKA http://tinyurl.com/PY-Fri

"Normally from 7.30 to 8.30 for most folk."

Some people hang on past nine.

Some people will be outside so they don't have to de-layer -

    Or to admire other bikes...

As usual I will say I will try and probably not make it given the Army level of preparation the family now takes for morning school (I miss the days of afternoon nursery when I could leave before anyone else woke up)
What time will people be there until I may not be able to make it until 8 or even 9

I normally leave at about 8.30 and I'd say most folk are gone by then but it does vary. Not very helpful I know!

    Posted 12 years ago #
  13. Yep, I'm about 8.30 at the latest - this job is a little more demanding about getting in at 9 than my old place (after all of our redundancies were announced - occasionally wandered in at 9.30 and later after that).

I'll most likely be along around 9ish, if anyone is left (I have to go by PY anyway). Will try to get there earlier if possible, but that is still not likely to be before 8.30.

...and I was sad enough to scan that.

Hope I'll be there if I can sneak out without waking up any of the children.

May have to go a slightly circuitous route so I can have a mile 2k coffee

"...and I was sad enough to scan that"

But bold enough to admit it!

I'm sure the existence of QR codes divides people.

'what's the point', 'must be missing something' - and total indifference.

    Read this yesterday.

    http://www.bikebiz.com/news/read/glyph-hanger-should-the-bike-industry-put-so-much-faith-in-qr-codes/012096

Seems to veer between 'what's the point' and 'useful marketing idea, if thought through properly'.

Also suggests that 'most people' expect a reward - discount voucher etc.

I'm sure people who have noticed the QR codes that have recently appeared on Edinburgh's bus stops don't expect a discount!

Of course it is not possible to scan them if you are viewing the page from your mobile. Unless you can get the scanner to read from a webpage somehow.

We only use them as a call to action that actually gives folk something in return. Best we've found is as a direct download link for our app which people can drive by scan at events. (sorry about the ad, CH, illustrating a point and the foody folk here will quite like the apps)

I was at the Glasgow Science centre and thought to myself - they limit the info they put on the walls about the different exhibits - why not also give a QR code to more info online so parents can wander about reading more about the bits they were interested in while the kids run into exhibits and break themselves

Can be done 'easily' on an iPhone. (Easily as in - takes a bit of time and probably not worth the effort).

Take a screenshot (apparently not possibly on some other phones) then use QR Reader (available on other platforms) which can read from 'photos'.

Another popular mobile OS allows you to either save the image from the page then re-open it in a QR-reading utility to decode it, or (if that seems long-winded) long-press the image, choose "share via..." then invoke the QR-decoding tool.

Press and save is also an option on iPhones - I was thinking of when a QR code was part of an image/advert rather than a separate item (OK less common!).

    "then re-open it in a QR-reading utility"

Some apps don't have this option.

    Hmm.
    Aha.
Google Goggles (launched from long-press then share) just managed to find the codes concealed within Stepdoh's advert, though it had an irritating little 'scanning' animation where a blue line sweeps over the image, for which it loses points.

Jeez, they are probably SR codes in many of those cases, think a lot of it is down to software though.

Since the 7.5 upgrade Windows Phone has it built in to search now takes about half a second to identify and read the codes even if the camera is moving slightly.

Useless since we don't have a winpho version of the app, but hey ho!

    Don't know about Windows...

QR reading software has definately improved over past year.

Not only can it handle movement, some apps manage quickly even when camera not pointed 'full square'.

Needs a 'reasonable' camera - which is probably most 'phones less than two years old.
